It's so important to have this solid foundation. I've been playing for several years and I struggled with this. There are many aspects of life where one must go back to the basics to keep that foundation in-tact. Thank you for the reminder.
I have been guilty of giving Pillar 2 short shift, but you've shamed me into changing that. And one thing I'd make mandatory (not optional) is singing the melodies you are trying to pick out. Even if you're not a good singer, it's a great way to internalize the melody and strengthen your ear.
I struggle at the very base level. If, for example, you would play an A note and ask me to sing that note after you play it, I couldn't do it. If I play a note and keep it sustained for a long period of time, I can eventually get my voice to find it. Is this sort of thing normal, or is it a hopeless situation or somewhere in the middle? Suggestions appreciated.
very normal! working on it a little every day, with simple nursery rhyme kind of melodies can really build that bridge. the music will meet you half way!!
This tune also lays out nicely in the closed chop chord shape! No open strings or shifting, but you've gotta use that pinky 😊

Praying for y'all over there in NC. Heard you say a few days ago that it was "raining." That was an understatement, eh? Stay safe.
