The problem was that when this came out it was competing with other decent animated movies like The Land Before Time.

I'm at the one month mark now of when I had to put my beloved kitty soulmate to rest. I'm middle-aged now and I've had him for 18 years. He even looked a lot like Oliver. This song destroys me every time I hear it now because he and I really did love each other as much as Jenny and Oliver do here and I so very much miss playing with him and doing any little thing I could to make him feel loved and cared for.

This movie is so underrated. I love it to pieces, it's one of the most touching, heartwarming movies Disney has made.
Most of Walt Disney's 80's movies are disregarded, I think. They call that Walt Disney's "Dork Age," and yet it produced gems like this, and my sister's favorite Disney movie, "The Fox and the Hound."
It wasn't until 1989 with the release of The Little Mermaid that the public started to enjoy Disney movies again, and the 90's were filled with much loved classics. Then Dinosaur came out in the year 2000 proving that Disney didn't yet know what they were doing with CGI animation, and that was followed by The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, and Brother Bear. I don't know about Atlantis but when Treasure Planet came out, Disney was starting to get worried about traditional 2D animation. Then Home on the Range was their last film like that, for awhile.
Following Home on the Range were a slew of poorly done CGI animated films, such as Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. And then they got John Lasseter in to help them, and because of him we got Bolt, which was the first time in many years that Disney did animation right (given that Enchanted only had fourteen minutes of animation.)
Bolt is the most recent good animal movie they made, not counting Winnie the Pooh because they aren't really animals but toys. (And I don't consider Winnie the Pooh to be a good movie anyhow.)

I teared up a little at this scene. It's rare to have a bond like that between you and your kitty :) I wish everyone would treat animals like this. It's so wrong that we have animal abuse and animal testing. People need to find their compassion.

I have a bond like that with my cat Domino c: I honestly don't know what I'd do without him he always puts a smile on my face :) I believe that animals deserve to be on this planet more than we do and it's horrific what humans have done to their habits and how some treat them. Treat all animals with the love and respect they deserve!!
I had a bond on my dog Prince. But sadly I had to put him down at age 9 because he had a stroke. He wasn't eating that really well. He been drinking. But whenever he moves he whines super bad. When we let him out to go potty, he just lay their and not moving. Whenever I come out he walks towards me still in pain whimpering. And it was sad to see him go.

The comments here sharing stories of cats and even dogs they miss are so sweet and sad. This sequence captures the purity of the bond between a social pet and its owner so perfectly. It's guaranteed to make me cry just from the overwhelming love it shows. So healing and kind. Oftentimes I forget the beauty of the world in all the misery of living, something like this speaks to that yearning for something untarnished.

This is one of those forgotten Disney movies, you never really hear about it or see traces of it anywhere, I've been to Disney World a few times and I don't recall ever seeing anything for this movie there, it's unfortunate

My sister and I used to sing this song to each other all the time when I was little (she was 12 years older than me). She passed away suddenly in 2021 and I miss her so much every day.

This movie was one of my absolute favorite songs as a kid. I grew up as an autistic kid in a house with multiple abusers. I used to fantasize about being loved by someone like they way she loved that cat. I remember crying to this song because I realized that no one could every live me that purely. Sometimes I still cry about it and dream of that day when I can experience that kind of love.
It's never too late for your dream to come true. There is more than one person out there in the world able to fill that role. I deeply hope you find them.
What a coincidence, after seeing this movie, I've met a small kitten with the same color as Oliver the very next day. I felt so happy :)
You are right on brother. Oliver looks more like a young lion cub, more like Simba than a cat. I love the movie simply for the cuteness of Oliver and the bond he shares with the girl.

I rescued a kitten who was abandoned by his mother. He was an orange tabby/tiger cat. He was so little he fit into the palm of my hand. He had to be bottle fed. I named him Oliver and I would sing this song whilst he slept on my chest. Then when he was full grown if I sang this song he would come running. He passed away a few years ago and I miss him terribly. I will always associate this song with him now.

Constantine Palaiologos I feel for you. My dad has a lot of issues and is verbally/emotionally abusive to my mom (and to a lesser extent, me). Things have been tense in my family lately. I broke down at the same exact scene you did.
I don’t cry, but that doesn’t stop that stuff from being touching. Oliver and Jenny are my two favorites in this movie (which is my favorite Disney classic, by the way). In fact, I headcanon that Jenny was feeling that her parents didn’t care about her. So when they came home the day after her birthday, Jenny was very unwelcoming towards them until they made it up to her by showing her how much they cared about her by helping Fagin get a job and spending time with Jenny and Oliver by extent.

i haven't listened to this for a few weeks. As soon as she started singing i teared up, i sang this to my cat a lot and last Monday he was put to sleep. I love this song so much but it brought back some pretty nasty memories and well now I'm pretty sad. Which is ironic cause i thought listening to this would cheer me up. I'm sorry if i seem like I'm fishing for comments or that but i felt like i had to say this, and better here than Facebook right xx

This video shows me what a profound and intimate friendship that Oliver and Jenny have in this movie. To her, Oliver isn't merely a pet. He's the one true love of her life.
Also, it makes me hate that cold-skinned rat Sykes even more. Who agrees with me.
Alexander Seldes and boy did Sykes ever get his come-uppance. Him and his vicious dogs were killed towards the end of the film.
Sykes is probably the single most realistic Disney villain I've ever seen.
An evil sea witch and a dark fairy/ sorceress, great though they are, aren't the sorts of things people in the real world will face or fear.
However, a heartless, merciless crime boss who views torture and murder as standard business practices AND has no problem harming children to advance his goals?
That IS something that a lot of people in the real world (Especially in heavily urbanized areas) can encounter and be justifiably afraid of.

I never saw my cat as my pet. He's an orange tabby I got as my 16th birthday present. I named him Oliver due to my love for this film. He's my partner, my best friend, and the source for most of my strength. And so cuddly. I took him with me when I got married 5 years ago. He's now 14 but still is as playful as a kitten and dotes on my 2 year old son Daniel.

My husband looked depressed hearing this song he lost his calico kitty her name is Rose she died from cancer on December 13th 2018 and he raised her since she was a kitten along with her sister Abby been together for 15 years. Abby also passed away two years after her sister due to her tumor. My husband loved both of them Rose is his main cat and Abby is his grandmother’s cat they both got cremated and they shared the ashes so they keep half of Rose and half of Abby in their urns. When we first dated I get to meet Rose she’s such an angel she would purr when I petted her I never got close to cats before cause I’m a dog person but now I love both as long as cats don’t get aggressive towards me I was attacked by a cat before when I was a little girl I never teased him I slowly approached to pet the cat and he yowled and scratched me. I was scared and my friend’s mom patched me up the claws are so sharp.
I sing this song to my dog Nico… It brings me to tears at the thought of knowing that 1 day he will have to leave this earth. That’s why I try to spend as much time with him as I possibly can. I love him the same as my kids
I watched this movie a TON when I was 5-12 years old and I always liked this song. I hadn't heard it until today. Since then, I became a dog owner, and fell in love with my favorite pet at 14 and lost her at 23 (almost 2 years ago) abruptly to a tumor. The song took on so much more meaning hearing it today after so many years and completely broke me. Such powerful memories from those days as a child, the days with my 'good company', and also still missing my dog so much since summer 2022 combined to create immense emotion. Depressingly beautiful.

My cat was euthanised three weeks ago. He was a month short of 17 years old and I had him not long after I turned 6. I'm 23 now and I feel so lost without him. I associated this song with him since he was a kitten. He would follow me everywhere and was incredibly affectionate to those who he trusted. When I bought his body home, I played this song for him as a final goodbye.

I am now 23 years old. i am a strong willed black and white man. And a tear has not dropped from my face since i was 12 years old. When I was little I imagined that Jenny was me and Oliver was my cat Lonnie. He died about 2 or 3 years ago and this scene makes me cry. I miss you, Lonnie, I wish I could've said a proper goodbye to you ♥ Rest in peace, we'll see eachother again someday.

I was born in 97! i remember seeing this movie when i was 4. I watched it everytime. I cried because i begged my parents to watch the film again, but they said i watched it too much. Im almost 15 now, i still have it for VHS.

This movie was and is an underrated classic. Very poignant, heartbreaking intro but a joyous ending to it all. This, to me, is one of the best Disney films of all time. I would say it absolutely made me want to adopt a kitty and helped shape me into the feline afficianato I am today. Which I ended up doing.
I was reminded of it thanks to someone's instrumental piano composition of this song set to scenes from an anime called "She and Her Cat", that video tore me apart, absolute heartbreaker. I'm glad I was reminded of this, happier times in my life when I was a kid and I hope this movie lives on somehow.

My dog died today. He was almost 10 years old and his name was Flip. Though Oliver is a cat, I really feel very much like Jenny in this scene, particularly when she's playing piano, since Flip would love listening to me play. I miss him ever so much and can't stop crying whenever I think of him. This pain is just unbearable.

Leah At first, he wasn't the only one in the box. There was a sign on the box that said the kittens were free to good homes, and the others did get homes, but Oliver's journey made his home placement even more special. In fact, that's how my cat, Oliver was. Not the same situation as the one in the movie, but he was a stray. Him and his sisters were found outside somewhere and no one could find the mother. So in a way, my cat and I are kind of like Jenny and Oliver.
