and he did this without spot-lock and livescope. I met Paul and several of the old timers at a PAA tournament here on Cherokee Lake back around 2010, really nice guys. Shaw Grigsby was awesome and went out of his way to talk to fans. I was glad I went to the weigh-in because fans would be standing beside the anglers while they were at the water tanks, taking pics and just visiting.
That's how I salmon fish. The direct drives are the purest way to a perfect fight.... until you get a king and you're missing the leather pad mentioned above :-D
Watching this in 2021 while I’ve been in a slump. Weighed in maybe 13-15 lbs for 5. in my last few tournaments. I need me a 30 lb sack to go ahead & get back in the right mind of things. Listening to him say “ I only had 20-22 lbs for my first 5 “ made me laugh. I’d love to have that lol
That lake was unreal a few years ago. I had 13 8 lbers in a row on one point. Me and my partner caught 400 plus pounds in a day. Only weighed 5 plus fish. Heaven on earth. I actually quit fishing after that for years because nothing could compete.
Rod Crawford! Almost broke the record string of Bass for real...237pounds for 20 bass! The record still stands at 240 pounds of a string of bass. Came that close, my Brother's and myself on a spring morning March 8th 1987, our fish came from a place pretty close to where the record was set at Ocklawaha River. Monsters lurk there! What really made it all worth talking about is we returned everyone of the fish back to the exact spot She was caught. Memories last forever...
My son and I got to meet him at the last mlf tournament we went to. He is a super nice guy. Took pics with my 9yr old and signed a couple items as he gave him tips.
My top rig for this lake is a 6" senko Bl\Red with a 5/8 painted black brass bullet wt. The hook a 4/O Gamakatsu super line tied with power pro 30 or 50 lb green. my fav all around rig.
First, braid is much smaller diameter, so you can use 50 lb braid that is around the same diameter as 10-12 lb mono, so may as well use it and not worry about the line snapping. Second, when going for big bass that fight hard, a 4lb bass can break 10 lb test which is why it is suggested to stick with around 15-20 lb test line. I myself use 15 lb Pline CX and have never had a line break on bigger fish, even pike, 3 foot long turtle and catfish.
If you wanted to watch tv in my household growing up, you had to watch fishing or hunting. It’s all my dad would put on the tv. And after watching professional bass fishermen for 500 weekends, I decided to pursue a career in golf. I knew I could never outfish these guys. I can’t beat professional golfers either, but I’m still good enough to be a pro and give lessons to anyone who shows up at our course.
@Allaroundstuff pretty awesome man i actually went again wednesday and caught more than my limit the biggest was about 5.6 and all five totaled about 12.5 pounds roughly. awesome day.
Im from Hebbronville Tx which is just a few minutes or an hour from Zapata Tx and iv'e heard that Falcon Lake is being invaded by pirates which are people from Mexico...if that is still going on then i recommend that people stay away from that lake for awhile.
Beast clashers if you want to be like him you got to get some of these mann's jelly worms I currently have a pack sitting on my lap 12 in watermelon red
My buddy told me not to trow that bait here ,you’ll get hug up ,shor enough my bait stopped solid untill the stump came to life and swamp past him .he said my god that bass is as big as a football ,then my line went limp I lost him
back in the day, they only stared at it in between casts. Now, they watch it like a video game. I’d still love to see a tournament where only depth finders are allowed. No fish imaging displays.
I happen to know a girl that's Paul's niece and she is, and I'm not exaggerating here, one of the most beautiful girls on planet earth. and good as gold to boot. she said Paul is a great guy.
just in case you did not know the internet is global,is not just to be used in one country or in just one language, if you don't know another language STF UP! and start learning thanx. and have a wonderful day.
a man by the name of leon tidwell weighed n 54 pounds 5 fish in colbert county wilson lake alabama he needss to b promno one around here can come close to beatin him
Yeah def an incredible day. It mightve been called something different but i had no idea they were using live scope back in those days. IMO its straight up cheating. I mean hes sitting there looking at those monster bass and all he had to do was figure out which bait was gonna work the best
Nope. All they had was 2d sonar. This was done old school. Finding them in practice and shaking them off. Hes using marker buoys to try and line up his cast. Wouldn't need to do that with LiveScope. Are you a clown?
@@nrxhavoc first off I didn't ask for your opinion fff boy. I've only seen guys on TV yt use livescope and I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 2nd sonar but I know for a fact he's seeing those bass on his sonar or whatever. He basically talks about how those bass are suspended in like 25ft of water and the reason he sticks his pole way down in the water is bc that's the only way he can get his crank bait to dive deep enough. The way he's watching it he's gotta be seeing either the fish or the fish and his lure. Now it seems like you're the only fff clown coming in here acting like you fff know everything douche
I come back to this video and watch it at least once a year, it still gives me chills.
It will be engrained in my mind forever.

The kneel and reel. Love this technique is learned from watching Paul. Really gets that crank bait down deep.
I can't stop listening to the beginning of it it's giving me so much confidence
Paul is awesome, he has been at it for a long time and has caught much bigger fish for sure but this was a tournament for those who dont get it .
Do you notice that he doesn't use the drag?
He shifts the reel to free spool and uses his thumb.
That's what most long time bass fishermen do. Same thing with spinning reels, we don't use the drag but back wind.
had one had a leather pad to press on the spool from burning the thumb.
That's how I salmon fish. The direct drives are the purest way to a perfect fight.... until you get a king and you're missing the leather pad mentioned above :-D
drag on older reels where trash kinda had to do it in fact i still do it out of habit
How does that not turn into the biggest backlash ever??
Love the old school guys , I'm old school myself. trying to learn how to edit my own fishing experiences. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a big fan of the unpretensious Paul Elias and his generation of bass anglers. the younger guys are pop stars..too much show!
Exactly.... shut up and fish! Let your skills do the talkin
I remember watching this tournament with my dad live, just AWESTRUCK. To this day I still keep Mann’s Jelly Worms in my tackle box, JUST in case!
PAUL ELIAS is the man , kneel and reel .. get the extra 4' do it every time i go.
So badass with that golf or batting glove!
Paul is one of my favorite fisherman, great guy!

@@dgb2394 it's not so low that it's free spooling but I still use my finger. I don't use spinning reels either just baitcasters
Love those Mann’s patches on Paul’s shirt and cap.
I'm going to falcon this summer can't wait

I've watched this so many times that iknow all the words.

I am looking for Bruin Outdoors Paul Elias Legend Series Right Hand Baitcast Fishing Reel 7.3 or 8.1:1 used or new.
I have 2 bait casters and 1 spinning reel
this is the kind of legend you use for bedtime stories...
@idealano not really...he found the spot where the big fish were hanging out, threw baits that would appeal to big bass...(big baits) and he got em!
I remember going fishing with Bill Dance and Roland Martin
Does Paul still hold the record???
pues cuales son los del tio homer porque no creo que esten mejor que estos de paul elias.
6:21 what is the deal with the bill? I never saw one like that.
You may not see this since it’s been so long. But it’s called a hot lip old school crank bait. They go extremely deep
Paul Elias is a legend!
@idealano Not entirely. Getting on big fish takes knowledge and skill, using the right bait to get those big fish to strike takes the same.
gotta love deep crankin, congrats paul
@RGVfishing how did you do?
Big bass are fun to catch but the small ones are good to eat.
i wonder what the biggest bass that exists is..how big can they get?
Is this a private lake?
No, this is Falcon Lake on Texas/Mexico border
dino hunter no
Can you imagine if he had the active target technology then how big that bag would of been?
Hes got a nice lookin real, what does he use?
Quantum 650PT
Im from Hebbronville Tx which is just a few minutes or an hour from Zapata Tx and iv'e heard that Falcon Lake is being invaded by pirates which are people from Mexico...if that is still going on then i recommend that people stay away from that lake for awhile.
I don't see how he trusted that fluorocarbon setting that hook like that.
whats the weight dam thats big
is it just me or am i just a tiny bit disaponted thart mark zona was not narrerating this vid
Sweet video.
I wonder what mike Iaconelli what have done if he caught all the fish
Hyperventilated, got laryngitis, popped an aneurysm, and keeled over with a heart attack.....and that's just on the first three fish.
ahh....i've never watched this before but i notice he used alot of the technique i use too. =D
Do they put these fish back?
Yes.
People starting piercing fish before they started piercing themselves OR vice versa?
i want to be like him

Did he shake off or break off?
Yea they release the fish right after they weigh them, a lot of time and care is put in to make sure the fish survive, only a few die
MLF format is a lot better for the fish.
On what if you dont mind sharing? :)
A true legend!
just fished there this saturday
thats my uncle reeling them in (no lie)
All time great 👍

Mann’s jelly worm 🍇 grape 👍
It was a record under the circumstances in which he was fishing:)
just in case you did not know the internet is global,is not just to be used in one country or in just one language, if you don't know another language STF UP! and start learning thanx. and have a wonderful day.
