As a Nigerian-immigrant in North America, I have come to one conclusion: Social Justice, wokeness and progressivism can ONLY exist in a developed, liberal and first-world nation/region where there are very few existential threats and where the purposeless masses in urban areas have to create some form of ideology to fill the void in their lives. That is why it makes no sense and destroys that society. That is also why non-western countries and immigrants mostly tend to hate social justice and wokeness more than the native citizens.
Since you are Nigerian, you should know better than to speak such foolishness. Especially given how wicked and corrupt your leaders are and how much suffering is going on outside of the major cities 😑. Social justice is needed in most countries to prevent needless suffering at the hands of those without conscience...yet not to the extreme levels at which we see it playing out in America with the Alphabet Squad.

I admire the girl for attempting to think critically. Being wrong is okay, and realizing/admitting that you need to justify your thinking is the first step towards finding truth.
I have actually pondered this question for quite some time now, and I am fairly smart. My thoughts: #1. The war on drugs is completely and utterly racist! #2. Everyone thinks things that they dare not say in public, my self included. #3. Although the institute of slavery was racist, by and large now a days, African Americans have it pretty good here. #4. I tend not to dwell too much on things that are out of my control.
Most people don't think for themselves and believe what others tell them and build their biases accordingly. This is the problem. This is also why so many black kids grow up being told that whitey wants to kill them through police brutality - and the fear of that police brutality makes them behave irrationally CAUSING the police to take reasonable measures which sadly end up sometimes killing them. By inculcating fear and hatred - black parents and "community" unknowingly become the cause of these tragic events.

Here in rural India racism is pretty much normal, intertwined with casteism. By woke standards honestly applied, there probably isn't any country in the world that isn't irredeemably racist. Good thing the woke have different standards to apply to different countries
Being considered racist just because I'm white is quite insulting. I've also easily and with an open mind observed which US demographic is actually racist currently in our country. I don't understand why everyone can't see what I see especially with our nations hyper focus on race. We have a new group of racists hiding, even from themselves sometimes, out there in our country. Here is something to think about. As a white, person I'm told that fighting for the rights of white people is racist. But, there are 9 billion people worldwide and ls than 1 billion are white. is it racist or should white people be able to preserve our heritage since we are clearly the overwhelming minority? Nobody wants to talk about the facts.
Any personal failures are usually put down to racism, instead of lack of ability. I am white and my failures haven't been due to racism, but my lack of intelligence/ ability.
Fun fact: even blaqs in America think blaqs are the most racist....and I heard that from a blaq guy. Whites and Latinos also believe it. Rasmussen has done polling over a decade. It had been basically flat since ~2000 until the "if I had a son he'd look like Trevon" speech and BLM was founded in 2013. It has taken a nose dive since. So much for the 2nd blaq President bring an end to the racial divide. ( Bill Clinton was the 1st blaq President....look it up)
Its true - America is institutionally racist. Things like gerrymandering, based on race go on all the time. One doesn't need to be up on specific laws to know that, kind of like how one doesn't need to know the intricacies and differences between automatic and semi-automatic weapons to know that the US has a gun problem
If I make a law to burn all your forests, then after doing so i outlaw such practices, there are no laws against you. The law is now neutral. Hey, now let's have a competition called "who has better forests?". It's a fair game, the laws are neutral now. Funny how I keep winning
@@lilmoe4364 Allow me to paraphrase your argument: "One does not need to know anything to know that, kind of like..." This is highly convincing and demonstrates intellectual maturity.
@@lilmoe4364 I respectfully disagree with your premise the United States has a gun problem. It takes a deranged person to willingly kill others. That's a mental health issue. Do you think we should ban cars whenever there's a series deaths due to impaired driving? The result is the same: death of innocent, or unintended, victims. Yet, because of ease of movement and the freedoms offered by ownership of vehicles, society tends to overlook that part of the equation. In terms of America being racist, again I respectfully disagree with you. The instances of gerrymandering you pointed out is isolated to specific areas. It is not a nationwide phenomenon. I'll grant there are individuals who have a racist opinion. But then again we as humans have biases in one form or another. Whether those biases are for, or against, one group or another. They just heard something someone else said and went oh yeah, that sounds about right, and there is ZERO questioning past that Capitalism is racist Can you explain why you think that? Oh, I've never thought about it, I just know
What they don't want to admit is that what they are saying when they say that, is that there are too many rich white people. That it's not fair for them and they can't get rich because they aren't white enough or in the club. When they fail to realize there would be no rich black, asian, middle eastern, etc. people in our capitalistic economy/country if that were true. They just want to hate "America" and find an acceptable way to hate wealthy white people. I wonder if they would go to India and call it racist because most of the rich people there are Indian. It's not about America being racist, it's about America not looking the way they want it to I'm pretty sure.
The problem is that they haven't been taught the actual history. They know nothing of the intentions of the founding fathers, nor what the Constitution as currently amended actually says. All they know is, it was written by white men some of whom owned slaves therefore it is tainted and must be thrown out. You can't debate ideas if you don't know what they actually are and only spout what someone else has told you are the system's flaws. As to "Capitalism requires inequality", I'm sorry, life is inequality and anyone telling you otherwise is lying for their own gain. @@drcidd8153 I think just cuz fundamentally if your passionate about something you you might be more likely to double down on your own views and be at risk of your biases rather than addressing the actual matter. As well as wanting to feel purposeful could mean just trying to pursue self fulfilment and that could also lead to biases. A counter argument could feel like an attack on your identity which is why I think during hot topics like this we should aim at trying to suppress our ego’s and try to look at arguments of both sides before settling on a conclusion. But as humans, a highly emotional being i don’t think it’s 100% possible, nothing is black or white, but still a good and important exercise if we actually wanna get somewhere with all this

His poorly articulated point is that privately run (i.e. capitalist) prisons benefit from having a larger number of inmates, and for a longer period of time. In order to become an inmate, the convict needs to have transgressed the laws of the land. Some groups - for example Jews, find it particularly easy to live within those laws. But then again they would - they have been living within those laws for several thousand years, and they've learned to succeed within them. Other groups have no history of living within those laws. And so you have lobbyists for prisons trying to keep legislation in place which maintains their customer base. A good example might be laws around the selling of drugs.

@@MK-oz2lf - And all we sing is the first stanza. Also, consider the times it was written (1814). And it's set to the music of John Stafford Smith's music for The Anacreontic Song.
"Many are quick to say that Key was talking about slaves who joined the British army to fight for their freedom, but we have to look at the specific context of the War of 1812 and the actions of the British before and during the war. Thus, “hireling” refers to the mercenaries who fought for the British (typically German hessians), and “slave” most likely refers to the American sailors impressed by the British navy and forced to fight for it. It could also just refer to the British force as a whole, as they may have been slaves to the tyranny of their king and government (in Key’s eyes). However, even if we do assume the worst - that Key was a racist who specifically targeted ex-slaves in his song - and believe that that part of the song is racist, that wouldn't really change anything, as that part of the song has not only not been used for centuries, but there have been verses added that openly condemn slavery (most notably Wendell’s “fifth verse” from 1861), and the parts of the anthem which are sung contain no racist sentiments. Therefore, the national anthem is not racist. "It is a reference to cowards and appeasers. The song commemorates the war of 1812, praising the heroes who fought to defend the flag. Each verse ends praising “The land of the free and the home of the brave” The third verse reads - And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave The “hireling and slave” refer to the “band” of line 1. Permit me to translate into modern vernacular so the meaning is clear And where are all the people who bitched so loudly That if we fought for our freedom, the chaos and destruction of war Would wreck our country? Well, the battle came to them, and that ended their foul influence. Those who preferred to debase themselves and live in servitude to a foreign master in the hopes of not getting hurt Had no escape from the terror of flight, or the fear of death. While those who fought in the name of freedom triumphed. While some feel the reference is to slaves who fought for the British, the fact that they are identified in the first few lines as believing that war would destroy the country makes me skeptical that he is talking about fighters. It seems to me the passage is referring to those who believed in appeasement, and who argued that if America just surrendered to the British, and gave them what they wanted, no one would have to get hurt. The line about not being able to escape their own fear of death echoes the ancient proverb: The coward dies a thousand deaths, The brave man, only one."
I like this style of Q&A. It forces people to be introspective about their opinions and brings to light how much time they've spent actually thinking for themselves vs how much they just regurgitate of what colleges and mass media shove down their throats.
Yes it's called critical thinking, it's something many people learned to do without being promoted by an epistemologist, sadly most youth are just taught to mindlessly obey and have faith in the new secular cult.
Oh you youngins...."Critical Thinking"; must be the new 'Woke' term for what has always been good ol commonsense. No doubt from a liberal arts college professor. And know it doesn't make one sound more intelligent or superior....just young, inexperienced & arrogant. Just state your point without trying to intellectually insult someone. It really has the exact opposite effect. If your point actually has merit, it will stand on its own without a childish insult. And you claim to be a Critical Thinking expert prior to showing your youth & inexperience? LOL! Save your thumbs. I never read responses about such self-serving, bitch-about-everything, intellectual wannabe topic experts. PEACE...

These interviews are fascinating and completely disturbing at the same time. Listening to these young college students makes me incredibly fearful for our country in just a few years.
It’s so easy to spot the people who’ve had neglectful and/or ignorant parents/guardians in their life and development and have failed to evolve their thinking.
Peter Boghossian has a heart and mind of gold. God bless him. Signed....an atheist professor. As for the students: they should have been taught research methods--there are ways to look at big data and approximate or guess at causes in a much less subjective way than they know about. Thomas Sowell is an example of someone who attempted to do that. Shame on Berkeley for making young people bend away from the truth--the truth that these countries are currently objectively the among the most egalitarian in the world, ever.
So let me get this straight: an international student from an economically collapsed country with a repressive regime is calling America racist and blaming all its ills on capitalism? Why bother even coming to study in the U.S.? Would love to see how far he'd get hurling such critiques at his own government in Venezuela.

I love this premise that you present to these young kids. You are making them face truths or different aspects of their beliefs that they maybe have never considered before. It sounds like these kids left with a bit more of an open mind than what they arrived with - I hope. Keep it up!
This is part of the problem. These are not kids. We keep moving the goalposts of what constitutes a child, infantilzing grown adults. A 15 year old from the 60s was more mature, adjusted, and rational than a modern college student. That is absolutely absurd. We keep lowering the standards for people, and what do you expect will happen? Look at where we are now. These are full-grown idiots.
What I learned is that colllege students are horrendously uneducated and unable to formulate cohesive thoughts. Its incredibly depressing that these young people are our future.
Look at yourself first, this process didn't start yesterday. If you are under 65 years old ,then you are just like these students. You, too, were fed an equally squalid educational diet and emerged just as intellectually deficient. I am a foreigner, I'm black BUT, surprisingly, whites have given me the least amount of grief from ALL demographics, including Brazilians who live in the US. Yes, there's racism in the US but not as bad as advertised.
Good luck convincing me otherwise. I know what I can plainly see and don't care to ignore it any longer. You shouldn't either. Thanks for joining us in this country and I sincerely hope things improve here for all of us.
Search "Rasmussen American most raycyst" spelled correctly of course. Another fun one is "racial satisfaction poll by Gallup.

"I know America is racist institutionally."
"No, I cannot name a racist law."
Its true - America is institutionally racist. Things like gerrymandering, based on race go on all the time. One doesn't need to be up on specific laws to know that, kind of like how one doesn't need to know the intricacies and differences between automatic and semi-automatic weapons to know that the US has a gun problem
No one can
If I make a law to burn all your forests, then after doing so i outlaw such practices, there are no laws against you.

Exactly. They take bs tv talking points and try to appear knowledgeable. Unfortunately their words hang them
This is SO exactly true ! I'm glad you said it
What they don't want to admit is that what they are saying when they say that, is that there are too many rich white people.
This statement just points to another young mind filled with utopian visions with no knowledge of the atrocities those same visions have resulted in historically.

This is great, I love what prof. Boghossian is doing. Making people think. Even if there's only one or two people who learnt something from this, it's still a great success.
Terrifying kids. This is what led to Pol Pot
"We need to erase the history that has been done" - Major Freudian slip that should sent chills down your spine.
Thanks for doing this. I love your approach and the way you encourage a discussion. Respect.
Crazy how you can hold such a strong belief about something and at the same time be unable to produce a sufficient reason for your belief. This 'strongly agree' guy is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the woke culture.
I sincerely want to understand the ledt but I feel I just can't toss out that much logic. I don't get it. How do toss out such contradiction without your brain exploding.
it's just group think.. I used to lean more to the left, but I'm starting to realize how toxic woke culture is
@@skidmodaI don't think you'll ever understand it. I have tried for years, but they can't explain it themselves.
"We need to destroy and rewrite the constitution".......one question later
"I'm from Venezuela, I don't know the American constitution"
Jesus fucking christ do they not hear themselves?!
They don't have any solid facts or reasoning for their positions, yet somehow are sure they are correct...
Pretty much. They believe something so strong with literally no facts to back it up except for how they feel…
In my experience, the stronger someone's position on a given subject is, the less likely they are to have considered or analyzed it deeply and thoroughly.
@@lucasfabisiak9586 that's true, most subjects are not black or white. They haven't considered the nuance
They're arrogant and Narcissistic
Brilliant observation, Luke. I can think of a sizable number of Americans with that identical mindset, they are Trump voters (virtually none of which attended UC- Berkley or any institution of higher learning, for that manner. Fox News is far more to blame for the dumbing -down of the American population than ANY OTHER FACTOR!
I'm British and when he said your anthem was racist, I thought he was going to sat against us. Its a fantastic anthem and when I stood for it, with Americans of every stripe at a MLB game, it was one of my most pleasurable, spine tingling and memorable experiences of my life.
Yes I absolutely love their anthem!!! It is beautiful. I’m Canadian and I always love that moment at hockey games, even tho they play the Canadian one afterward ahhaa
he was referencing the 2nd stanza that has pro slavery characteristics
You should respond to the other guy bruh
Each verse ends praising “The land of the free and the home of the brave”
The third verse reads
-
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
The “hireling and slave” refer to the “band” of line 1. Permit me to translate into modern vernacular so the meaning is clear
And where are all the people who bitched so loudly
That if we fought for our freedom, the chaos and destruction of war
Would wreck our country?
Well, the battle came to them, and that ended their foul influence.
Those who preferred to debase themselves and live in servitude to a foreign master in the hopes of not getting hurt
Had no escape from the terror of flight, or the fear of death.
The line about not being able to escape their own fear of death echoes the ancient proverb:
The coward dies a thousand deaths,
The brave man, only one."
Thank you Peter this work needs to be done, amazing!!!
A systemically racist society would never:
1. Accuse anyone of racism;
2. Live in fear of being branded racist.
PEACE...
It also seems that Peter really has to think carefully about the words he is using and how to pose his questions and follow ups.
I have been to UC Berkeley and I am appalled at the level of groupthink and newspeak that seems to be going on over there right now. I don't remember any indoctrinated, confused, passive aggressive snowflakes among my fellow students then. Boy, times sure have changed.
This guy is great to use the socratic method. Keep asking questions and eventually people will realise how little they know. Moving away from falsehood is a step towards truth.
These interviews are fascinating and completely disturbing at the same time. Listening to these young college students makes me incredibly fearful for our country in just a few years.
What are you so afraid of? Things beyond your understanding?
You can think America is racist and still think its bettet than Venezuela.
@@d_wang9836 he's doesn't appear to know anything about America though. All he did was regurgitate Critical Theory gobbledygook. If you're not well versed on a topic, you should probably not be forming an opinion, let alone take such a hard line position.

I've lived in mixed neighborhoods for most of my life and find the most racist people are the ones that think they are the ones that are being discriminated against most. They are raised with chips on their shoulders and think they are owed something and don't need to earn it. College is really doing a disservice to all these kids.

Own definition. Own independent thoughts. THAT'S WHAT WE NEED MORE OF!
Hopefully blue collar people are our future.
Look at yourself first, this process didn't start yesterday. If you are under 65 years old ,then you are just like these students. You, too, were fed an equally squalid educational diet and emerged just as intellectually deficient. An overwhelming number of idiots was responsible for the election of Reagan (1980), just as 40 years later an equally stupid voter base pulled a lever for the worst candidate, ever, for the office,Trump.
@@trigjones Excellent point. To put what you said simply some people are just more dumbed down than others and lack the ability to think critically or have a longer attention span. This is what happens when you spend all of your time staring at a screen and living in an artificial world. Good emotional and cognitive balance go out the window.
@@sevilliane Yeah, she's right. But inequality isn't racism. So she's wrong about that.
“Currently the majority are racist.” In a backwards weird way, if not backed up by facts, this statement is really narcissistic. Because then one can claim to be one of the select few who truly understands this plight while looking down at the others who don’t.
That's the whole point of being offended by everything. If you raised hell because you're offended by every little thing then you stand out as the most righteous one every time. Pretty much no matter what the topic is. If you're the most emotional, you care the most. These people are ridiculous.
6:19 "Can you give me an example of 3 laws that are racist?" - "I don't know the US constitution".
The most honest statement I heard, was when he said I don’t know anything in the world. That’s probably exactly right
I love it when foreigners come here and tell us how racist we are.
"America is so racist! Capitalism ruins everything! X, Y, Z country is so much better!" - Person who chose to move to America instead of somewhere else
Cause if the country was institutionally racist they would only be cleaning bathrooms or bagging groceries (if they were allowed in the country in the first place) instead of going to one of the most prestigious Universities in the country. The human brain apparently doesn't have the ability to think critically at that age.
That one "guy" who said we need to just abolish everything and start over is absolutely correct. However, what he fails to realize is that he, and all of the other puppets like him, would be the starting point.

"Because it's racist."
