Usually, videos about electrics tend to be complicated, but this video was easy to understand. Great job!
6 years and in my opinion, the best explanation i have found. Nice
Thank you Sir, glad it helped!
Thanks Del, I am that bloke who has one in the toolbox drawer & not a clue how to use it. But now I know!! Keep em coming 👍🏼
Thanks mate, glad it helped you out...
Thanks much for clear explanation and visual on how to work a multimeter.I'm old but not too old to learn. Thanks for taking time and efforts an our/my behalf.Old geezer in Seattle.
At last. A simple to understand, straightforward explanation. Subscribed.
Thank you. Welcome aboard!
Excellent little tutorial, REALLY plain and simply explained. Thank you
A must for every tool box. Helped me find a missing voltage in a loom. Great vid Del clear and concise.
Cheers Edward, basic stuff, but its a handy tool to have aye.
This has to be the best vid you have done without spanners, ranting or grinding! Thank you so much for your little insight into the dark art of electrics!
Thanks buddy... 'little insight' indeed... just the very basic outlive and a couple of easy checks, hoping to instill a little confidence in checking things... thanks for watching.. Del.
Explained clear and with no bollocks, Cheers mate.
The ohms difference you saw (.03 to .04) when you measured your first glass fuse was through your hands and body. It's helpful to be aware that if your hands are touching both leads, you're reading parallel resistance through your body.
Testing "electric string" is one of the Motorcycling jobs I hate the most, but as you said, it joins all the fun parts together, so it is a necessary evil. Thanks for the video Del, as always beautifully explained. Cheers and ride safe.
Thanks Roy, always good to hear form you buddy.
had one for years clueless how to work you made that easy been practicing since watching video thank you for the video been very helpful for motorhome
Most welcome mate..Glad to help!
very good explanation, .....and that's coming from a local#3 electrician!.
and you are right, Del. I had to take a 5 year apprentice program, to become an expert, like I am today!!
thanks...penny and DEl. Always success!!.
I just had to replace the starter relay, post down under the belly of the beast!! had to remove, oil tank, battery, rear wheel and splash guard, just to access the post and neg terminal post(plastic) ,on my 2005 15th anniversary Fatboy! thanks again.
PS...great camera work, as usual ....P.P 😁
Thanks Delboy , I,ve always wanted to learn how to use a Multimeter properly , now i know . Thankyou .
This was great. Simply explained, I was always unsure how to use one of these. Your channel is always the go to place for me before I have a crack at something on the bike. Thank you
Glad to help mate, most welcome. !
Great stuff Del - just watched the simple skills relay one as well. Some stuff I knew already and a few revelations that will help me in future. Thanks for adding positivity and mate-ship to the community. I know the community is awesome already, but your attitude and ability to impart and share your own knowledge is a great example of why that is.
My bike recently out-grew its warranty period, meaning I don't have to have Honda service is as a warranty condition, so I got the workshop manual, a decent torque-wrench and have just done the 48000Km major service, saving myself a fortune and learning a lot too!
Very helpful, will store it away both mentally and in my playlist.
All the very best and ride safe :)
Hey buddy... good to hear from you, and i think like you that the biker community has a certain sense of family about it... i dont think i would be as motivated to send out the message and reach out to my fellow man if it was the car community.. also cars are too fragmented into different genres and groups.. bikers are one family and we all need to stick together... last statistic i read, we were just 1% of road users..! pretty tight group hah... take care buddy.. all the best. Del.
Everyone needs a multimeter, essential kit. Came in very handy when my old battery was on the way out and helped me decide to get a new one.
Good video as always Mr Del, these things don't have to be unapproachable and you've shown how to use it very well.
Thanks buddy... just the basics, but once you open the door of understanding to these things, the rest come easier..!
Fantastic little mountain of experience, thank you.
Wish I’d had a schoolteacher like you 60 years ago, concise , articulate and knowledgeable. Cheers mate.
Wow, thanks Michael, really appreciate the kind sentiment mate. !
Very clearly and simply explained. Thanks for videos.
Thank you, for making it easy to understand how to read a Multimeter. GREAT JOB. !!!
Brilliant these simple skill videos are fantastic.
Cheers
Another great video Del like the way you explain things and put things into layman's terms
I only watch your videos.
You have a tremendous way of putting things across in an interesting and informative manner.
Terrific 😊
Thank you Tim!
Thanks dude..your channel is full of infonuggets for the basic biking brotherhood which often neglected by others and very useful for a successfull biking culture ...God bless and keep making more videos buddy
Thanks buddy, appreciate your kind words, happy to help
Just found this, and its the best guide to using a multimeter i have come across, other video's have been to complicated to follow, glad i have found and subscribed
Glad it helped, welcome aboard mate.
Very simply explained far better than some other videos.
Lol ive had a multi meter for years, never known how it works...... now i just want to test every thing ....thanks top man...
Been watching your channel for a while now, excellent stuff, all in layman's terms, I've been fixing bikes for the majority of my 44 yrs and Ive learned a good few tips, keep up the good work, Q&A's make me chuckle!!CheersChris
Cheers Chris, we do have a lot of fun making the videos!
‘...and looking cool’ 😄
Nice videos, keep em coming! 👍🏻
Just ordered a multimeter after watching this vid. There is still a wiff of magic to electricity for me but this give me the push to get involved, cheers
Didn't really understand continuity before. Now do. Thanks Del
Yeah, its more obvious and literal than we think... the current must "continue" along the lead and not "resist", so the reading for "resistance" must be zero, they you have perfect "continuity"..! aint hard once you think methodically aye.!
You would have made a brilliant school teacher!!
SuperPramFace187 he's MY teacher.
Thank you most kindly Sirs, what a cool job that would be..!
Moonfleet41 WOULD be??? You've already got it!
I know, right.....I always tell him, he missed his calling.
would have love to have him as my 9th grade auto teacher!! I'd. own my own garage ,by now!!!
Mate , you made that so easy to understand .thanks mate
Brilliant . Easy to understand. Thanks.
Cheers Delboy. Great tutorial for the beginner. 👍🏻🍷🏴
nice and clear explanation...will be buying one asap and poking around my Tiger !! Thank you...
A great explanation, I've had a multi meter for a year or so by now. But I know much more about using it than I ever did before. 👍
This is good stuff. Hardly anyone is going to build a banging bike but most people can do a bit of good with a multimeter and a bit of guidance
nice one,del.clear and concise.i learnt something .
finally I understand what it looks so complicated...thanks
That's a brill bit of info Dell, I've had a multimeter ,same as yours for years but have never really understood it, Now thanks yo your dimple vids, it's made it all clear, now I'll know what I'm looking for, when I check Batts: and fuses, Brilliant ,thanks Dell ,George.
Here we go again. Best basic multimeter tutorial that I have seen yet. Other guys fumble around testing bike stuff that a novice can't understand or see. Thanks Del!
Thanks Jeff... just a couple of simple tests, and a walk round the controls.. glad you enjoyed it buddy, and thanks for your kind comments.. Del.
top notch, multi meter for dummies. im trying to use it to diagnose why my bike wont start. i changed the engine, now i dont even get any dash lights?? let the fun begin
. good video man i appreciate it.
A nation shows its gratitude. Arise, Sir Delboy.
Brilliant mate.
Thank you so much, that was the best demonstration I’ve seen on this subject
You're very welcome David!
Recently found your channel.. Short and sharp skills for someone with tools but learning about bikes
Welcome aboard Paul, thanks for your support.
thank you so much, I brought a multimeter this morning, now I can have a go a check out my own battery to see what's the problems , sense owning a motorbike I've learned so much info. thanks to yourself,
You're welcome Mark, glad the videos help you, and we appreciate you supporting what we do!
i have had my multimeter for a long time and know i no how to use it .thank you very much
Most welcome William. Glad I could help!
Thanks , another easy to watch and take onboard video !
Another function of the Multi-Meter that is extremely useful is the continuity checker (also know as a diode check). I know you can check continuity with the other modes but there is one built-in for this task. The symbol is the sideways triangle with the line on it. On most MM's it will "beep" if the leads are touching together when set to this mode. This is a very useful way to check for a short (a wire grounding against something it's not supposed to), or that a wire isn't broken along its length. When you hear a beep you know that the 9Vdc battery inside the Multi-Meter has a path from the positive wire to the negative (you can just touch the leads together to test it). I beep test stuff as a quick way to verify a circuit before I crack into using the Volt or Ohm meter.
Great video as always, clear and concise. The image quality of the video looks wonderful. Cheers!
Mike & Melly
Hey Mike.. yeah. there is about another half hour of video there if i were to go over all of it.. but this was just the basic, first two main tasks you'll need... Thanks for your input buddy.. take care of The Chairman.. D&P.
LOL, yep. With electronics it can quickly go down the rabbit hole and no longer be a simple skill. ;-) Was a great video with just enough info!
@@Moonfleet41 I just bought one and just getting the thing out t test my battery.. some meters are ok for electricians but not for the beginner when looking at the dial some read complicated
always wondered how they worked tks .brilliant job on the tailight so far
cheers del you are a good teacher i have had a new multimeter in its box for about 6 months i can now get it out and give it a go thank you deano
thanks for your clarity in this video...
Great refresher on the basics.
Great illustration. Knowing what is said in the video is all we need to know ( motorcycle battery check).
Again thanks for all your hard work it is appreciated
My pleasure!
Brilliant basics!!
Very useful I've seen glass fuses that have broken inside the metal end cap and looked good but we're defective
Couldn't have put it better myself. Great stuff Del.
Cheers Tony.
Nice one Del, well explained... I always use the water comparison too, to explain voltage, current, power and resistance.
One very key point is that if you ever use the Amp setting (with the red lead in the Amp/current socket), then you MUST put the lead back into the voltage socket when you're finished, because the current setting is basically short circuit, meaning if you use the meter thinking you're checking voltage afterwards, then you will short the battery out through the wiring, blowing fuses, and also destroying your multimeter.
They are also extremely handy for telling if your alternator is working on your bike or car... If anyone is interested in how to check for this, then I'm happy to advise on here.
Thanks Martin, great insight buddy... and thanks for pitching in... Good to see you ta the big event.. didnt we all have a great time.. take care fella.. Del.
No problem Del. Always glad to help...especially on a subject I know rather a lot about 😊
I really loved the weekend, relaxed, fun and met some great new friends... If I'm honest, I didn't want it to end!
Take care and speak soon.
Thank you very much, great explanation. keep up the great work.
Perfectly explained brother.. Thx
I showed you the picture of the bike a few days ago. No spark no fuel prime. All common checks done. New ecu and programmed keys. Still no luck. Thought to my self I'll buy a multi meter. Then realised I hadn't a clue on how to use one. Then thought. Ah. I reckon delboys done a video. And sure enough...boom. you pair make owning a bike only as expensive as you want it to be. Keep up the great work.
Blimey, thanks mate, I'm no specialist, or even that proficient on electrics, it's a dark art of wizardry that's for sure, but the basics are easy enough, so we thought we'd share a little of our understanding ! Hope you got it all sorted mate...
@@Moonfleet41 me to. I hate not having a working bike lol
Good stuff del , that affirmed what i thought but never really knew. Cheers
It's good the video shows one doesn't have to have a really expensive professional meter to do the sort of checks you will do as a home mechanic, but, for the people who don't already have one, may I suggest spending a couple of Pounds more for one which has an audible continuity check function. You should still expect to pay less than 30 Pounds and, as a bonus, some of those meters come with a temperature range and probe as well, which is very useful at times.
Anyway, audible continuity check function, you won't regret it.
I've worked in electronics for most of my career thus far as well and I agree with you. This sort of multimeter is not fit for purpose in electronics or professional applications. However, for basic troubleshooting on bikes, cars and around the home, they're perfectly adequate. Just that, like I said, I consider an audible continuity check a must/luxury one should afford oneself.
Agreed, I'm no electrician but the audible continuity check is a great feature. Much easier than reading the resistance off the screen, especially if you're working ion something in an awkward place.
Another easy to follow simple skills vid. Love these.
Good comparison to a Doctors thermometer. We`ll have to rename this Dr. Del`s Garage. lol
Ha ha, searching for an analogy that explains its only data that you'll get, not answers.. those you have to work out for yourself...
Nice video. Going to be teaching a few ladies just that in a couple of weeks.
Just come across you and absolutely brilliant for a newby many thanks 👍
Thanks You're most Welcome!
You are a comedy genius love! I love to watch your FRO blogs, and true, there are not enough of us female riders!! i passed my test (DAS) TEN years ago,and have my second bike, CB400 BabyBlade.., but now looking for my third... .ive just done the brake fluid on him recently too, after watching you doing the Triumph brakes, and saved me £50!! ...broke a feckin nail!!! just so ya know :)
Ayup Tracy, good to hear from you hun, thanks for getting in touch, and great bike with the baby blade...hardcore scratch bike and no mistakin' lol.. Glad the video could help you save some money, and you learned some skills to... (sorry about the nail though). Take care, and keep in touch.. Del.
I'll try my best! ! Hope Penny doesn't mind the kisses, they're for her too! Got a charity ride on November 20th for the North West Air ambulance too so hoping that the bikes ready as having fun finding a fuel pump. ..grrrrr xx love to the family and ride safe xx
Great video mate, keep the simple skills coming. They have helped me shed loads of times, thumbs up mate..
Thanks Colin. glad we can help you mate.
Thanks for the lesson and clarification! Great video and information. Well explained. Pura vida
Our pleasure Jesus, glad it helped!
Hi luv ur video. Looked at a bunch, had a hard time since I've never even used a screwdriver. Understood yours 100% first time watching. (As a lot have said you are a great teacher if you ever consider that career path.) Newly single in mid-life, trying to diy a fixer upper house. This video helped immensely. Anyway thank you for your hard work!!
Thanks for your kind feedback Tammy, im glad the video could help you out, and good luck with your project.
Cool! Been able to check the fuses borrowed from old appliance plugs to see if they actually work. Threw away 4 as a result. Top vid
ha ha, i use mine for that all the time, thise white ones you cant see through... what are we supposed to use... the Force..? lol
just found this, looked at loads for me car thanks, the info i wanted straight to the point idiot proof, the right amount of info needed to keep it real 👍👍👍
Hi
I've never used a multimeter before due to not knowing how to use it
You have made that as simple as could be
Thank you
Topman
Roy
Thank you Del Boy well done. very clear n easy to understandable
You are very welcome
@@Moonfleet41 pleasure. thank you
Very helpful. Thanks.
A very old video......It just showed a 70yo how to test his boat batteries. Thank you very much.
Very informative mate....thankyou
Great video ! Thank you
As usual, brilliant, informative and interesting. Fab 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
hi del ive been watching you for the past few days ,and you have to be the greatest teacher that ive ever listened to I have learned more from you than anyone else totally brilliant,,,,,,,,,,,sam
thank you, great video. easy to understand.
Nice one Del I did learn to use one at school a couple of years ago. Cheers
Cheers Del for that, I have one just like yours, now I understand it a bit better 👍
Nice "basics only" video, but I think there is one pretty important basic thing to know about multimeters that was not covered: don't EVER try to measure current "directly". That is switch the meter to measure amps and connect it directly to a current source like a car/bike battery or even worse - the mains. You WILL blow the fuse in the meter, or if the meter doesn't have one (some of the cheap ones don't) blow the meter itself and possibly your hand with it.
All the amps ranges in all the meters (except clamp meters, but that's a different story) are about measuring current flowing in a circuit. So if you connect the meter set to measure amps directly across a battery, that's essentially a dead short. That's why the amps measurement usually has it's own separate input jack - so that you don't blow your meter accidently while switching through the different ranges.
thanks Del for the video and for the clarity. I really enjoyed your illustrations too.
Hi James, good to hear form you my friend, glad you enjoyed it.. Del.
Brilliant explanation.
This guy is GREAT. Boils down the info, gives me hope!
Thank you so much
For showing how to use it
Brilliant mate, thank you for making this video!!
Ive always admired your teaching skills. Your ability to explain things in phenomenal!!
Thanks Mike, you are very kind !
Thanks, great help! 👍
Hiya Dell just started watching your videos spot on can not thank you enough. Its people like yourself really help us guys with little knowledge and gives us confidence to tackle the jobs we thought were way above our capabilities. Thank you very much.
Thanks buddy, you;re very kind... i think you hit the nail on the head its all about the confidence, you have the skills in there otherwise you wouldn't be able to do it even if you wanted to.. its just the confidence in yourself to get stuck in and have a go....how hard can it be aye..lol Thanks for watching buddy, and enjoy your bike. Del.
Good tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful!
Thanks . Very informative.
Very helpful... Thanks
Thanks Del very helpful.
Hey Dell, whazuuurp.? Re: 7" LED Projection HEADLIGHT Anyway just wanted to thank you again for the the very useful info you supplied on this vid: I'm a bit dyslexic when it comes to understanding the schematics and connectivity of things, anyways today your tuition proved very useful, i.e.: as I've mentioned before I have a 2013 Harley Softail Slim, I've done loads of mods on it over the last 18 months and your vids: have helped me a lot, but yesterday my BLACK SMOKED LED PROJECTION HEADLIGHT arrived from America, Made by EAGLE LIGHTS an American company who make lights for the automotive industry including Harley and Jeep, it's the same type Evo 8700 there currently fitting to Harleys called the "DAYMAKER"costing well over £600
I paid £88 including shipping,VAT, and duties , shipped through the global shipping network , I was excited! Anyways I put my bike into maintenance mode ,they say you should remove the main fuse but I never have When tinkering, or adding a mod, so far I've got away with not removing it, anyway I carefully removed my headlight rims and disconnected , good idea to have a magnetic dish for the screws, there fiddly but if your careful you won't drop one, I always take out the top screw last so I can hold the rim and sealed unit at the bottom with one hand while I unscrew it, otherwise it could disconnect and drop out.
On the original 7" headlight there's the main H4 connector in the centre and 2 small single wire connectors for side lights at the bottom, the new headlight don't use these 2 small wires as everything runs off the H4 lead, anyway the new headlight has an H4 connector so I just plugged it in and then just tucked the other 2 small connectors inside the shell and then refitted the shrouds, looked well nice and goes with my smoked indicators, anyways turned on the ignition switch and the light came on wonderful? But then I turned the handlebars slightly and suddenly the light went out, DAMN, Tried to start the bike and everything dead, FXXK. .? What have I done? Sxxxte it's starting to rain and my bikes in a bikebarn pull over cover so I'm working outside, so I quickly removed the new headlight and put the old one back in, Hey Presto everything worked as before, pixxxsing down with rain for rest of day so I slept on it, obviously It was playing on my mind throughout the night, then it came to me!!! I wonder if those 2 small single connectors had touched the headlight casing?? Mmmmm??
Anyway today I looked at the workshop manual TROUBLESHOOTING, it said to check fuses, something I've never done before, anyway Sussed out how to take the fuse holder apart and removed the 2 x 15amp fuses ,fortunately there were 2 spares in the holder replaced the old ones with new and put the it back together, Then I started over, but this time I looked at the 2 small single connectors and even thought they've got rubber shrouds over the pushon connections there is a minute part of the metal showing out the end of the rubber shroud, So I taped them up and reinstalled the new headlight, HEY PRESTO! All working just fine tried switching the ignition on and off several times and it's still working, so I can only assume the 2 single connectors had shorted out on the inside of the headlight shell, ANYWAYS I'm well chuffed and it looks nice, SO??!! As I had swapped out the fusses I thought of your Vid: and thought I'd put it to the test I'll check to see which of the 2 fuses I'd replaced was blown , got me iPad and went to UA-cam WATCH KATER VIDS: found yours and refreshed my thick skull with how to check the fuses, I've got the same meter as you and have had it for umpteen years and it's been kicked/ dropped / pushed around as it's just something I just could not get my head round as to how it worked, OK so I KNew how to check batteries but not how to check fuses, So I had your vid running and copied your actions, when I switched it to 200 ohms like you say it showed 1 as you say, then I touched the 2contacts together it read 1.7 then I checked the fuses and they both checked out OK DOH! so I can only assume that I need a new Multimeter as like you say the leads are probably knackered with all the kicking around etc, Fortunately there still selling them through a UK seller on EBay for a fiver so I've ordered one, when it arrives I'll check again and update this thread with my findings, anyways I hope this helps anyone who who may have similar probs: when fitting this type of headlight unit because from what I've been reading on the US Harley Forums quite a few people have had similar probs, but haven't sussed it and sent the unit back for replacement, something that I nearly done, and as it comes from the States can prove quite costly, Cheers George Wheeler in Oxford.
