Tim Chantarangsu & Charlamagne Tha God Try Fertilized Duck Egg || Acquired Taste

  • On this week’s episode of “Acquired Taste,” Tim Chantarangsu and special guest Charlamagne Tha God head to Filipino restaurant Jeepney to take on one of the most intimidating foods either of them have ever tried. It’s called balut, and it’s essentially a fertilized duck egg that you eat right out of the egg shell. It might sound unusual to the American palate, but this Filipino street food is a widely beloved staple in the culture. Watch as acclaimed Filipino chef Nicole Ponseca guides them on this culinary journey to the Philippines and find out what Tim and Charlamagne think about this unique delicacy.

Tim Chantarangsu and a variety of celebrity guests explore the cultural significance of iconic foods from around the world and demystify any preconceived notions by tasting them together for the first time.
Tim Chantarangsu (nee DeLaGhetto, 1.5M Instagram followers) is no stranger to exotic food. He has a theory - if he eats the parts of animals most people don’t, it will make him more powerful. In this Thrillist show, Tim interviews a squeamish guest as they try dishes most people avoid at all costs and power up. Tim carefully pairs each dish to his guest: crickets because they feed them to their pet snake, or chicken feet because of all the times they chickened out on crazy adventures. From live octopus at Flushing’s Sik Gaek to silkworm at LA’s Jitlada, Tim will deliver an interview rarer than the food that’s crawling on the table. Together, they learn about how the dish came about, why it’s culturally important, and try it for themselves.

She was right on all the influences except Mexico. We never had mexican influences. Also, the origins of Balut go waaay back. Balut is a late night snack, sold by balut vendors on a basket with a steamed cloth to keep the balut warm, and very popular with people who are hungry after a night of drinking. You will never see a balut vendor during the day. Filipinos also consider balut as an aphrodisiac. Because it looks disgusting, people tend to eat it in the dark or when they are drunk. It is also served as a 9 day old balut and a 13 day old balut. The difference is that the 9 day old look more like a fertilized hard boiled egg with meat while the 13 day is what nicole explained. The 9 day old balut is usually for first timers. The balut you get overseas (USA,Canada, etc.) are premade. So they are boiled, frozen, and then shipped. The balut in the Philippines is so much more flavorful and delicious because it is fresh.

Bruddah J You also need to do your history. There are no "different" types of spanish influence. There is only one Spanish influence which the country Spain brought with them including Christianity when they colonized all these countries (Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines, etc.). You got the meaning of Culture and Influence mixed up sir.

Loved this video and challenging our views of what we eat. Each culture has something unique that we enjoy but seems weird to others. This video pushes me to be more open minded 🙌🏿

Additional nuance to balut eating is: 1.) balut is sold at night because its not “visually” inviting. 2.) probably more important-the spicy vinegar situation is never represented in any of the western balut eating thing i’ve seen so far. We would purposely seek out or wait for our choice balut vendors based on their spicy vinegar alone.
