    Thank you for this thorough explanation of video stabilization. You managed to answer all of my questions with this rundown, as well as some questions I did not even know I had. Cheers, mate.

    Hi - thanks for the review - what I did notice in the last test unconnected with stabilisation was the moiré in the images it looked very noticeable.

      +mark shirley yes moiré and aliasing can be very visible in some situations with this camera.

    Hi,
    I have omd em5 and I have a problem with video performance. When I record video in a bus, the stabilization does not work really well. But when I walk the stabilization work quite well. Also same situation on fast panning. I wonder if omd em5 mark II have improvement on fast camera shaking and fast panning. Moreover in the bus the audio is terrible.

    At last I got a video on this Olympus OM D M5 II model which gives a real world demonstration of how the 5-axis stabilisation works. Thanks so much for that. I must have watched at least two dozen You Tube videos on this model but all of them have the anchor reading out the manual and specifications. I wondered why no one bothered to go out and test the image stabilisation with various examples like you did. Btw, yours is the first video which talks about digital stabilisation! But I have two questions. I use a humble Sony SR 10 camcorder which has digital stabilisation. The only problem with digital stabilisation is that in video close-ups the image loses sharpness. Does that happen in this model too? Second, if you use the stabilisation of this camera along with a steadicam then your footage will be like a Hollywood movie. Do you agree?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      Anil P Thanks. I haven't noticed any relevant loss of sharpness with digital stabilisation. With a steadicam, I think both IS could work but I would have to try it to be really sure. If you look at the video shot by John Brawley, he used a Defy G2 gimbal stabiliser with the E-M5 mark II and the result is really great.

    А что было на 4.59? Это так работает электронная стабилизация? Если её отключить,то не будет такого желе!?

    You said the second video shoot was filmed with the EM1, which doesn't have articulated screen. I wonder if it was the old EM5 or you really have a third cam of the OM series?

    Very useful, thanks.
    I´d like to use this camera to shoot casual handheld video though, and I´m used to excellent AF in video mode of my a6000. The contrast-AF in this model makes me think it should MUCH more unreliable though. Could you comment on that?
    Cheers.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      1650million unfortunately the AF isn't as good as for stills. Especially in AF-C it tends to hunt a lot.

      That´s what I suspected, thanks Mathieu. Panasonic GH4's video AF is still clearly worse than the a6000's, so I´m guessing no m4/3 for me, yet.
      Cheers

    Can you do a Similar Test with the GX8 with and with out Dual IS?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому +1

      +MexBytes Dual IS only works for stills. For video it will use software stabilisation in addition to the OIS with compatible lenses.

    If I use a steady cam with my M5 Mkii, which setting would you recommend for the 5 axis stabilization?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +GoProBro I would use the M-IS2 setting (sensor only) but perhaps you might not need to activate it at all and reduce the amount of distortion that the 5-axis stabilisation can produce.

    Ciao Mathieu e grazie per la recensione, davvero ottima come tutte le altre per altro.
    vivi a Torino?
    sono in procinto di passare al mondo 4/3 e sono indeciso se scegliere la 5 Mark ii o la Sony alpha 6300.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      Ciao, non vivo più a Torino da quasi due anni. Questo è uno degli ultimi video che ho girato lì prima di trasferirmi.
      La E-M5 II ha diversi vantaggi: stabilizzazione a 5 assi sul sensore (fra i migliori della categoria), sistema più compatto se guardiamo anche alle lenti e hai una scelta molto più variegata ed equilibrata, tante funzioni aggiuntive come il live time or lo scatto ad alta risoluzione, insomma e una fotocamera molto ricca ed avanzata sotto diversi aspetti.
      L'a6300 ha una tenuta migliore ad alti ISO, una gamma dinamica più ampia è funzioni video migliori con una qualità decisamente più alta.

      Grazie mille per la celere risposta :) mi occupo di fotografia a livello amatoriale e seguo come assistente un corso di fotografia, e sono più interessato al lato fotografico della macchina piuttosto che a quello video. penso quindi che la Olympus possa essere una buona scelta per me.

      Si e a mio parere ha anche controlli più intuitivi rispetto alla Sony.

    I am looking for a good camera for video with good built in body stabilization. what would you recommend?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому +1

      +andrewvanrhoberts The E-M5 II is the best choice for stabilisation but it has some aliasing and moiré issue. Otherwise there is the A7 II series.

    • @andrewvanrhoberts
      @andrewvanrhoberts 8 років тому

      +Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) It's a shame this camera has bad aliasing/moire problems. The 5 axis system seems to stabilize the four thirds sensor well. Even with the jello effect i am impressed. I am looking forward to next years model the Olympus E-M1II with the new Sony sensor that will probably have anti aliasing. It would be nice if it had a 4K option too, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

  •  8 років тому

    Hey nice video :) is it possible to use image stabilisation in 4k video mode?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому +1

      The E-M5 II doesn't record 4K video, only full HD (1080p) and you can use image stabilisation for video.

    •  8 років тому

      ahhh okay, good to know, thank you :)

    Im looking for a video camera to film sports, I was thinking about panasonic GH4, but sometimes I need to move without tripod, so stabilization is very important, Do you think that I can do it with that cam?, do you have any other suggestion?,

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      Andoni Villarreal The E-M5 mark II is certainly the best choice for stabilisation. But it depends what you mean exactly by moving without a tripod. If what you have to film hand held has lot of action in it you could rely on panasonic lenses with OIS. If you have to film hand held while you are moving with the camera then E-M5 II will give you better results.

    • @andonivr
      @andonivr 9 років тому

      Well; I need to film hand held but I do not need to move myself a lot, sometimes make some panning, but not too much, the reality is that I am doing that job with a 7d mark II and 18-200 IS, but is not working for me, probably because of my hands shake ( I have not good pulse) so do you think that Olympus can do the job… also the AF job ?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      Which kind of sport is it? Indoor or outdoor?

    • @andonivr
      @andonivr 9 років тому

      Normally is Outdoor, I film tennis tranings, is very rare that I need to film something indoor, do you have a suggestion?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      If you really want to improve stabilisation then the E-M5 mark II can be a good choice. The GH4 has a better AF in video mode. If you use manual focus then both are fine.

    Ciao, sono di Torino.
    Ma quindi consigli M-IS 1 o M-IS 2?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      +OTTO9 video production per movimenti preferisco l'opzione M-IS2 che da meno problemi di distorsione. L'M-IS1 funziona meglio con soggetti o situazioni statiche.

    Please use a better (located) microphone. Your voice is too soft and the gain you've had to use increases the ambiance making it difficult to hear you clearly. Even your soft background music overpowers your voice at times.
