each and every knife has its own personality and quirks. I love my Burnley CRKT Squid. I had thought to change it over to Phosphor Bronze washers initially but this is a really a case of it not being broken and not needing a fix. The Squid on plastic washers is butter smooth (opening and closing) and mine (as well as a couple of others at the shop where I bought it) just fly open with a solid and convincing snap. The blade on the Squid is a scaled version of the blade on the Burnley Aux folder and the physical method of deployment is almost identical in that I use the end of my thumb and nail edge to push it open, even though the Aux has a disk and the Squid has a stud they both open the same way, they even middle finger flick open the same way. The Aux offers the ability to do a front flip open with a thumb roll on the jimping just in front of the disk which unfortunately you cannot do on the Squid.
If you want to use a lanyard cord on the Squid it would be a good idea to disassemble the knife and file smooth the inside edge of the lanyard cutout in the spacer as the inside edges are very sharp and will in time cut any cord you insert there. If you are going to do that you might just as well open up the show side handle cutout a little to make access to the lockbar a bit more comfortable. With a grinder I think that this knife could be adjusted to make front flipping a viable option just as it is on the Aux. I have the black wash version of the Squid and a little gun black will make any such modifications disappear after the fact. Regarding the clip, I am comfortably able to get a three finger grip on it making deployment simple and astoundingly secure. One of my initial concerns was that the knife would fly out of my hand when I tried to flip it (being so small and smooth) but the Squid is one of the most secure in hand knives that I have to open thanks to the position of the clip and the blade can be made to rocket open with a solid thwack which always surprises me given the small size of the blade. Definitely one of the best/most fun flippers that I have.
I never thought that I would find a knife that was more fun to flip and that can flip harder than my Kershaw Fraxion, in a smaller (though heavier package) and for a lot less money, the CRKT Squid is that knife.

THanks for your review. I got mine 3 years later and is a much better knife. The sides are parallel, the stud is solid. I leverage the pocket clip for leverage to open the blade and have found it to be quite a good little knife.

Great indepth review mate.i am really on the lookout for smaller budget knives at the moment this was on my list but to be honest every point you hit would annoy me to.i reviewed a we sanrenmu last night with two inch cutting blade which is amazing value at six bucks.atb paddy

Agree with your review, I really feel the same way about my 'Squid'. I kept thinking that it'll loosen up but it hasn't, the knife has really great potential, and so much more could have been done at the factory but wasn't. More bad news, the blade washers are Teflon, and the back lanyard spacer is just black nylon. I console myself thinking that's about what you get for $17.00.
