Angelica Garcia: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- This performance was recorded on Feb. 10, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

April 15, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Angelica Garcia decorated the Tiny Desk with colorful fabrics, orange flowers, a fuchsia dress, and a great deal of pride in what she calls her "Salva-Mex-American" heritage. Her song "Orange Flower" got my attention back in 2016, but I thought of her only as a Virginia rock and roller. Not anymore. Angelica Garcia's music in the 2020s embraces her heritage, her life growing up in Los Angeles, and the ranchero music she heard from her family. Angelica moved to Virginia at age seventeen. The songs she sings at the Tiny Desk, all from her album Cha Cha Palace, reflect the way she was seen, or more to the point, not seen, in her new home. "Jícama" captures that feeling of invisibility:
"I see you, but you don't see me
Jícama, jícama, guava tree
I been trying to tell ya but you just don't see
Like you, I was born in this country."
On the opening song, "Guadalupe," Angelica expresses respect for La Virgen de Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, singing "I wanna be like her." Guadalupe inspires her to declare that "power isn't defined by your physique." In this Tiny Desk concert, Angelica, along with her Richmond bandmates, powerfully convey the all-important message that we are all part of this country's colorful fabric, and we all deserve to be heard.

I can't get enough of "Valentina in the Moonlight". The foreboding intro conveys, with very few words, the tragic lot of Valentina and the narrator's love for her.
Then...
"Visions of your blood
mixed with my blood,
for miles and miles,
generations beginning with us"
These words project the narrator's love not just as a feeling, but as a sweeping, epic journey that merely starts with that first look in the moonlight.
Angelica's performance is dazzling. She embodies the song in this session. I listened to every other version available on youtube and the studio version, but for some reason, this rendition is the best. Tiny Desk brought out the magic!
This is out of this world, thank you NPR we really need all these live performances and i want just like other people add kudos to your sound engineer... you rock guys!
The opening song is epic!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Angelica Garcia!!
Every time I see her live, she has such a captivating stage presence and undeniable talent
Her eyeshadow made me click this video, she’s dopeeee 🔥🔥
same! always love that 60s blue🦋 so happy even more colors were waiting inside😍
That's purple dress tho.......ugh!!!!
Me too haha
@jimmie jenkins love is love...
Same
Wow! I saw her live in VA a year ago playing solo with only a loop pedal. Great to see her moving on up.
After watching Josh McCormick drum the Richmond scene for years, it is dope to see him on Tiny Desk. He is filthy on a kit.
No puedo dejar de ver esto en bucle!... Magnífico descubrimiento! Angélica... maravillosa 👌🏻😍
Why do people feel the need to mention other artists ! This woman just absolutely killed it - show some respect.
Brilliantly mixed by NPR...
She alright!
No one's being disrespectful. If they're being reminded of other artists they like then that is the effect her art is having on others. Maybe it's intentional. Don't get offended on her behalf. I enjoyed her performance.

I legit shed a tear when i first heard Valentina in the Moonlight in this specific performance. Her talent is breathtaking
Guadelupe is definitely on my short list for song of the year 2020
this woman is extraordinary. Keep going, Angelica!
Valentina in the Moonlight gave me goosebumps
imagine going to sleep with youtube and waking up around 10:00(just the right amount of sleep) & this song being on 🔥
the song Valentina deserves to have a movie based around the song itself!!!! SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Reminds me of Kimbra! Speaking of which, when is SHE getting a Tiny Desk?? This was great tho, not what I expected at all!!
Oh I can see that. Princess Nokia too. All good music.
Would love to see Kimbra on here!
Yeah, Kimbra´s last album is pretty cool!
ANGELICA IS THE FUTURE 🥵🥵
I love human creativity! It's infinite.
the authenticity of this girl is enchanting.
On repeat since I watched this video!
Her music makes her more beautiful than she already is.
That was cool, the second song had almost a prog rock feel
I can see that. The music reminds me of Jane's Addiction a little bit too.
Her best performance. The beggining is crazy! Love it
I don't typically listen twice, but she's great. Thoroughly enjoyed.
gotta say, this woman needs to let loose she has amazing control of her voice.
I also have to say her friend seems so proud but man I can tell you both are incredible singers far beyond anything I have heard.
Duskbones freestyling is on the same level.
Obviously the band as a whole just is dope, but some need to hear it more than others.
Massive love to everyone from NZ.
WOW, super creative, something actually NEW, you are awesome.
y'all should listen to her latest album, she's really dope!
datz on da real doe
angelica garcia is awesome! i got to see her live the other day as she was one of the opening acts for idles in cornwall and she was so enchanting! an absolutely magical performance and a powerhouse of a woman, it was honestly an insane set and if i were idles even tho they were the headlining band i would’ve been so intimidated having to play after such a performance from angelica
Punchy and unique. I like.
She is Fantastic!!!! like a latin Bjork what a beautiful voice she has and such great music!!!! the second song is wonderful!!!!
The whole session had a raw 70's vibe down to the vintage instruments and her make-up. Made me want to put on some bell bottoms and a tie dye shirt. Angelica Garcia's sultry voice made me wanna put up some black light posters and sit in a bean bag chair and stare at a lava lamp :) Definitely made a new fan today!
You saying that means you don't know a thing about the seventies
Sounds like a teenage after school garage band
this just got better and better annnndddd betttteeerrrrr with each song!
when is the free nationals being uploaded to yt?
Are you talking about a performance without A.P?
jamosensei yes, i know it’s on the website but i wanna see it on yt

Preston Williams thank you, i didn’t know that
@@dannymd5 ITS OUT NOW!
She go hard.
this has been a nice little discovery :) thanks, UA-cam!
Different than what I was expecting but I enjoyed it.
She must be paying homage to "Mimi" from "The Drew Carey Show". Mimi rocked this look for 9 years in the 90's.
rinnypink i understood this joke. I’m officially old 😂
@@jessicaj1189 Gotta give the next generation a quick fashion lesson lol. They made fun of Mimi but I always liked her makeup :)
rinnypink I rocked this look in the late 80’s, early 90’s!! Yeahhh😂
who is mimi
@Go Guerilla Foto yes her too :)
You Beauties!..oh my... Brilliant and Incredible.. x
Wow I enjoyed it very much, great vox!
THIS IS SO GREAT
Listened to her album the day it released and im so happy to her getting the very much deserved attention!
April Ludgate on bass
I've only just heard of Angélica Garcia (thanks, BBC R6 Music!) - one of those artists whose back catalogue you instantly want to explore. Loving it so far!
look forward to seeing how she develops her craft
Those prerecorded mixes together with the live performance make this great!
Her energy is addictive
I LIKE ”Valentina in the Moonlight” VERY MUCH ! 👏👏👏😎😎😎🌸🌸🌸
I'M SO GLAD I FOUND THIS!!!! IT'S INSANELY GOOD
we should all be so comfortable in our own skin
Utterly incredible. As a white man who lives 3000 miles away she makes me cry with joy every time. Such a talent. Best song about Catholism ever made.
Wow. She is amazing. Love the vocals and the power of the band behind her. Can’t imagine how difficult it is to nail a performance of this type. Intimate with unfamiliar equipment. You gotta trust your talents and your phenomenal band mates. And she succeeds, while making it look easy. Wow. This group better Make It.
Amazing!!!! AVE MARIA!
Her outfit + makeup looks like a tribute to PJ Harvey
@Go Guerilla Foto The music definitely has a Harvey vibe too
3:25 I see what you did there, John!
I literally was staring and amazed by her performance and talent. Such a power. Go Girl you earn my respect and a new follower 👍
I come back to rewatch this performance about every 2 months. So fantastic.
Compelling!
so cooool
The way she sings is like one of those oddly satisfying vids, its awesome
Is there a way to apply in order to play at NPR?
Aria Falco are you a musician? I would try contacting them through their various forms of social media. Good luck!
Uoww 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Found her from Forza Horizon 5. Glad I did she is so fun to listen to
Love her! Does anybody have the lyrics for Resucitado for me?
thinking to myself that love for music is so subjective for most people.. means if this band had won a grammy there'd be atleast twice as much views and likes for these very same songs haha their sound is so different!
brings me a kaiyote hiatus vibe
Wow, why isn't this band famous already?
I like.
He muerto, me encantó tu música Angélica, ya soy tu fan!!
Zoom tiny desk ! DO A ZOOM TINY DESK
We're doing a series Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts. Check it out!
This is so different and current at the same time!! She's in a lane of her own! What a power house.
