It's because we're talking about the brain right after the birth. Every baby's brain develops enormously during the first days, weeks, months, years. So many neural connections are being built when the baby learns new things about their environment. It's the same case here, the brain obviously got good activation with the help of the family, therapies etc., a demand for connections was created so the braincells grew them. The phenomenon is called neural plasticity.
I think we are learning more and more about how the brain can, with specific training/exercises, rewire itself to compensate for functions that are underdeveloped or not performing correctly. What an incredible thing! I wish this little boy and his family the best. I really admire their determination, honesty and passion ❤
The Glory of God is present in the survival and thriving of this little boy... May he grow up to be a blessing to all who encounter him, and his parents are just absolutely awesome!
This is True but also now he can be an advocate. And advocate of the same situation. I don't believe in abortion for anything except death of the infant or a implies not comparable with life like the baby didn't make lungs or kidneys which is not survivable.
Children aren't fainting flowers. Giving them trust and truth goes a long way. The worst thing you can do is lie to a kid about something important. Because either they notice or they find out later and then you lost all credibility and they feel devalued.
@bowtoyoursensei554 I came to make the same comment. I have 2 friends who would have died if they didn't terminate. As a healthcare professional, I believe we should leave these decisions to the patient and their doctor.
I once saw a program about a person with a brain disease that made the one half of the brain shrink to almost zero. Surgeons removed what was left of the half dead brain. They expected the person could not control half his body (because thats how the brain works) but the person woke up from surgery and the half brain that was well had taken over all functions on both sides of the body.
Every time I have the slightest disagreement with my mum, she keeps repeating that it was the worst day when I was born, that this is the biggest regret of her life, even that she wishes if I had been aborted. When that mother looked at her child when she was asked about the day he was born, and she said what a wonderful day you were born, and he curled up all cutely, I got a bit teary eyed. God bless that lovely family
The child is having fun and not paying attention to the big adult talk. I would think his abilities have some limitations. He is a cutie pie though and appears happy.
My son was born at term. Then , within a few months of his birth, he developed a seizure disorder. It stopped, then the other side of his brain produced seizures. It stopped, and no further seizure activity as he grew and developed. As my son learned to walk, it became apparent, that he had an abnormal gait. They did a brain scan, and discovered that his cerebellum was just a fluid sac, the condition is called Dandy-Walker varient. Now, at this point, my son was 3 years old, and doctors were telling me all the things my son would never be able to do. They also diagnosed him with a combined form of ADHD, his being a high functioning form. I wasn't going to sit by and let my son not get better. I decided to test a theory I had. I thought a focal point would cause my son's brain to compensate for the deficits. I bought him a plug and play video game. My son's balance is perfect. He could run, roller skate, ice skate, etc. His hand/eye coordination is better than mine. My son is soon to be 22 years old. Im glad I didn't listen to doctors, because they were wrong in his case. Sometimes you have to listen to your gut, and even take cues from your child. My son needed to be given the best chance possible, and I was not going to give up.

i'm pretty skeptical of that it was only 2%, also neuron growth slows down a lot after birth, the brain might have been squished together but i'm not sure
I think it was probably compressed into 2% was very small due to fluids around it. Brain can still grow after the child is born and even though it might never be at 100% of the size, our brains can adopt. People have been in accidents and lost parts of their brain and they still adopted and recovered. Human brains are amazing.

Yes 2% volume squashed by fluid against the skull, but after most of the fluid was drained his brain expanded to about 50% volume and another scan at 2 years old revealed quite a normal looking, but small, brain with a lot of fluid still in the centre.
Actually, it was a shunt placed by doctors that revealed an actual brain was there, squished down from far too much fluid. Once the shunt was placed, the brain he actually had all along was allowed to grow. So, science gets the credit, here. It's extremely disingenuous for the parents to be parading him as The Miracle Boy. They do a grave disservice to those trying to end abortion. This could cause some problems for the cause.
Am I the only one who thinks it's really awful that they are talking about this right in front of the boy? I wonder how he is feeling. We don't use the full extent of our brains so what he has, is likely being fully used for his survival
