    I'm shocked that you thought Australia might be landlocked. Australia is an island and a continent. "Girt" means surround, therefore Australia is "girt by sea"- surrounded by sea.

    I grew up singing Advance Australia Fair every Monday morning at school assembly and it stopped after the first verse. Unfortunately I, like I'm sure many others, had no clue the anthem even has a second verse until I was much older. They changed a word or maybe two to make it more representative of the nation but it still isn't us. Ask most Aussies what should be the anthem and you'll get one of 3 answers. 1 - I am Australian, by The Seekers, 2 - I still call Australia home by Peter Allen or 3 - Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson. Unfortunately none of which is pompous enough to get 'national' anthem status so all 3 settle for 'unofficial' status instead. Come on Aussies, tell me I'm wrong?

    Yes, you're correct "Advance Australia Fair" is a poem- anthem and was published in early December 1878 it originally had 4 verses, today we only use 1 and 3. 2 and 4 are not used much. they went
    verse 1.
    Australia's sons, let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains let us sing,
    Advance, Australia fair.
    verse2.
    When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
    To trace wide oceans o'er,
    True British courage bore him on,
    Til he landed on our shore.
    Then here he raised Old England's flag,
    The standard of the brave;
    "With all her faults we love her still"
    "Britannia rules the wave."
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance, Australia fair.
    verse 3.
    While other nations of the globe
    Behold us from afar,
    We'll rise to high renown and shine
    Like our glorious southern star;
    From England soil and Fatherland,
    Scotia and Erin fair,
    Let all combine with heart and hand
    To advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    Advance, Australia fair.
    verse 4.
    Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
    Or dare a foot to land,
    We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
    To guard our native strand;
    Britannia then shall surely know,
    Beyond wide ocean's roll,
    Her sons in fair Australia's land
    Still keep a British soul.
    In joyful strains the let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"
    As of 1 January 1901 the Anthem was
    verse 1.
    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia Fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.
    Verse 2 (Modified from original verse 3)
    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who've come across the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To Advance Australia Fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.
    As of 1 January 2021 the first verse is now
    "Australians all let us rejoice,

    Since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the anthem was "God Save the Queen". In 1973 there was a competition to select a new national anthem. None of the entries were deemed suitable so they turned to some traditional songs. A poll was made to choose among "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" and "Song of Australia".
    In 1974 "Advance Australia Fair" was adopted as the Australian National Anthem, but in a turnaround in 1976 "God Save The Queen" was reinstated.
    In 1977 the Australian Electoral Office conducted a plebiscite, which found "Advance Australia Fair" to be the preferred anthem (43.6 per cent), followed by "Waltzing Matilda" (28.45 percent).
    In 1984 it decided that the National Anthem would consist of verses one and two of "Advance Australia Fair" with some changes. Another change was made in 2021 to more equally reflect the makeup of the population.
    "God Save the Queen" is the royal anthem and is still used at some official functions attended by Queen or members of the royal family.

    By far the best rendition of the National Anthem is to watch the National Anthem at the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games. This insipid version makes the song sound slow and plodding.At the Olympics it starts with stockmen on horses, goes through a jazz fanfare, a pop version and concludes with Julie Anthony's emotional rendition. Possibly the best anthem performance at any Olympics. Highly recommended.

      @@flamingfrancis Like many official requirements, of course they wanted the most staid and dull version. The Olympics version shows that the song is capable of being rousing and emotionally engaging if artists are allowed to put their heart into it.

    No-one else knows what "girt" means either. It is an archaic word for "girdled". And since no-one knows what a girdle is any more it doesn't communicate much.
    "Advance Australia fair!" is mangled poetic diction for "go forwards, good-looking Australia!"
    There _is_ an enormous abundance of mineral resources in Australia. A series of gold rushes from 1850 to the end of the 19th Century were hugely important in establishing the country, and we have long subsisted on exports of timber, wheat, wool, beef, coal, iron ore, bauxite, gold, silver etc. etc. In fact there is so much of the stuff that we have trouble maintaining manufacturing industry.
    They keep having to changing the official words of _Advance Australia Fair_ because the original ones adopted in 1977 were sexist, racist, and incredibly obsequious towards Britain. After maundering on about "gallant Cook" and his "true British courage" it used to assert that Britain is the homeland of the Brave, and threaten to fight anybody who said that Australians are not British. It was a stinker.

    The word "Fair" has such a strong meaning for us Aussies and to Advance our country in a fair and just manner is how we view ourselves. Here are a few "Fair." expressions that we regularly use>>> "Fair enough" is used to admit that something is reasonable or acceptable: "Fair suck of the sav." is used to express that a situation is not right or is unjust and that a person needs to be given a "Fair go." meaning a reasonable chance to a fair deal in life like everyone else. BTW a sav is short for saveloy a type of hot dog.
    I was ignorant of the origins of this famous expression (which is probably the one most associated with us!), so thank you for prompting me to check it out. "Fair dinkum" referred to a fair day's work and subsequently fair play. The word "dinkum" was reputedly coined on the Australian goldfields. It comes from one of the Chinese dialects widely spoken at the diggings: "din" and "kum" loosely translating as "true gold". Fair dinkum is being used less and less, and probably equates closest to saying "No BS mate!" I think I prefer Fair dinkum....and that's no BS mate!

It was changed to "one" so second line is now "for we are one and free" as Australia isn't young - first Australians arrived 40 000 years ago.
