Bafang BBSHD Motor Rotor Failure/Repair

- The motor was spinning (making a strange sound while doing so) but it was not moving the chainring. After we opened it up, we found the spindle had broken off the motor rotor assembly. New part is approx $70. Motor had 2,500 miles on it.

That happens when the start up current is set too high. Better give a bith of time to start spinning or you'll break something else. Some people goes on the throttle like a hammer and that trashes a lot of components. Nice video. Regards!
Holy smokes...this is exactly what happened to my BBSHD. I have replaced nylon gear with steel gear and replaced secondary gear and it still was making that loud knocking sound when throttle or PAS would start to engage...then the diaplay would shut off...rendering my bike useless. I had taken everything apart numerous times and had not realized that the small spindle part was actually broken off. Thanks a lot for this video. Cheers.
I’m in the repair mode for the same thing,although I replaced the entire core body.I would have like to see how you managed to get the magnet out.
Pliers, doesn't matter if you damage it because needs replacement anyways.

If you use a rag, or sheet of rubber, you can grip the spline in a pair of pliers, or in our case, we use a bench vise. Its definitely held in there strongly.
I had the same problem, was quite hard to remove the rotor. Had to force some bolts into the 4 little holes, then bend a coat hanger into a handle and pull with it secured in a vice.
Did you get an error code with this problem?

@@RobertAdams-ly5ku These instructions gave the the answers i needed.. These motors are straight forward to a mechanic. Things like replacing a controller, need better details, and to do that you need very specific skills. I' someone who usually messes up electronics..
What i got from this was it needed disassembly, then replace the rotor and reassemble i reverse order. He answered the question of why the motor sounded like it was spinning, but no motion was seen. this was instruction on how to diagnose a failure..
Is the gray mass on the engine control unit silicone?

Almost the same problem. Pedals spin, motor spins when using the throttle, but no drive to the chain. This has happened out on the trail - first a few years ago and then again today. After this has happened when coasting downhill (heading home) after sufficient number of bumps - it starts to work again. Can you help?
Dang Randall, thats a little strange for it to just start working again. Its been some time since your post, have you solved it by now? What happened? My only answer would have been to take it all apart and find out.

Hey David. I found out there was nothing wrong with the motor afterall, and now many years later it is still working. The problem was the front chain ring. When there was no power to the chain, the chain was actually off the front chain ring, but it was difficult to tell it was off but it was alongside the front chain ring. It seems embarrassingly simple, but I missed it until someone replied to me on this site. I hope that is all that is wrong with your bike as well.

Mine did the same thing. Does the rotor just pull out of the motor...or is there a "trick"

Same!! Greatly appreciated if you post a link if you find it. Best option I can find so far is replacing the whole motor for 200 usd but I don't wanna pay the 55 usd shipping to Canada.

Iam looking to get a BBSHD but anybody knows what the maximum voltage the original controller can take?

I haven't tried higher voltage, I only know from the internet that people speak 59-60 is limit.
For higher voltage you need a controller ASI BAC850 from Electroncycles.
