Hey Dave, my Red Queen from you overwintered okay, but was slow to start laying up again. You suggested feeding, and it worked. She is beautiful and I just expanded the colony from a nuc to a 10-frame. Thanks.

Hi David, nice calm bees. I like the little 2 or 3 framers it takes a lot less bees to run them.
5 frames required to much Bee-Power for me last year. I need the breeding nucs to use less resources, I think I'll go run through some of your others videos on your mating nucs.
Thanks David, have a great Lords Days. Blessed Days...

hi David, can you tell us how your experiment went last year with peppermint candies in the corners to control small hive beetles? thanks

Quick question, when you made these 2 frame hives was there any particular reason why you didn’t make a larger box compartmentalized. So that there’s two groves going so there’s 3 sets of 2 frames. So 3 colonies in one box. Does it have something to do with heat in the winter? Like if one dies the space is greater to heat and then they all die?

Do you cut any vent holes in the bottom of the 5 & 2 frame Nuc's ?

I thought you raised your own bees? How did you install packages?

Sometimes it’s good to get outside genetics in your apiary. Just my guess.

Is it a bad idea to give the bees 1 shot of OAV, two or three days after installing the package with the queen still in the cage? I will be putting them in a 8 frame box (choked down to 6 frames with a couple of homemade follower boards). I only have two frames drawn the rest of the frame are starter strips and plastic foundation. Thanks

Do they need to be treated ?

    • @dcsblessedbees
      @dcsblessedbees 2 місяці тому +2

I'll check new bees coming in to my Apiary.
Many beekeepers will treat bees just before sale, but many also treat new bees coming into their Apiary. I don't know about while the queen is in the cage though. I'll let mine get settled in good before I do a treatment to new bees. I don't want to give the bees a reason to replace the queen, I'll let her get the box layed up some and full of pheromones before I'll do a treatment.
David has been a beekeeper a lot longer and has a lot more experience then I do, he would know more then me.

@@dcsblessedbees Thanks, I was think about doing a wash on a few but I would probably have to wait until the queen had been release and started laying to get a accurate test (testing mostly nurse bees). My thinking was with the queen caged maybe the would be less likely to abscond. I probably should wait until the queen is released and give her a few days to start laying (maybe around 10 days after I install them), then treat them before they have a chance to cap any cells.

@@kenblew2625 Doing it while she was still caged would add stress to the colony at an already really stressful time. Now you can do a wash on them before you release the queen.
Washes are a great tool but they give us information to help make decisions. A snapshot of the mite count at that time. You could do a wash and find out they have a real low count and not need to treat.
I'll let mine settle in before a treatment but I do, do washes to check, now some may do it different.
That is the great thing about beekeeping you get to develop your own style/system of beekeeping that fits your personal goals.😁 Blessed Days...

I find that you have to decide if you're going to make bees or make, honey. You can't do both because the population of the high gets knocked down so bad.By all the split you make to make Queens period you have to have a high population of workers together. Honey, you have to have a high population of movies to make queens. If you separate all the new bees from the hive to make qthen, you can't have a population you need. To get honey is biology 101

But making more hives is what we do. We are not in it for the honey. Its just our expertise.
