I'm on my third mk3, just love them because they're so unloved. You nailed the issues. Only other one that drives me mad is headlight beam adjusters - aaargh! Thanks for helping keep them on the road.
Nice me too. 1st vw I owned was a mk3 gti, then 2 estates in-between other vws. Yeah relatively easy to fix, i can't say I've had the beam adjuster issue YET. No worries, they'll eventually get the love they deserve
perfect video for a new mk3 owner. you covered absolutely everything. I'm on my second gold and literally everything you mentioned was wrong with it hahah thanks for making it.
my mk3 had a lot of these faults too and my sunroof leaked and i didn't know where the exit was so your vid helped and i blew some air up that and now is cleared and does piss all in my car thanks for the vid keep up the mk3 vids
Great video mate, I’m going to look at a mk3 golf estate in about half an hour so this video was very useful to know what to look for although I have a feeling it’s going to be a rusty pile😅
I picked up a little 2000 Cabrio 2.0 automatic. 158k. Motor just sounds slightly squeaky when cold, then it is fine. Rust is not an issue here. My MK2 GTI had a sagging headliner. Where do you find the glovebox piece? Mine did just break.
Oh nice, is the squeak from the belt? Does the squeal increase when you rev the engine? I bought on ebay, £15 for a small plastic trim. Might he better to buy a new glove box
Project 7 its just the little latch on the glovebox with a lock. Looks like Amazon has replacement ones for $28. Hopefully correct one. Being a R hand drive, I think it is different. The squeak goes away after it is warmed up. No squeaky belts, but I wonder if ones makes that sounds then stops? There is also this sounds from the back, I figured wheel bearing. Because it is constant woosh woosh woosh. A mechanic said it seemed fine. Slight clunk over speed bumps or rough pavement in back, too. It needs shocks/struts. Not sure I really want to pay a shop, might seek a garage mechanic. Considering Bilstein or KYB. Nothing to harsh. Likely springs too. Researching options. I like it. It needs small things as far as I can tell. We do not have many options in the USA for small modern but classic convertibles here. I did not want any kind of Beetle. All the earlier MK1 models I saw were totally overpriced and or needing a ton of work. I discovered These are likely better cars.
@@djkenny1202 oh the latch cost me about £10 on ebay. Possibly a belt, mine has a squeal too. Rear clunk might be top mounts, of you jack the rear up and rock the wheel up and down you might find some play. Definitely worth doing yourself, a quick youtube guide will let you do it without paying labour at a garage, rear suspension is released but loosening 2 bolts so very straight forward to do. Mk3s are best of both worlds, not too expensive but still old enough, hope you get on well with it
I want to but with 100000km petrol 1.8 litre automatic hatch back. It looks very clean. I am just scared it’s not economic and reliable. I am a student I need to get some reliable 😢 what’s your take on this thanks 🙏
Thats low mileage! Works out to around 62,000 miles. Its not so much about the mileage though, you need to check the history of the car see if its been maintained, see how it drives, use this guide to check around the car. The 2.0 8v is a very good engine and economical (if driven sensibly) If your budget is 1000 I wouldn't buy a car for 1000, you want to leave yourself some spare money for maintenance
I have one CLI with 1H engine, but it is not roadworthy. She need lots if repair. I parked it in the front yard just to look at it when Im going out😘😘 luv it.
Hi I'm going to view a few mk3 golf's being gti and vr6, one is a mk3 gti with a vr6 conversion is there anything I should really be looking out for ? Thanks
yes use this video on places to look but check everything: check wiring isnt a mess check for oil and coolant leaks under boot carpets, underneath the car, engine bay. make sure everything works make sure it drives ok mk3s can have an issue not being able to rev over 5000rpm that will indicate a fault. all the best dude and take your time with it
