      and that sound... There were few sounds that evoked such a reaction from me, and the only other one was the startup of the rival music from Pokemon R/B...
      Yeah man... that shit is mindfuckingly creepy.

    Fantastic stuff as always, Todd! I've always thought that the SA-X does a great job of instilling fear in the player, but you phrased it so well here. There's a chase further in the game that I thought was even worse than where you left off, and it just highlights how the game keeps ramping up on you.

    I think if they could somehow make a game with the atmosphere and pace of Fusion but while still retaining the openness of Super it could be the best Metroid game of all time.

      Playing this one as a young kid was such a cool experience. Before you know about things like "hardware limitations" and "programming", the thought that it could be roaming around on its own at all times is TERRIFYING. They had me totally convinced this was the case, and booooy did I have some fun nightmares about that thing hunting me down.

    8:20 I love that encounter, because after you've calmed down from the shock (on a second playthrough perhaps because there was no way I was going down there the first time), you can toy around with it for a bit xD If you shoot while the SA-X is on-screen or at least close, it'll hear you and turn around, walk back to the end of the hall, then back to the door. You can actually shoot it if you drop down and shoot it quick enough, but if you're too slow in getting back up the ceiling, of course, death is imminent in the form of an ice beam + super missile combo. xD

    It would've been cool if this game had a higher difficulty in which the SA-X could appear anywhere, in addition to her scripted locations in the default game. I'm talking Resident Evil 3: Nemesis stuff right here. Imagine if after getting the Varia Suit upgrade, you start running into the SA-X every so often, your only warning being a change in the music.
    That would be SCARY. But it would be optional, and there would have to be areas where the SA-X couldn't appear at all so it would be fair. I wonder if someone could actually do this in the form of a rom hack or something...

    • @dooplon5083
      @dooplon5083 7 років тому +1

      JOSEPH MAGYAR Why not? Just put some rng that randomly decides to plop in an SA-X or not. All you need are two numbers, 1 & 2, with the first being a yes for spawning an SA-X and the second being a no and bam.

    • @charlir2954
      @charlir2954 7 років тому +2

      If I remember correctly, the SA-X could waste you less than 5 shots cause of that ice beam/freeze/dmg. I remember getting chased by it in the reactor area and had to open the gates, it was scary at first, but eventually got frustrating cause of the damage output. If it was RNG appearing, you would die too fast IMO, especially for the extremely unlucky people. SA-X in every second room Lol.

    • @Teknanam
      @Teknanam 7 років тому

      The main issue is programming the SA-X AI to properly maneuver through all the spawnable rooms without either getting stuck on structures. Nemesis in RE3 is easy since its just alot of hallways and flatland, but SA-X spawning anywhere needs to be able to get through a world designed around vertical platforming.
      I know someone has gotten the SA-X working for Super Metroid. Even got multiple SA-Xs running around.

    • @Luchux177
      @Luchux177 7 років тому

      metaXzero yeah, but thing would be running into the SA-X after getting the varia suit and getting it to appear every 10/15 rooms. Enough to let you continue, but also enough to remind you that your still being hunted down

    I know I'm really late to post here, but....listening to this amazing vid, a thought came to mind. You know what would make the SA-X 10 times more terrifying if done right?
    *If the SA-X was a roaming A.I with random encounters.* I don't mean, scripted events, I mean...amnesia the dark descent roaming, after all the sectors are available. which means, the SA-X would be literally hunting you down, and could appear at any time.

    • @MrKeyblademaster1992
      @MrKeyblademaster1992 9 років тому +2

      +SparksterX Or how about the multiple copies of it that are hinted at in the game, which I know for a fact someone is trying to put into their Super Metroid hack that is based on Fusion?

      Soooo Alien Isolation then?

    • @AJVersatility19
      @AJVersatility19 7 років тому

      The thing is you'll never progress through the game. Without those scripted rooms that have places for you to hide, and other hacks like the SA-X not being able to follow you into certain easily accessible rooms or on certain ledges, the SA-X will frickin destroy you early in the game. Imagine randomly encountering the SA-X before the ice beam upgrade? Or having it chase you around room to room until you're forced to take it in on and undoubtedly lose? They made it entirely too strong in the beginning for it to be running free. The one thing I'll agree to is the no less than 10 SA-X plot hole. You wander around the sectors looking for upgrades before the big showdown but you never encounter an SA-X which by this point in the game you can damage.

    • @Luchux177
      @Luchux177 7 років тому

      AJVersatility19 he said after all sectors are unlocked and maybe after you get the varia suit. Then it will be easier to survive and give you a dread feeling

  • @LearntheLore
    @LearntheLore 10 років тому

    omg I love this.
    I've been saying Metroid Fusion is basically a horror game for years. The nagging sense of dread you feel being pursued by a cosmic THING that you don't fully understand coupled with the terrifying feeling of solitude that every Metroid game somehow manages to capture effectively and you have a game that, without showing any gore or cheap jump scares, manages to be just as emotionally stressful as the best works of horror out there. You've already gone into this, but I felt inspired and like reiterating.
    Metroid Fusion is hugely underrated with regards to the rest of the series. As an experience, it's one of the best, if not THE best the series has to offer.

    Worst SA-X encounter? By far the one 'almost' shown in the video. You're trapped with the SA-X blocking the door, it walks up to the wall you rust bombed, thinks your little bombs are cute, morphs into a ball, and blows the whole thing down. It would have been neat if the Power Bomb it used brought your health down to a set amount, like the final boss.

    Personally Fusion and Super are tied for me because they offer two different experiences. Super is more about the solitude while Fusion is more about the threat and asks more questions. I know most people probably like Super Metroid more since it's more subtle, but I think experience Fusion gives emphasizes your helplessness even if it's more linear.

    Great game, my favorite 2D Metroid as well. It still has some of the exploration that makes Super Metroid so enjoyable, but adds more tension, often telling you to run, or hurry up. Not only encountering and having to escape the SA-X is scary, hearing that alarm after clearing Sector 5 and being told that the whole thing will blow up in few minutes is also very stressful. It's something the other games didn't achieve this well.

    Dang, that was an analysis like I was hoping for! You could see so much into it I'm sad there's not a whole series just on this game alone. I think this game has much to offer in narrative that's rarely ever touched upon. For instance, there's Nightmare shadow or Serris skeleton and other forms of antecipation of the encounters; the deadlier hybrids when you kill two different monsters in a room; the non-linearity of the sectors (you start in 1, then 2, and then it breaks loose and there's no pattern or safe predictability afterwards, that's brilliant); even obeying orders from an untrustworthy organization keeping secrets or retaining upgrades work to keep you feeling like having no real allies and how that's a different kind of oppression and loneliness, but still in tone with a fundamental theme of the series. And there's even the bittersweet ending when you're going to be held responsible for the destruction of the station. God, thanks for reminding me how much love I have for this game!

    You touched a special place in my black little heart with this review. Fear and desire are potent dramatic motivators.
    I'm an author and now to go full and brilliant Autismo, I'm gonna share a synopsis for a twisted Metroid Fusion sequel I've been tossing around for a while because what else am I gonna do with my super IQ. (sarcasm lol I'm not actually autistic) It plays on the fear themes which were psychologically essential to the good Metroid games. *echoes, super, fusion etc.* hell they're all good
    Metroid Fusion Sequel Synopsis
    TL;DR it's awesome, thanks for reading :D
    Breaking out of a grotesque alien cocoon, Samus finds herself in a dark mysterious facility. It's been overrun with horrible space monsters and her weapons and gadgets are mysteriously missing (surprise, surprise). Armed with only her power beam and a sporting a mysterious new Chozo power suit design, Samus treks through the facility to look for answers. The dry corpse husks of Metroid vamped creatures litter the battle scarred halls. "What happened in this place?" the player wonders. Soon space pirates appear, but instead of fighting Samus with typical feral ferocity, they cower, whimper, and scuttle away into dark nooks and crevices at the sight of her. Samus senses that they're packed thick between the walls. Fear, is a powerful motivator. As per the formula, Samus explores the facility and discovers new items and weapons that help her progress. She discovers that she has been stalking the halls of a giant space pirate archeological complex built on top of a Chozo temple; inside the icy caverns of a glacially encrusted jungle planet littered with acid pools. This presents a problem for the player as Samus, still suffering from the effects of the Metroid vaccine, cannot traverse the extreme cold of the ice jungle caverns outside the facility without endangering herself. These caves appear to be the only way forward; and possibly out towards survival. However, the resourceful bounty hunter discovers a piece of space pirate tech which can keep her warm; the primitive device is fueled by a flammable liquid and must be manually lit to produce heat. Having acquired an old school flamethrower, and packing up plenty of fuel, She attaches it to her suit; it's not as slick as Samus' classic upgrades, like the screw attack, but it will do the trick. Not only does it prove to be a powerful weapon, the flamethrower also provides emergency heat, but, though enchanting, the power of fire also proves to be a liability. The destruction of flammable materials can alter previous environments; destroying pirate structures, and setting fire to rotting chozo ruins, rendering both inaccessible, lighting up dark area's, or opening up new paths (a sick twist on classic re-traversal gameplay). Samus uses the flamethrower to help her navigate the subterranian alien ice jungles. Ice-monsters cower in fear at the sight of her and her flames. Eventually she discovers a Federation ship that crashed through the ice, leaving a path to the surface. It's locked down tight, but it doesn't matter; she's free (or so the player thinks). Samus climbs out through the top of the jungle, out of a glacier onto a vast icy desert. There is nothing interesting in sight, apparently for miles, and not knowing where her ship is located, Samus is effectively stranded. The player should feel pretty betrayed and hopeless. There are a lot of psychological tricks to evoke that emotion that should be employed here; for example space pirate skiffs circle in the stratosphere like vultures. The only visibly distinct feature is a light smoke from the hole. With nothing to run to in this cruel and hostile nothingness, Samus returns to the hole and jumps in. After the depressingly long climb down into the glacier, she reaches the Federation ship; and something is very wrong. The doors of the once locked down ship have been forced open. As Samus explores, dead space pirates and federation shock troops litter it's interior. Blood from both sides splatters the walls, and yet a trail of space pirate bodies leads back into the frozen caverns; implying that something or someone, powerful, survived. Samus, exploring the interior of the ship, reaches the bridge. Hacking into it's computer she discovers that the ship is inoperable due to a malfunction in the reactor core. The reactor is unstable; emitting trace amounts of beta radiation into the atmosphere. This has apparently killed much of the crew. Samus, the player, pulls up a log of all previous transmissions. Starting with the final transmission, she plays it back; it is a top secret mission briefing from a Federation A.I.. It's "Adam" speaking. Samus settles in to the captain's chair and listens. "Mission briefing File 1A. The Federation thanks you for your service in this operation. Having been informed of the odds of your success, and despite our having withheld additional intelligence data, you volunteered. You are the best of the best. It is my duty and pleasure to inform you, at this time, that because of this you have been preemptively awarded the Federation's Medal of Honor for your bravery. We thank you and salute you. As you organics like to say; "Good Luck". The details of your mission have been previously classified. The veil is now lifted, gentlemen. The subject you have been sent to destroy is the cause of the, in my opinion, poorly disguised disaster on science vessel Red Disk. No doubt you were aware of this tragedy; it was not caused, as declared in official reports, by station-wide outbreak. The subject, hereto referred to as Synth M was the result of experiments performed against the will of your team leader. Other experiments, like the successful progeny of the Synth F project were compromised by the disaster on Red Disk, so you can rest easy; you are against the final danger. Synth M destroyed the Red Disk and fed on the corpses of the scientists who created it. It is extremely volatile and must be exterminated with extreme prejudice. Respect the tactical and strategic insights of your team leader as she had intimate personal involvement with the creation of Synth M. Four months after the event on Red Disk, a federation rescue crew discovered the disaster and rescued your team leader. In her debriefing she informed federation officials that a Pirate Militia, led by generals she referred to as "Ridley Spawn" abducted Synth M. Forensics crews later verified this. The Ridley Spawn and their pirate crew were tracked to the previously uncharted planet which we now orbit. They likely understood the strategic value of an icy environment as a containment precaution in dealing with Synth M. Scans of the planet show advanced Chozo architecture. It is my conjecture that the pirates will attempt to augment the Synth M with Chozo bio-artifacts in an attempt to weaponize it. It's just a theory, but this would complicate our mission. If this is the case, again, defer to your team leader for tactical and strategic insights, as she has unique expertise in Chozo bio-technology. According to research data gleaned from Red Disk memory banks, progeny of the Synth projects retained the memories and combat capability of your team leader despite their new unique biological matrices and properties. These properties include asexual reproduction when exposed to beta rays, increased strength, volatility, and decreased sentience in each successive generation, along with a drive towards cannibalism of previous generations, energy vampiric nodes and fangs in the mouth, upper chest, and hands, potential for flight capability at maturation, and of course, weakness to extreme cold. Again the subject is extremely dangerous. Destroy the target in less than ten hours. A federation cruiser is prepped for orbital bombardment of the planet in ten hours as a failsafe. And Team Leader, though I am an A.I., I feel obligated to apologize to you on behalf of Adam Malkovich and the federation. I feel deeply that it was not within our right for federation scientists to experiment with you in the way that we did, and now we must ask you to kill what is, in some perverse sense, your offspring. We appreciate your willingness to participate in this mission and I am sure the team will support you. Lead them well. I have just been informed that our reactor has been sabotaged..." The transmission ends and Samus is worried. The player walks to the bridge's viewport and peers into the reflection. The player removes "her" helmet. Peering into the reflection a teenage boy stares back, attractive, besides the translucent green skin revealing red flesh, piercing black eyes, fangs, and Metroid sucker laced throat. He was the bastard of science and his mother's Metroid vaccine; deceived by his mother's memories and the space pirate's gift of a Chozo power suit into the belief that he was Samus! (that's a good horrifying gender bender surprise twist right there, perfect for a Metroid game.) Then the beta ray's leaking from the sabotaged reactor trigger the horrifying process of asexual reproduction; thrown writhing to the floor, Synth M's violent offspring begins to form as a squirming and pulsating cell cluster trapped inside the power suit. The cluster has no space to form so it is squeezed by the building pressure of it's growth out of the suit across Synth M's body, up his throat, across his face, and onto his forehead. In moments, another uncanny hybrid Metroid and Human monster bursts from Synth's forehead; a savage, human-like bipedal Metroid horror. It's a boss fight. Synth M is about to defeat his non-sentient Metroid-Human brother, when Samus proper arrives. In her fully powered Varia suit, she guns down the new Metroid Spawn with her Ice Beam. She approaches her terrible creation, Synth M, and is about to mercilessly slay it, but she hesitates, knowing that it is, in a sense, her son. Synth M, the player, takes this hesitation as an opportunity to escape. Samus blasts away furiously but Synth M makes it out just in time. The rest of the game is a cat and mouse adventure in which Synth M must avoid his deadly mother, seek fuel for his flamethrower, shelter from the cold, drain the energy from local fauna and space pirates to reach maturation, gain flight to rescue his mom from the Ridley Spawn generals who capture her and subject her to yet more beta ray experiments, he must avoid the constant threat of her punishing icebeam fire that might come around every corner, and find some way to escape before the planet is bombarded. There is no escape. At the climax, Samus incapacitates Synth M and brings him to the center of the Chozo temple. There is a stasis vault, big enough for one creature. Samus, in a merciful act of self sacrifice, throws her progeny inside. She names him Jason and seals it shut, just as the orbital bombardment starts. Will Synth M ever be discovered? Is he sentient and cogent enough to fight for his continued existence? Was Adam Lying, as all stereotypical sci-fi A.I. do, on behalf of the federation? Do the mysterious Synth F creatures still exist? Who or what sabotaged the ships reactor? Was the entire mission a ploy by Samus to rescue her children? How far will a mother go for the love of her child even if it is a creature of another, terrible, species; like Metroids? Did I just kill off Samus, one of Nintendo's most beloved videogame characters? Of course not, she'll be back for the sequel and questions will be answered as Samus embarks on a Tarantino style revenge filled quest against the Federation for their brutal experiments on the Red Disk.
    So that's my humble Metroid Fusion sequel. I like it and have a pipe dream that Nintendo might hear about it, use it, and pay me royalties. lol Metroid. Sorry for being an obnoxious nerd waving my barefaced fanfiction around. At least it's hella badass :P

    damn i never thought about metroid so deeply like i was somewhere and SAX would follow me? I was more like oh i must go there but i have to find another path. I just enjoyed the game especially the mechanics and the mobility that samus offers which was extremely satisfying. As far as i remember i was a bit on my toes when i encountered SA-X (which in my opinion comes from Samus Aran X) but nothing that much scarier compared to horror games. I really enjoyed the game and metroid series is on of the best games ever made

    This is why I love metroid. I will admit I'm one of those guys that will say I didn't care much for the prime series. But over all I still love metroid. I'm that person who hopes a new metroid will come out in the style of other M just with a little less cutscenes. I don't mind the story. I actually liked it. But they could have done it better. Also they could have made other M a little more open ended as in the paths to get to your destinations. But that's just me.

    Great video, about one of my favorite games. But in regards to fear, you ignored (possibly due to SPOILERS: the security bot).
    When it came to those encounters, I was more afraid of it than the SA-X. But the stupid spider topped all of that. Gross thing kept me from beating the game until I manned up.
    12 years later, beat the game once.

    SPOILERS AHEAD - but there's more scary to this game aside from the SA-X... The first being the mysterious transmission Adam receives. You don't even participate, not even close to it...you don't know what the hell they're talking about, now there's more to wonder and more to fear...then the power shuts down. Now you've got to make your way in and through the darkness to restore the reactor core (not to mention the ice Ridley that suddenly breaks down without explanation).
    But that's just not it, then comes Nightmare. You're back from your stroll to ARC to find some shadow shaking your ground. Adam doesn't explain jack, not until it's too late and nightmare's already wrecked the whole sector.
    After all the sh*t, you start to find out the federation is hiding something, you don't know what, just things get creepier and stranger. Until you find accidentally the barrier to the secret lab on NOC. You can't even get past but already triggered some alarm. When you can pass through, you get to the freaking Metroid lab that puts you to test as your exploring, start listening to noises and when you come back there's it, the SA-X and the destruction of the lab. You haven't even digested what you just found and you have to leave it already or die...
    . Also the mixed feels when finding a scientist (another human being!) that in reality was an X ... Of course that following a sudden meltdown sequence that just triggers outta nowhere when you're strolling around some other sector.
    Holy crap I remember all the details and all the feelings caused by this game. Really awesome. Also the feels knowing the animals are in your ship.

    even though I never played Metroid Fusion the Metroid Prime games are probably indirectly a sequel to Metro Fusion with it's very well paste nuggets of Horror and from what I can tell if Metroid Fusion I definitely would like to try it but I do agree with the title so much but this shows that even normal ideals that would not fit can be done correctly with the right people manning the stations of work I never think the Metroid going from an action game to a horror game slowly with each installment get it's perfectly done it how amazing it's very funny if you think about it the Metroid had a lot of inspiration from the alien movies yeah we can tell how well they take the inspiration I never knew it but there's a tidbit of information for the day it's probably bad that the X parasite even in a cutscene like scared me for a couple days but that shows you how well they done it considering I barely get scared of anything one thing I think that helped the horror was the likelihood of something like the X parasite only being slightly fictional Noggin did a video saying that quote it is similar to something in our real life and only stretching it slightly something like X parasite I can see in real life and a couple years of computer programming on the nanoscale Fused of biological info could easily make something likes it

    Samus' Checklist for Fusion (Slight Spoilers) :
    1.) Investigate/Report to Adam
    2.) Aquire upgrade from Data room
    3.) Search for Security Room to Unlock Data room
    4.) Report back to Adam
    4A.) Take Detour
    4B.) Fight Boss/difficult enemy
    5.) Go to different Sector because the data room here is destroyed
    6.) Repeat steps 2-4 until all sectors inevitably have to be open.
    7.) Ask yourself if the X have spread to every available area.
    8.) Run into the SA-X and escape
    9.) Realize GFHQ stop sending you upgrades
    10.) Start asking questions that you probably shouldn't (Come on Samus, you know GF Superiors are shady)
    11.) Somehow become a technomancer and spread your influence to an AI
    12.) Give yourself a countdown
    13.) Live life as a Rouge Bounty Hunter because you did a big nono to the GFHQ.

      kind of. they both infect a host to attain combat forms and can use the weapons of their infected hosts, but that's where the similarities end. while you can fight the flood in it's base form, it is near impossible to fight the X in it's base form. the X have a natural predator where the flood do not.

      That's a good topic for an extended discussion (rather than UA-cam comments), but in short, as far as Fusion's is concerned, Adam being an A.I. with a... well,to avoid spoilers, let's just say he's keeping a secret, and that's his primary function- rather than him being in a position of power above Samus, makes a big difference. He's more like an... uppity bouncer at a shady club than a superior.

      ***** You know, it's funny. I unintentionally ignored anything Samus said in Other M. I kind of blanked out during most cutscenes I have no idea why. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the game as a result. Not a favorite in the series, but I certainly found it really fun. For the longest time I couldn't understand why people hated the game. Then I went back and actually paid attention to the narrative and understood why.
      Try it sometime. Play the game and just ignore the narrative. You might enjoy it more.
