  • We are back with another install video for you all! Today, we have Steven L's Silverado. For this install, we head over to the garage at Central Sight and Sound in Farmingdale, New York. The customer had UBL Hideaways installed in the tail lights and front fog lights. In the grille, 2 ilumex surface mounts and 2 UBL G3 surface mounts. The guys wired all these lights to a Feniex 4200 Mini Controller.

I would be absolutely ashamed of myself posting this video. Soldering with a lighter and using electrical tape instead of heat shrink, drilling hideaways with no thought on using the reflector focal point, running an 8 ga power wire to power an 18ga wire on the input, non heat shrink rings on the battery, no disconnect for the grill, and EPOXYING The lights in the grill!?!? and all of that doesn’t even get into the fact that it’s illegal in NY to run red/blue to the front for anyone but Federal Govt. this is why you don’t take lighting jobs to a car audio shop.

Daniel..... I agree everything they did is certainly not perfect. we all have room for improvement & maybe some better techniques. But it looks to me as if they are soldering with a torch, not a lighter, I have been in the industry since the early 90's and this is a very common practice. Heat shrink VS electrical tape debate will be discussed until the end of time. Some people preferer one over the other....What is wrong with running a THICKER power wire to something that may need more power down the line when they decide to add other accessories to that circuit??
Given that we dont know who actually owns this truck....who are we to say what is legal or not??? At the end of the day you get what you pay for, IF you want the job to be 100% up to military specifications then this job would take months and cost Thousands of dollars more than what they probably charged....I just dont see why uniformed driveway installers with harbor freight tools feel it is necessary to bash this install months after it was posted....

@@bentaylor1456 lmfao driveway installers with HFT tools. I have a legitimate upfitting business been around since 2016 and doing this since 2012 so nice try. And soldering with a torch is a terrible way of doing it especially using primary wire which burns easily. And who’s to say what’s legal? Uhm ny state law dude. And I’ll tell you from experience electrical tape will never be a better seal than adhesive lined hs. There’s a reason vehicle manufacturers use hs instead of electrical tape. But you do you.

Daniel is 1000% right. I surprised he didn't mention the trash LED lights that were used for this "install". No hate on the Feniex mini controller but the knock off copy cat UBL LED's make this whole install a giant waste of time. The truck owner should have just gone to amazon and done the cigarette lights every other cheap LEO buys...

It doesn’t matter what tools are being used. Not all pros in all trades use expensive tools. Everyone has their own techniques and if the customer is happy it’s up to them. This is an automotive lighting install, not a nasa spaceship install. I don’t wire things this way but that’s what they do. They def need to use adhesive heat shrink for sure. Get off your high horse

@@TheTexasVet what if it’s what the customer could afford? You gonna buy some quality ones for the install?

Unprofessional. Garage quality installation. From drilling, deburring to cleaning up the scrap.
I would never install using your practices.

Awful install methods... twisting the wires reduces electrical connection, even soldering doesnt allow solder to penetrate the twisted wires.

For the grill Lights, they could have used painted black aluminum angle stock so that way easier to change out or move to a new vehicle at a later point. Plus it would give you an additional ground point to limit LED RFI.

I like the cable management, however I used 4pin connectors on my setup to unplug if I needed to remove any lights plus I installed a cable boot beside the steering column so I didn't have to poke a hole in the factory weather boots. I also use non insulated butt connectors with shrink wrap, no electrical tape at all. I like the idea of epoxying the lights to the grill. I always used brackets I either made or bought. Good overall setup.
