@ 46:46, What Andy is talking about here is exactly what I loved about Paul McCartney especially when I heard "Uncle Albert-Admiral Halsey" for the first time as an eight year old kid. And the first XTC song I ever heard was "This is Pop" and I was delighted by the playfulness of it. Every XTC album was always a smile inducing surprise.
+Andrew D he's got a good brain, considering what it must've been thru the last few decades! too bad he and colin don't see eye to eye so much,i wonder what that's about!
Fantastic interview! I could listen to Andy forever. and the Sodajerker guys were really good - very knowledgeable and genuine. The way Partridge's mind works is amazing...and he's such a funny geezer. Could've been a comedian, doing impressions (in addition to inventing games and being a musical genius!) Lovely post Egidio, thanks as always
I love this interview. I've listened to it several times. Andy is so fascinating and talented, and open, and so incredibly honest. Andy, your words do stand alone as poetry. 💜
Really interesting interview! I love hearing musicians and songwriters talk in technical detail about their craft. Hearing Andy talk about his writing process helps me understand better how his melodies, harmonies, arrangements, and lyrics all seem so integrated and right together.
Had to smile at the bit where Andy's is asked to write a theme song for Fox TV. I think Gary Clark went through the same pain which he wrote about in his song 'Don't Believe In Hollywood' - "Can you take the middle 8 and stick it on the end' ;-)
I laughed so hard about the guy who told Andy that he didn't like the Beatles & Andy decided the guy was sub-human...I used to have a supervisor who snottily said she didn't like the Beatles...I had the same reaction. I thought we might find some kind of common ground in music, but it was not to be! However, from then on, I could count on her reaction to everything to be off from my own.
I feel like anyone who is a musician or genuinely loves music for what it is, will appreciate the Beatles. The only people who would say the Beatles suck either haven't listened to them or strictly listen only to what's popular today (which is mostly garbage)
Colin wrote a ton of great songs too, "Making Plans for Nigel," "Generals and Majors," "Grass," "My Bird Performs," etc. While Andy was of course the most important member of the band, I think Colin's songs are on average just as good as Andy's, and the two of them really pushed each other to be better songwriters and made XTC that much better.
take your point but I don't think we are talking in lennon vs mccartney preportions here. BUT colin is a very, very, very good bassist to my ears. a very unusal bass player, and very difficult to place, style- wise. love the guy, and yeah i agree ..he wrote some real XTC classics
yeah Andy is without a doubt the engine that drove XTC, but I just think people breeze over Colin like he was just this random bass player not worth discussing when as you say he wrote some classics of his own as well
not sure you could go downhill. original? always. thank you for having such a stringent personal qualifications. *dinner of roast orchid in a hot air baloon* feck ya, bjork! love you so much, andy! hero to me. :)
Andy - The 'Scarecrow People' chord you demonstrated is a C#-9 voiced C# - E - B - D#. The bass note alternates between C# & A. I suppose if you had to give a name to the chord with the A bass, you could call it Asus2, #11... Cheers!
Better than the Beatles.... absolutely. A far greater breadth of work (Punk/New Wave/Rock/Folk/Pop/Psych). Lyrically more astute, musically more adventurous. Virgin consistantly arsed up the marketing of the band so they never got the exposure they should have. Despite that they are still one of the most influential bands in Pop history and it is such a shame they have not produced more music.
As someone who experienced the flowering of musical talent which occurred on both sides of the pond in the late '70s/early '80s, I look around today and wonder 'whappened?'.
Great interview, guys. Andy's up there for me as well. I own everything, including his "Fuzzy Warbles" series. In other words, I've got a problem. His collaboration with Zappa's Mike Keneally ("Wing Beat Fantastic") is well worth picking up. The whole thing absolutely drips with Andy's songwriting style, from the keys he plays in to the hooks. Hell, even Mike's vocals sound like Andy's at times. Keep up the great work, fellas. And best of luck with your endeavors. Mike Keneally - "I'm Raining Here, Inside" from "Wing Beat Fantastic"
this was a cool collection, i was taken back especially by the demo version of mayor of simpleton, its a totally different song with totally different lyrics.
Lol. Fancy having a music teacher that recommends Mummer and The Big Express!!! Lucky man! Mine was playing early Beatles in 1978/9 and expecting us to get into it - cnut you were Mr Wheeler! I would say however if you are going to say Partridge is a great then Moulding isn't far off - and in some folk's opinion (mine) on a par! To me XTC are XTC not an individual. And always will be.
Funny, my high school music teacher played us Scissor Man in '79 and that's what made me check out XTC and thus becoming a lifelong fan. Thank you Mr. Allen, my awesome music teacher!
+Parkwaymania wow! i had the squarest high school teachers ever, starting in '79 in michigan! luckily my mom'n'dad were hip to all the coolest music we could find!
@@randoshus3762 It's not the same. The band's performance is excellent, and I suppose the tapes are somewhere kept. It's the production that turned the album dull
seriously they deserve triple pay from now on ,for all the years they worked and never had much money! am i right? well it's ironic,i doubt there's a band more-loved by better people! there could never be one!
I always thought 25 O'Clock sounded very derivative of Too Much to Dream Last Night by the Electric Prunes. Not in a bad way but in a fun, campy Rutles kind of way.
Too bad he refuses to make pop songs anymore like the great 'Ship Trapped In Ice', 'End of the Pier', 'Earn Enough for Us', 'Mayor of Simpleton, etc...
Better than The Beatles, almost. No doubting his ability in years gone by. But compared with many great composers of the past and some of the present, whose song/music writing abilities grew with age, Andy's seems to have ground to a halt. Has he no wish to write ever again, has he no great lyrics whistling around his head? I'll never tire of listening to his, and Colin's past glories, I can not understand why he just doesn't move on from all the bad times, he seems constantly to bring up.
yeah he's always been a moody guy, that's okay,it always worked for him, certainly he should make his own you tube channel,i'm one of his number one fans!
Andy Partridge is so entertaining both on stage and off. Both Andy & Colin are great songwriters. I really love & miss XTC x
Just love and adore Andy Partridge. The guy is an underrated genius!
Always love anyone who shows some passion for XTC.Good work.

You have to change the title of this video this is an "Andy Partridge Songwriting Master Class"
Great.Andy Partridge is very clever, interesting, great imagination, brilliant guitar player, writer,a real entertainer.Thank you for this.
I could listen to AP talk all day. I don't think he ever runs out of interesting, helpful, or funny things to say
+Andrew D he's got a good brain, considering what it must've been thru the last few decades! too bad he and colin don't see eye to eye so much,i wonder what that's about!
I'd listen to Andy Partridge FART!!! These guys are GREAT interviewers. xx SF

Absolutely fantastic interview. Great to hear about his process.
So fantastic to listen to someone you have so much respect for who can make you laugh so hard.
just a fantastic songwriting conversation. hilarious---its partridge after all----but this finds him in rare form--even for him. thanks for posting!
Excellent ! Thanks for posting.
Thanks for uploading. Loved XTC in the early '80s.

Beatles suck
Its true. I never trust someone who doesn't like the Beatles.

Liking the Beatles isn't obligatory

No, I can't believe anyone who really knows their XTC brushes over Colin's contribution.
you'd be surprised by some of these other youtube commenters unfortunately
***** meeting place, generals, love at first sight, runaways , ball and chain etc etc yeah a pretty decent songwriter in his on right
great musician, great guitar-player, interesting human being, loves rory g, praise him !
Great interview!
Got into the dukes of stratosphear first, xtc are great, andy partridge is a national treasure
That was a great chat!! ♥️♥️♥️
There's no doubt Alan Partridge is one of the funniest tv characters of the last 20 years or so. I'm a huge fan.
not sure you could go downhill. original? always. thank you for having such a stringent personal qualifications.
*dinner of roast orchid in a hot air baloon* feck ya, bjork! love you so much, andy! hero to me. :)
Eh, Bjork is fun. XTC is brilliant. Enjoy both and be richer for it!

Bizarre statement
jambo jones how so?
Not a patch on the BEATLES asses, are you too stupid ?
Th e Beatles were great, XTC was great, so there's no problem. Who cares about debating this, when we can just enjoy what they've left us.

Mr. Partridge IS high up there with the best British songwriters. And Skylarking should be redone.
It was remastered in 2001...

legend!!!
XTC were one of the best bands of the 80's. Shame they weren't much more successful.
Jonathan York Very true however it seems as if XTC's reputation is growing more and more with each passing year. Better late than never I suppose.
80s? Don't forget about some of their fine work in the 90s ("Peter Pumpkinhead") and early 2000s ("Playground") and more.
@@lmp9726 yes, I've got Nonesuch, Apple Venus and there's some good songs there I agree.
Andy Partridge must have felt like Jimmy Durante when he found that chord sequence for 'Scarecrow People'.
interesting! what does andy think is a horrible song? ,
he sure made some great ones, more than i could recall! everything they ever did was great!
Genius.
Shame he has no interest in writing a memoir. It would be fascinating.
Andy , Colin and Dave Gregory should wade in and put an album together..the world would be a much better place...

A red white and blue cover with a title like XTC-Tradition...
Freakin sweet!
Here's to The Cosmic Muckspreader!
I remember playing their double album at some UCF (Florida) function until it got shut down. I tried to advance the exposure they should have.
does andy have a you tube channel? i would be surprised if he didn't..!

This wasn't meant to be an insult, just that can't understand how a brilliant composer such as Andy, can just fade away. Maybe he's not angry now.
yeah he's always been a moody guy,
that's okay,it always worked for him,

He lost his temper
If Colin would make up with him he'd probably do more XTC stuff...
Wonderful but these comparisons are silly. He and the band were what they were. Get over it and just enjoy the music
Always good value in an interview is Mr P 👍👍👍
Great interview!
