Interesting fact. A lion could actually lick a person to death. Their tongues are so rough they could remove your flesh down to the bone, just by licking you.

Been following Kevin's channel for some years now and never get tired of the way he talks about the animals he looks after with such passion. The knowledge he has about African big cats, as well the way he sees the world outside of the sanctuary he's built to house animals, is amazing and worth listening to while he's interacting with the characters under his care. He doesn't get jumped on or body slammed like in this video anymore with him getting on in life. But the bonds he has does warm the soul.
Would suggest more from Kevin Richardson, his sensibilies series is worth watching about how lions, leopards and hyenas use their senses. Also meet the characters series.

So many tribal types of channels tell the people they are introducing this stuff to that he's walking up to wild lions this way. He's absolutely NOT. He raised each and every one of them from cubs that had been rescued from poachers or found next to their dead mothers etc. They live in his animal sanctuary where he can protect them from poachers. He would never walk up to a wild pride this way. He knows better. And even though he loves these animals he has a ton of respect for them and what they can do and never forgets it. They in turn have respect for him too. He's not "living with wild animals." He's living with his lion children. And the primary reason that he is posting these videos is to inform people of the plight of the lions in Africa, which are rapidly going extinct thanks to humans.

Animals that live in groups and are social it is much easier. That is why we domesticated wolf. Cats are much more individualistic and not fully controllable (even the domestic ones), lions are one of the exceptions as they live in family groups. They are used to less adversarial communication. I expect binding with tiger or jaguar would be much more difficult. But there is a man that befriended polar bear (Mark Dumas is his name) so probably anything is possible. Once in many lifetimes.

I'm trying to think of youtube channels that explain how animals communicate very well. I know that Jackson Galaxy does a lot with domestic cats, and that both Clint's Reptiles ('Zoologist Reacts To Common Snake Myths and Misconceptions' and 'Why Don't I Get Bitten? 24 Tips For Reading Snakes & Avoiding Snake Bites') and Snake Discovery ('How to Read your Snake's Body Language') have explained snake communication really well. I don't know dog, bird, or horse channels so much but they're definitely out there. I also can't think of channels that specifically talk about how lions or tigers communicate but I know I've see people mention pieces before, like tigers chuffing as friendly greetings.
I mention this because to me at least, understanding how animals communicate and think does a lot to make them less intimidating. It's another piece of knowledge and one that can potentially be useful.

When an animal receives motherly love from a human as a baby, they develop trust with humans. It doesn't mean they are tame, it means they have received love from a human, and are less likely to kill and eat one. One should always treat their baby animals with love; so as adults they will be calm and cooperative. He is able to do this because some of the pride he approaches were raised by him. THEY remember, their pride mates don't. However, when the female hunters spot him and remember him, the other lions also develop trust. I love to see this stuff. I will likely die from trying to pet something that I shouldn't.

I remember reading some years ago that a lion's tongue is very rough and when they licked someone's hand it took the skin off. This was thought to be dangerous as the lion would then taste blood. Can't remember who wrote about it and it might have been Joy Adamson of 'Elsa the Lion fame' but I could be wrong. If anyone knows please tell me. Otherwise I think think this video is amazing - a picture of what is possible with courage, love, even if thought impossible.

    • @akinpaws

The whole "once a predator tastes blood it'll kill you" is silly. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat bloody meat all their lives. They can smell that people are animals, and animals are meat. If someone they care about is bleeding, they're more likely to lick the wound to wash it, trying to care for them.
As far as I've read, all cats have rough tongues. UA-camr Dolph C Volker helps at a cheetah reserve sometimes; in one video he allowed a friendly cheetah to lick him until his skin was scraped bloody. (It didn't try to eat him.)

Honestly, Richardson was totally right about making one wrong move and you end up as a hot lunch buffet. Treadwell ignored warnings, acted irresponsibly and recklessly put not only himself, but also his fiance into dangerous situations where they had absolutely no justifiable reasson to be there. She didn't even LIKE bears. Raeen pegged it perfectly, people like that invite their own deaths. Treadwell gambled with not only his life, but hers as well. And he lost. Raeen doesn't have any love in his heart for animals. He has no sympathy. Therefore he will never overcome his fears. Those things amaze me and I am already aware of them. It is an interesting perspective, and people need to hear and understand the perspective of people in parts of the world they do not know about. We Americans take so much for granted, and very few of us really know what hard work is. I have worked with stone and metal, sculpting by hand, and I have gained an extreme respect for the artisans who do it without power tools. Some of the temples and shrines in India are mind boggling, carved from a single piece of stone, an entire mountain that is made into a massive and very fine and detailed structure. With no power tools. All by hand, and without mistakes or broken parts. Just astounding.
    Knowledge plus perspective = wisdom.

He doesn't live with them in the forrest he raised and nurtured a relationship with them for many years on his sanctuary for them. They aren't in the wild.

the problem with guys like this is that people see him 'playing' with these lions and think they can do the same. Quite a few foreign tourists have lost their lives by getting out of their cars.

I’m sure I’ve seen Kevin say before that the hyenas have put him in hospital 3 times, but the lions, never.

He also does not encourage others to go out and try this, wild animals should be exactly that: wild. Yes, these animals have had human contact, but he tries to make sure they do not depend on him, that they remain wild and that he treats them with the respect of a wild animal and not a pet.

as tribal people they must be a lot more scared of lions as they really do pose a threat to them and probably do encounter them in real life. so it must be really mind blowing for them to see them being loving

great that he brings animals and people together but yes be carefull and know what to do,that moment where the lion got bit more serious with him i kind of saw that coming he pushed it awy a fuw times and i saw the mood on the face of the lion shift a little he went from nice to dude dont do that and he bit him just a tiny bit serious to tell the man i dont like that
these lions are just so strong and there claws so sharp that them telling you of a little to hard can hospitlize you or kill you.
