    Mick! You have a great channel on blasting! I love seeing this trade in action, and having some blasting experience myself, I know what it is. And I would say, no worries on mill scale, that stuff is so stable, that making it rough is enough, at least that was my experience. But anyway, I wish you fun on your projects and equipment that works! 👍

    Are there nozles that have a rectangular tip? Like a preassure washer, you can adjust the width of the water jet to cover a larger area.
    I noticed that there isn't any rust in the areas that have mill scale. Does the mill scale form a sort of protective layer on the steel?

    • @Mobileblaster
      @Mobileblaster  11 днів тому +4

      I believe milscale is the best type of protection on steel its miss understud because people paint over its shiny smooth serface and that's the reason for coatings to fail and people blame the milscale its like any serface paint needs to adear to. It's to have a key for it to bond properly blasting offers this key perfectly. You can get fan nozzles but they ovel out the hotspot so you lose the heat only really any good if the surface is jumping off so fast and the operator cannot keep up but to combat this you can turn the media down losing a bit of speed but saving media or do what I would and stand off more opening up the hotspot making a wider spread similar to a fan nozzle. It's hard because the hotspot is the main area the magic is happening and then you have a splash area well what I call splash this is the softer hitting bounce around media you can use this splash to good advantage on some jobs. When you see me doing lines I'm overlapping the same area 3x soft (splash) then the hotspot then the tail end of the splash I could speed up 2x and the finish look similar but doing it this way I know I've keyed the serface I hate having to go back over any work it's best to do it right 1st time and take a little longer just to be sure 😊

    Well, every time I watch something like this, I think of the fact that sea-going ships are made of marine-grade stainless steel. The makers have obviously got the welding of this material sussed and the supply of the steel is obviously also sussed, as is how to make complex hull shapes with it. So, all this begs the question of why nobody seems to use it on narrowboats. Yes, the material would be a bit more expensive (less so if recycled steel), but it would make for a narrowboat that would be much less inclined to rust than a mild steel hull. Effort could then be put into making the epoxy two-pack paint last longer.

      Yeah well it was ex sea boat that was turned into a party boat for the canals it was in bad shape I had the keel and then they cut it open and I had to blast the cesspit (it was power washed clean before I got in 😂)

    • @Mobileblaster
      @Mobileblaster  11 днів тому +1

      It's recommended 2 to 3 year for blacking 4 to 6 on epoxy the paint company say it will last 15 year I believe the boat yard offer a long warranty but not as confident as the paint manufacturer 😂

  • @DEmma1972

    I was watching a video from nogun wales who is a steel fabricator and even builds his own narrow boats. He was talking about mill scale and said on the video that it needs to be removed or the paint wont adhere properly, he went on to say that you can let it rust which gets rid of the mill scale and then remove the rust. I googled mill scale and it does indeed need to be removed or it will rust behind the mill scale. Boats should not leave the boat yard with the mill scale but it seems a quick slap of paint hides the problem and then its someone elses problem a few years down the line.

    • @Mobileblaster
      @Mobileblaster  11 днів тому +3

      I know what Google says about it but I've been around milscale along time there is a lot of different grades to milscale some jumps off with a blast like today's job video will be up soon 😏(if its like this then I would say rubbing againt another boat will affact the coating and needs removing) and other jobs seams pointless removing. It's very similar to galvanising but forms naturally when the steel is stretched into sheets. If a blaster cannot easily remove it then nothing in the canal will. People make the mistake of painting the "fresh steel(new with milscale)" and not properly keying the surface if milscale is keyed properly then coating will adear properly and last as long as it would if it was removed. Paint manufacturers recommend that lose and flaky paint oils and rust be removed the data sheet only mentions the surface should be keyed deeper look into data sheets will say a mesh grade for the peak and vallys usually 20/40 SA2 I deliver a minimum of 40/60 SA2.5 in places SA3 40/60
      It's a little like the anode situation we know what Google says about them we understand the logic but after 2 300 boats I'm still not 100% that they work I've seen alot of boats in very bad shape with them also with also decent boats without only way of really knowing is knowing the full history of the boat and its service history. You will be shocked with results of maybe 3 videos ahead today's job is quite an old boat but it's been serviced every year(blacked not 2 pack) and I've possibly blasted it before (not that I can remember it) it's near perfect condition with hardly any anodes 😳

      @@Mobileblaster Awesome reply. Thank you for taking the time to write it. Yeah I think your blasting is good with regards to preparing for paint. I only mentioned it because it seems every video you point out that boat builders leave it on. I wrote the message halfway through your video before I saw that you then explained in more detail regarding the blasting effect on it. With regards to anodes, it will make a difference depending on if they are on a hook up with a galvanic isolator or if the wiring is a little dodgy or even if its on a normal canal or river with salt water etc. I have read that 1 anode is good for about 8 ft of hull and most bosts have only 4 or 6 anodes which isnt enough. Some people have also been fitting them on the base plate which seems to becoming more popular each year. I do love seeing a crudy hull get brought back to almost new when you blast it. As a final comment, you could add a voice over instead of chatting (auto subtitles are funny though) instead of investing in other noise cancelling mics. Keep up the great work on the boats cos I really enjoy them (as you know).

    How long did it take to drain the dry dock and were there any fishies flapping in the bottom 🤔..... As for milscale if its not a good protection why does it play havoc with the welding if not cleaned properly

    • @Mobileblaster
      @Mobileblaster  11 днів тому +1

      It takes around an hour I would say to drain and I spotted a few but they must have made peace in the pump as the isn't any on the floor when I'm in their. Milscale is like a natural steel coating bit like galvanising but different offering protection to the steel if galv is keyed properly and the appropriate primer that won't affect the coating just like Milscale my opinion if a blaster cannot easily remove it nothing in the canal will harm it so long as ots keyed nice it won't affect the coating protection 👍
