Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 on a Compaq Deskpro EN

- Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 is a slimmed-down and slightly facelifted version of Windows XP with support from Microsoft until April 2019. It does everything XP can do, and runs well on older computers, like this Compaq Deskpro EN with a 1 GHz Pentium III.
Registered to Steve Jobs...
Someone is a joker...
+ProtoMario I noticed that and couldn't stop laughing! xD
+ProtoMario That's fake, and you know why? Steve Jobs hated PC's :)
***** I know. I was just joking :)
+MegaBojan1993 LMAO nobody gives as fk sad face
+experienceRCOS - Computers and Technology What, are you going to take this video down as well?
"Registered to:
Steve Jobs
Apple Computer, Inc."
:D
+Christian S he does it to all of his installs of windows.
Ye haha
Ye haha
Thanks for sharing this. I have no use for XP right now but it's good to know there's a functioning version out there if needed. :)
Mac G.: they will let customers buy it until 2024, but support will end in 2019. So after 2019 you can still license POSReady 2009 from Microsoft, but they won't provide any support for it.
I got this and installed it on a Dell optiplex 755 and it has all drivers except the ethernet drivers and i can get it to install.
I would like to ask if there is any way you can change interface language or is it just in english?
vwestlife will microsft office 2003 work on it still
tech OS
Yes.
MyPartyFusion you need the DVD version of POSReady (it contains MUI packs) to change the language.
POSReady? They say it means "point of service" but looking at that computer... we all know what it really means.. :-)
They actually forgot two letters. Its supposed to say pos already.
Now POSReady 2009 is dead. R.I.P Windows XP
nope , it'll still work, its just theres no updates, its still usable
As long as new browsers go under this system, there is equipment that supports it (and this is the entire computer park, from Pentium-III to Intel Core i7) and certificates are updated, Windows POSReady 2009 will remain “alive”.
This OS will become “dead" only after the termination of one of the three above-mentioned events - due to the lack of certificates and support for new browsers, it will be impossible to work with it on the Internet, and due to the lack supported equipment - there will be no sense due to the uselessness.
it's funny that on all your computers you register it to "Steve jobs"
I love the sound of the floppy. Nice work!
I have this installed on a Dell Dimension 2350 from 2003. I must say it's a fantastic retro gaming OS. Boots up instantly, plays turn-of-the-millennium games like a charm, with only the integrated Intel graphics @ 640 x 480 (some work great at 800 x 600), and it's basically XP, which turned out to be a great OS for games. Only complaints would be the lack of compatibility modes and that some old games run too fast or unexpectedly crash.
The extended support from Microsoft is nice. Heck might be more safe to use than XP after 2019.
I have one of those Compaq Deskpro EN with the same specs that I use to play old windows 98 games. Very solid computer.
Wow, I was looking for some good stuff to watch and you uploaded a video 12 minutes ago. Yeah!
This version of Windoze is still available. I just downloaded it on November 6th 2020.
2016 and windows XP is still going strong :D
2024 and xp is still a solid operating system :D
Fascinating, not heard of it before....AHHH, ONE DIRECTION!!!, MY EARS!!! YOU COULD HAVE WARNED ME!! ;o)
Windows XP: Story of my life :')
You can also enable extended support on regular xp with a few registry tweaks that basically mimic what the posready version sends to ms update. Did it on an old laptop a few years ago and its still updating.
i figured posready meant piece of shit ready for slow computers. - and a tip, Royal Noir; a theme for windows xp MCE2005 that never was released, can be readily downloaded off the interwebs and installed into the themes pack on the OS, makes it all pretty... I've got 3 custom themes for XP that ironically arent really useful any more, the Zune theme, the Royal Noir theme, and the Royal Noir Black theme..
Sad to hear that support for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 ended three days ago. Looking ahead in the future, would you continue using XP/WEPOS for your existing machines or move on to something else?
I’m a manager for a company. I worked at a store for a long time that had registers and POS screens installed with Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. They still use it and it works fine. I recently got moved to another store and they have newer registers and stuff so they actually have Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro. Which is the newest and last version of Windows Embedded. But I don’t see a reason to have Windows Embedded installed on a home PC?
You just know Microsoft will release one of those "EMERGENCY OUT OF BAND UPDATES", because...… "REASONS". :D
Only two years until POSReady is out of support.
The time has come now for it to die
excellent video, nvr even heard of this version before... thanks for the heads up
I used a registry hack to make Windows XP a POSReady system, and it got updates, then the HDD crashed (over 4 million bad sectors on the HDD), now it's just running regular XP, I activated the PC, and I was quite surprised to see Windows XP activate, even though the support ended for that.
My Dad has this on an embedded system that he uses for his business. Until now I didn't give it much thought. I didn't know that it was supported for that long, maybe new updates can be ported over to XP.
I do want to evaluate this for myself, I'll be looking to see how it performs as a domain client, assuming that it can function that way at all. I'm also keen to see whether or not it has the XP Luna theme that I like so much.
welp its already April 4 2019 so rip
R.I.P
Just an FYI: There is a registry hack for regular XP installs that allows you to download the POSReady patches.
Eli W Yes, I already heard about that months ago.
You can also use a software like Virtualbox to simulate a virtual computer and install this Windows without having to use a separate computer, or risk having your hard disk erased.
The hard disk is basically a file on your computer, and you can also set the amount of RAM or CPU cores to give this virtual computer, so it's quite versatile software.
he has alot of computers, plus it looks cooler
3:55 Steve jobs owns your computer now?
thank you for this video! this is awesome to know :) I like how they called it POS, however... xD
The color scheme it used at startup is the Royale theme, which is also used in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Thank you, this is a good replacement for windows fundamentals that is also a stripped down XP :).
Interesting. I remember when we were discussing that during your last live stream. The installation environment is similar to that used on Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, and the theme is that used on Windows XP Media Center Edition. Do you intend to use this for real on that computer?
+themaritimeman Why not? XP came out in 2001, and that pc must be from around '99. What is unsuitable for that machine is present day software, even if XP compatible.
I never said anything about compatibility or suitability for the computer. I asked if he was going to run it as the main OS on this computer because this was the first time he demonstrated running POSReady on a normal PC. (Note that you're replying to a 2 year old comment.)
Looking at the MS website, POSReady 2009 will actually be supported until 2024. So another 10 years of XP
XP Pro was always my choice OS. How do you get this? Subscriber Pack or is it Free?
free
FYI you can add a "POSReady=1" entry into the registry of regular Windows XP and download all the updates Microsoft put out for this POS version without actually having to reinstall from scratch. Just google it.
MSN, Messenger, Outlook Express?
I’ve never once used any of that. POSReady should’ve been the regular XP release
Can't remove any of that in windows 10 though..
This reminds me… I remember seeing *photo kiosks* at the local mall running windows embedded *POSReady* 2009 which is somewhat weird to me. I'm not sure about the difference between Standard and POSReady.
6:19 One Direction - Story of My Life
The only thing changing for most people once XP's support is dropped is that XP won't receive security updates.
I don't think using POS Ready 2009 is really a "fix" for that since it won't be receiving security updates either- Microsoft Provides Security updates through the Extended support period, but it only does so- as listed on it's "Product Support Lifecycle" page, for Business, Developer, and Desktop Operating System products. POSReady is an Embedded Operating System product and therefore I don't think it will receive security updates. From what I can tell it hasn't received security updates since it's mainstream support dropped in 2008- currently it's Security updates are XP's security updates, but those will stop once XP's extended support is dropped, putting folks that use it in pretty much the same spot.
No,there are some updates only meant for Windows Embedded (XP based),but only the Embedded For Point of Service v1.1 and POSReady 2009 gets them through automatic updates.
Shared this on my facebook. Good to know!!
The mounted computers on the forklifts we use at work use Windows Embedded 7 Standard.
was it my video that you found the product key from?
but can it run crysis 3 in 4k
SeemsLegitGaming But does Crysis 3 supports Windows Embedded 2009 just like it would support Windows XP and Vista?
@@evanetheridge3798 For the Ram, that would only see 3.2 GiB, and good luck with Titan X Graphics Card. The maximum that you can use is the GeForce 9xx Series.
So basically this is somewhat of a rebadged Windows FLP. Windows FLP was also based off of Windows XP but it also had limited features. Microsoft previously released FLP in 2006 by the time Windows 98 & ME were beginning to lose support as part of an inexpensive way to upgrade.
Thanks for posting this, I was not aware of this particular version of XP until now. I have a NeoWare thin client PC w/ 128 MB of RAM and a 16 GB CF card as hard disk (with IDE-CF adapter, the unit has a 44-pin IDE port on the system board) that I've been trying to install standard WinXP Pro SP3 from a CD (using an external USB DVD drive) to the machine with no luck (it usually will freeze up during install). Maybe this flavor of XP will fare better with this system.
Looks like POSReady '09 shares a lot of things with WinFLP. Good to know.
thats a nice machine, i used to have one, and wish i still had.
The Omnia.9 FM Broadcast audio processor runs this version of Windows.
1D for the win!!! Zayn is and will always be my favourite!!!!! ANY TRUE DIRECTIONER WILL STILL SEE AND HEAR FIVE!!!!! Plus he is hot!!!!!
Windows haters probably will call it windows piece of shit ready xD
I just installed this on my Compaq Evo D510 system,
and i have a bounch of software that i am planning to install too :D
Paint shop pro 6.0
Norton anivirus 2005(just for fun)
and last but not least Photo studio 5.5
I did some searching and found out that due to licensing constraints POSReady2009 can't run any versions of Microsoft Office. Have you tried installing any MS office software on this PC to see if that's true? And since you used a product key, is the 120 day evaluation removed?
I can confirm this. No MS Office 2007 or 2010 will install on Windows embedded POS2009. So, looks like I will have to migrate my older machines to Win7 32 bit.
mrflashport Or get OpenOffice.
mrflashport
Interesting. What happens if you try?
Weird, I got ms office 2007 to install and run perfectly on this version of windows... I can't get a screen shot now because I'm defragging (I stupidly installed it on a fat32 partition), but if you want I'll get one tomorrow.
*****
Interesting. If you could post the screenshot that'd be great. Either way, I think I might install this in a virtual machine because it does seem very interesting (I'll attempt to install office 2007 and/or 2010 while I'm at it too, maybe even do a video on it).
I read that this copy of Windows was accidentally compiled on a PC with a virus, and that the installation is infected. They say to run MBAM and clean it out.
Where at? I can't find any articles with that info [yet]...
Where are you reading this? Microsoft doesn't say this anywhere.
Beats me. Must be a rumor...
some reported of a ssoexec.dll with some copies and it hides within the temp folder
I doubt it. Microsoft wouldn't recommend MBAM, but their own AV software (MSE).
Why did you register it under 'Steve Jobs'?
I was interested to install and use this but I had a few problems with some programs working. I was told by another person to just edit the registry in normal xp and you still get updates which I must say is working to this day.
Will you be installing this on your IBM ThinkCenter?
Are you tried this with android system or some sort of system who having similarities with android type systems? I hopefully you have this little netbook type thing.
3:55 Steve Jobs lol.
+ComputingWorld he does it to all of his installs of windows.
Did I hear correctly or were those in-built speakers in the end of the video?
Yes, the Compaq has a built-in speaker.
You actually sound like Steve Jobs, for a second I got a bit weirded out when I realized
i know support for XP is gonna end pretty soon. but my question is. cant you still use Windows XP just to browse the web and stuff like that? i have a friend in IT and he told me you could.
You can use any version of Windows for as long as you want. Microsoft just won't be releasing any more security updates for XP after April of this year. But if you have a good firewall and virus protection, then you don't really need those security updates anyway.
ok, thank you for replying.
VWestlife please answer this question why are you not using windows 7 or windows 10. there is windows embedded slandered 7 and windows 10 s.
I never knew Steve Jobs liked Microsoft lol
thank you for this tip, i wil try this on my old hareware.
Do you have the soundmax audio drivers for a Compaq Deskpro EN? My drivers have corrupted and I can't find the correct one online
What kind of keyboard do you have on this computer?
So I am trying to use the POSready2009 ver. of windows but It won't install ether java or Flash. I have no idea what is going on.
I'm using POSReady on my old MacBook and I was able to install Flash using the offline install. I did not install Java yet.
Sucks this is not on Technet
Interesting..PirateBay here I come!
3:57... *Are u Steve Jobs or that's Steve's old computer???*
On MS' site it says: "Office productivity applications are not licensed to be run on POSReady." My question is: have you tried or can you try to install MS Office on POSReady 2009? I would like to install it on an older laptop and use it for internet browsing, office applications and CAD. Thanks!
I have not tried, but read the other comments below, because other people have tried installing various versions of Office.
vwestlife Thanks, I see some report that it installs fine, I'll try it.
I wish it was easier to buy the full version of Windows Embedded POS Ready 2009
Thank you! A very helful video! :D
How do you install "Windows Embedded" from a CD? I guess embedded, doesn't necessarily mean embedded.
Is Windows 9 worth the wait for someone still on XP? I have a friend still on Windows XP who refuses to upgrade... should she wait for 9 or try 7? (I'm doubting a Gateway laptop circa 2007 could run 9, but 7 would work)
Heh, check the date on the comment... that was posted before Windows 10 was even announced ;)
Xp??
I'd thought they'd base it off one of their newer products, like vista or 7.
There is a Windows Embedded POSReady 7 based on Windows 7, but its disk space requirement is about 10 times higher than that of the XP-based version!
Is this one of your main computers? If it isn't, what is your main PC?
I do use a Deskpro EN often, but my newest main computer is an HP Compaq MP8200S: ua-cam.com/video/StBDO22bT6Q/v-deo.html
ah. I remember watching the video a while back. xD
Do you sell old computers?
with that product key windows posready 2009 will run longer than 120 days?
Hlex LV Not with the product keys that are freely available online; those all "timebomb" after 120 days, even if you use a program that claims to remove the timebomb. Someone with an MSDN subscription can provide you with a volume licensing key that does not have a timebomb.
Can U game on this OS? I mean games like Team Fortress Classic, Classic Counter Strike, Halo Combat Evolved, DOOM 3 and more.
It can run any games that Windows XP can run.
vwestlife Also does it support the same drivers as Windows XP like for a NVIDIA card, wireless USB adapter and more.
You can actually install POSReady on a USB drive.
It is recognized as Windows XP Professional in software detecting programs and msinfo32.Also there are actually registry remains of malware and other junk on this version of windows because they just used a random xp machine and rebuilt the image.
hmm werid
I was wondering what you were gonna do when support ends for XP. I figured you would just switch to Windows 7, but I didn't even know this existed! I would have preferred this to the standard XP, since it's not full of useless crap... whatever you need, you can just install it yourself anyway.
Once this is not supported and you like the xp interface then I would recommend Windows server 2008
Support for Windows Server 2008 ends in 2020 -- not much of a difference compared to support for Windows XP (with the WEPOS patch) ending in 2019.
+vwestlife wow I didn't realize that because it is about equivalent to windows7
Server 2008 R2 is based on Windows 7, but Server 2008 is based on Vista, so it will get three extra years of support compared with Vista. It is also the last Windows with the classic menu.
would it work fine on old laptop?
would be cool to see how fast it runs on a late 90s laptop that was made for windows98
So it didn't come with any cash register-type programs?
Correct, it didn't.
I rather like that color scheme. There was a download for regular XP that added that scheme. Too bad it won't work with modern versions of Windows.
THE OUD DAYS❤
I did see some NCR FastLane self-checkouts at a Safeway that restarted themselves and it said 'Windows XP Embedded'. It could be the same version.
There are four different Embedded versions of XP: Windows XP Embedded ("XPe"), Windows XP for Embedded Systems (not the same as XPe), Windows Embedded Standard 2009, and Windows Embedded POSReady 2009.
You forgot Windows Embedded For Point of Service v1.1 lol
Anyway, if you want to know, the support cycle follows, XPe is supported until 1/16/16, XP for ES ended on 4/8/14, Embedded Standard and POSReady 2009 is supported until 4/9/2019.
Why the f*ck would you play that Song!
***** Because I like One Direction.
+Jamieson Guy-Toogood HEY 1D is the best!!!!!
+Jamieson Guy-Toogood ZAYN WILL SMITE THEE FOR THY WORDS!!!!! Directioners Unite!!!!!
+Jamieson Guy-Toogood I dont know. Torture? Like I dont know on what kind of crack the judges were on that day.
I have a thinkpad T20 that I've been working on this would be perfect for, particularly since I can't get the wireless drivers to work on the 2k install I have, so having an OS with current support would be great. How is the availability of security software? Does it have anything like Security Essentials?
You can, but I recommend Comodo anti-virus.
To me, it looks unusual, and I didn't know that they are continuing to renew the Windows XP for folks who likes them, and the theme looks different.
I think the Original XP has been shown around 2003, and the Embeded POSReady 2009 are not Original to XP.
funny how some have gotten so used to xp that they will go through the trouble of installing this just to be able to still use xp. Great tip for those who want that though.
4:01 Registered to Steve Jobs from APPLE?
+MilenniumEdition 56 You can enter whatever name and organisation you want. He is just taking the piss.
OMG! I had one of these! it was my first PC!
+mharris1270 Wow, the 80's must have been cool,
Would it work to have a blank partition to install this on, or will it completely format the entire drive regardless?
During installation you can either choose a partition to install it in, or create and format a new partition. If you have the drive split up into multiple partitions I'm sure it would leave the rest of them alone.
What is this a 2009 version of Windows XP ?
Registered to steve jobs lol im dead
So does this mean that I can no longer use regular xp? And what does the other themes look like?If I were to get POSREADY, could I still play big games on it?
You can use XP for as long as you want, but Microsoft will stop providing security updates for it in April of this year.
vwestlife Does that mean that it will be no longer secrue? I've never known what those updates ment when it was updating itself!
***** mraiwa1000 Yep, pretty much! But, it is highly recommended if you HAVE to use XP, kick it off the internet, run it in a Virtual Machine, or install POSReady 2009 and run TweakNT 1.21 to remove the timebomb.
Windows OS TweakNT does not remove the timebomb from POSReady. It acts like it does, but set your clock ahead a few months and the OS will bomb. You need to (re)install POSReady using a non-timebombed product key. (Using a utility to change the product key won't work either.)
vwestlife Oh. Thanks for that info. :)
+vwestlife Here, I am installing Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 on my PC (Motherboard: Redfox), and sounds okay, although my computer is no longer turned on (that was due to power supply issue, no virus in my computer).
...I have an issue on my netbook. My HP Mini 311 has an issue when I attempt to install Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. An the issue? She (literally the Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 Installer) told me that Setup Cannot Find Hard Disk, although it exist. Can you give some actions, or tips from that? :)
Note: Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 (also with Windows Embedded Standard 2009) logo will appears Windows 7 Logo since Windows 7 and Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 (also with Standard 2009) released in year 2009, but in reality it's Windows XP, especially in Startup Screen and Welcome Screen.
Make sure your hard drive is set to IDE/ATA/Compatibility mode, not AHCI mode.
+vwestlife by using BIOS Setup? Speaking of the BIOS in my HP Mini 311 Laptop, the name was Insyde H2O. However, I can't change the setup since no setup for SATA Drive Settings. There is another way of setting up?
I tried to slipstreamed the installer (only Windows XP) to SATA IDE, yet no longer read the disc. I do not know how to do it, since my laptop was reformatted back to Original OS which is Windows 7 (this time is Ultimate Version, since it was Starter before) from Windows XP Pro SP2 in a certain computer shop using USB Flash Drive. :(
Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs could of been another option.I have it installed on my Dell Inspiron 4100.
FLP is significantly slower than POSReady2009,tried it before.Furthermore there are also tons of services that can be disabled on WEPOS2009 which makes it faster.
