      One of my favorite moments in this game was the time I one-hit-killed a patrolman with a throwing knife from about 20 meters away peeking out from behind a piece of rubble.
      When I investigated the body for ammo, I discovered the knife had embedded itself in the toe of his foot.

    IMO I liked TNO alot, both gameplay and storywise. I especially liked the fact that you can choose to sneak or shoot through levels. It's also nice that this is the first AAA FPS in years to actually have an old school health/armor system and more importanly, an automap.

    I really liked this game. Gave some nice challenge without being ridiculous. I played on Hard. But there was a massive difficulty spike near the end that seemingly came out of nowhere and I had to turn the difficulty down for a bit. Other than that, however, great game. Surprisingly for a shooter, I actually liked the characters. And the game actually had some replay value. A rare gem in the dirt that was 2014.

    Don't see how so many people missed the upgrade system. if you pay attention it quite clearly goes through everything in the first level of the game, and I think it would be difficult to get through the entire game without checking your journal. I always like to see the character bios and listen to recordings etc, so even if I missed the tutorial I still would've have found it. plus when you complete an objective (which you're bound to do without trying), it tells you that you've unlocked a new perk. so saying you didn't know the upgrade system exists just shows how much you didn't pay attention while playing

    • @777boman
      @777boman 8 років тому +2

      I actually really like how this game approaches the now obligatory upgrade system, because while it is there, you aren't forced to use it. I played the game completely ignoring it because I usually hate that kind of system in this kind of game. However I was surprised to find that when I looked at how it worked, that even then it is an improvement over most games today. The fact that it is an achievement system instead of XP makes it so much more engaging, fun and actually changes the way the game plays. I have a lot of problems with The New Order but the upgrade system is definitely not one of them. While the game succumbed to many other modern video game tropes I am very happy to say that it at least improved upon one of those tropes, hopefully other developers take note.

    Great review, as always!
    Something that really impressed me in this game is it's superb voicework when it comes to switching languages. As someone who speaks all languages used in the game, it's a blast to hear them all voiceacted perfectly. Usually germans in games sound like people who never spoke german in their lives. And I also haven't heard such perfect polish in a game before, even in polish versions of games. Even BJ speaks some polish and it sounds very good. I don't think many people got anything out of it but I loved it.

      With the exception of the narrative (and its derivatives), almost everything in the game is mediocre to bad. They didn't "refine" anything. All that was presented was executed in a problematic way. It's a miracle the game turned out any good.
      You won't see any reviews praising the combat or level design of this game. Without the story, what's left is a below average shooter.

    The thing about having to do pretty ridiculous actions for upgrades is two fold. One, you don't really need most of the upgrades and can get a fair amount almost accidentally. And two, it varies up the gameplay. It encourages you to try things you normally wouldn't try to do so as to go for those rewards. I can see a point to the idea that if a game heavily favors a certain strategy that going for anything aside from that strategy is handicapping yourself, it's different when it's just giving you bonuses for going out of your way(this also applies to your video on doom where you talked about this, but it is a bit more forced there, I must admit)

    On the game playing part, I will disagree that the game forces you to "stop-and-pop" even if it has the best cover system in a game. As you mentioned, you don't have to aim-down-sights to be effective so there are enough design decisions to accomodate the run-and-gun style. You can zip around the map while avoiding enemy gunfire. If you run around, you might notice you don't get hurt as much and especially when sliding. The overcharging health encourages a more run-and-gun approach. As someone who played on the Uber difficulty twice for both timeline playthroughs, I was flanking and being more of a mobile dual-wielding death machine and this is helped a lot by playing on PC. There are a few sections where the levels aren't as wide open, but most arenas give enough flanking opportunities. I will agree that it doesn't move as fast as a Quake-style game, but that doesn't automatically mean you're moving at Killzone levels of molasses speed. I believe this game is the best of both old-school twitch romps and modern narrative FPS development.
    It's one of my favourite shooters ever now to play because of the superb visual feedback (hit reactions, gore), excellent weapon lineup that allows for various strategies, and well-tuned combat scenarios where enemies are fallible compared to Call of Duty aimbots. There are very little bullet sponges, and even armoured robots or Supersoldiers can be downed in a few shots by either being shot in the back or with a charged LKW shot. There's even a decent stealth system on top. While Metro might have a stealth system too, it's not really as satisfying in the shooting department when you go all out. London Nautica is now one of my favourite levels in a game. The game encourages a lot of replayability so I'll disagree with the weekend romp comment, because the two timelines have different characters (J especially who brings up the best case of race relations in a videogame yet), cutscenes, upgrades, and there is 999 Mode unlocked through the Engima codes which gives unlimited ammo so you can just have a blast.
    The storytelling is top-notch with plenty of in-game touches that usually would be divorced to cutscenes or audio diaries and other expository ancillary approaches to the side. Such as being able to hear 16 conversations happen between prisoners in the Belica concentration camp, totally unrelated to the core storyline but just adding weight to the world. The characters are given so much heart and charm. The memorable lines and delivery. The deliciously dark humour that is well in the lines of Inglorious Basterds or Paul Verhoeven as you mentioned, keeps it just far enough from being tragedy porn. The tussles between Tesla and Fergus, the bonding over music with J and Wyatt, the father-son like relationship between. It all adds up to a brutal yet charming atmosphere. With the amount of ambition and deliverance on most of the execution and me being a huge fan of Riddick/The Darkness, this is why the game is my GOTY and really sets the standard for any other FPS.

    You made a very good point about the hip fire accuracy and high health. This let you play the game using the same strategy as in the original. I think that, by maintaining the overall style of gameplay, they made the visual design changes far more enjoyable to fans of the original rather than annoying.

    I think your issues with the upgrade system are illegitimate. Yes, it's asking you to do insensible things for sensible upgrades, but it's doing so in order to expand your tactics beyond what's sensible and reasonable. I never thought a reviewer that wasn't writing for a AAA magazine would ever complain about a game making itself more challenging by asking you to do challenging things. :/

    • @lyegm
      @lyegm 10 років тому +48

      & I think what you complain about his problem with upgrades systems is unfounded. Yes, doing something that is challenging of upgrades is ok but doing something challenging for the wrong reasons is not ok.
      Asking a spy in TF2 to "kill 5 enemies with backstabbing in 1 life" is challenging, asking a spy to "kill 5 enemies with your knife without backstabbing in 1 life" is challenging for the wrong reasons.

    • @Nixitur
      @Nixitur 10 років тому +8

      You seem to think that expanding "your tactics beyond what's sensible and reasonable" is a good thing, but I disagree.
      He's not complaining about the tasks being difficult, he's complaining about them incentivizing ways of playing the game that are not only suboptimal, but contrary to what the mechanics seek to achieve.
      If done well, upgrade tasks can subtly teach one how to play, often forcing the player to adapt and develop new tactics that will be useful in other situations. And they are often extremely challenging. The ones in The New Order sometimes do the opposite; they try to get the player to do nonsense.
      So, for novice players, tasks like those are misleading and for experienced players, they're aggravating.

  • @matman000000

    I think you're putting way too much emphasis on the perk system. It's not a major part of the gameplay, it's more a combination of minor upgrades and achievements. It's similar to challenges in RDR or MGS. You have to complete a pretty ridiculous task that tests your abilities and might otherwise seem illogical (kill a cougar with dynamite, skip all cutscenes to finish a game in 4 hours).
    And you really thought it wasn't fun to play? I thought it was one of the best action and FPS games in a long while. It's not trying to recreate old shooters' fast gunfights. It mixes the speed of old shooters with the more tactical approach of the new shooters. You have to move from cover to cover and quickly switch between offensive and defensive approach. It makes the combat feel more dynamic and like you're part of some epic movie shootout.

    I loved the writing in this game so much. It takes an inherently silly and OTT premise, technologically advanced mecha-Nazis with lasers, and juxtaposes it with empathetic characters that have believable motivations, thematically appropriate dialogue and behaviour and a sense of real relationship and camaraderie.
    And that juxtaposition never feels forced or jarring. Instead, the bombastic action and serious, often *intimate* characters give each other context and a sense of narrative texture and weight. Of course BJ is combat weary and suffering from fatigue, look at the kinds of things that you, as a player, make him do. Of course you find it satisfying to kill Nazis, look at the cruelty you've seen them inflict.
    I never felt like the tonal shifts rubbed up against each other in this game. I felt like they actually gave my actions a wider context that left them feeling more believable and grounded. This game managed to take the premise of robo Nazis on the moon and weave a surprisingly touching story with genuine drama and pathos into it.

    Your complaints with the game feel a little weird. They make sense in general, but... I never really felt like they were present in just about any of my time with the game. The speed was still fast enough to give me a feeling of rush and run & gun tactics, but cover still felt natural if you wanted to maximize your survival because... well duh, take cover a little bit. I guess if you wanted full 90's shooter Doom style run and gun, then its more of a matter of slow enemy projectiles which would kind of screw with the setting and aesthetics a bit. Still this isn't entirely stop and pop either, you can still run and gun a lot unless you really were doing it on Uber. I think the game had more in common with the older corridor shooters like on the half-life formula rather than super speedy "Doom clone" era FPS, and much like that formula cover or stop and pop wasn't necessary on moderate difficulty but smart to do. Meanwhile the unlocks...most of them came surprisingly naturally and I hear most others say its a cake walk to, even if it doesn't make a ton of sense. The overcharge stealth thing just seemed to just happen naturally, I remember when I even discovered that perk was active I only had to do one more kill like it. Knife throwing felt fantastic, and was pretty fun even if its not the best stealth kill. It just felt good... so yeah, using knives to get more knives just felt fun. The only thing I think truly gave me trouble was one or two of the explosive based perks, which I had to grind for around a checkpoint after I beat the game and was trying to get that extra last percentage. That, and one of the dumb cover based perks where I think it was absurdly high for a game where run and gun was actually possible again, unlike most shooters now.
    Actually that's the major reason I loved this game, its the type of shooter I've been yelling at the industry for ignoring (save for few exceptions like Insomniac's Resistance 3). Finally its an older style corridor shooter with a weapon wheel, health packs, enemy types, cheesy setting, and great gunplay (though more sillier weapons would have been appreciated to). Some don't think it was old school enough and would have preferred the full on Doom style of things, but either way the industry has been ignoring both that and the corridor shooters that came after that, and I'm really glad we got something like wolfenstein that challenged the norm right now. To someone like me that grew up around the HL influence of shooters, I was very happy and had a blast playing Wolfenstein rather than watching it or just looking for the story elements.

    I think you went about the unlocks the wrong way. They aren't there to force you to do something completely detrimental, they're there to encourage you to do something different in a situation where it's suitable, but you might not have thought to use it. Eg, getting the "kill 3 enemies without lifting the trigger" task should be saved for a place where you actually have 3 enemies clustered close together (in the opening mission they even have several areas where this is the case), and with the sliding one, you can slide towards cover, then quickly turn to shoot while doing it, making you look totally bad-ass. I do agree that the "Stealth kills while overhealed" one is nonsense, though.

      Linkenski It could be because, on PC, the resolution is much higher and you're sitting closer to the monitor, so it's easier to see the low quality textures. Where as, on PS4, the resolution is smaller (compared to what you can get on PC) and you're sitting farther away from the TV, so the low textures aren't that noticeable

      XavierJ61 There's always potential for innovation, its just about whether or not you've got the will power to take the risks. Heck even just choosing a weirder setting could lead to some cool stuff even if most of the mechanics stay the same. You might be able to make some cool games by simply turning the protagonists around a bit more, imagine playing as sentient aliens with powers alongside your weapons, or WW2 set from the axis side. That's just simple stuff, there's more extreme ideas out there for certain like the actual concept being made where its a music based FPS. I'd still also love to see an FPS that rips off and throws in a portal gun... yeah I know you can mod it into half-life, but a game completely built with that kind of thing in mind. That could be incredible.

    • @gamejames5839
      @gamejames5839 10 років тому

      daresmet automatic weapons have recoil when fired, however you can fire a fucking pistol without aiming down the sights and it will hit a enemy that is a mile away. Long story short moving and aiming doesnt change your accuracy.
      As for aiming being too difficult? I think there is a bit of a slow down sensivity while aiming down the sights, but compared to fc3 its far eaiser to aim and shoot.
      Not that you have to, you can just play it like a oldschool shooter and not aim down the sights.

    TL;DR You didn't actually give the game credit for all it's content and I feel that is kinda unfair.
    There is more then one way to play Wolfenstine between the polls of stealth and outright carnage, but in the review you focus in on run and gun style of gameplay alone? Sure you can go into a room guns blazing and kill every Nazi by sweeping 2 Assault rifle from left to right...or you can cut open a vent, sneak around back and quietly start taking them out one by one for a surprisingly satisfying stealth experience. Using the slide kill to move from a door to low-cover while remaining undetected, mind you.
    I didn't have the same technical issues either for the most part the game ran and played gorgeous on my unit at 60PFS and 1080p. I know others had a number of technical problems, which is inexcusable on the part of the Dev and seems to be a norm with AAA a games of later where a number of people can't play the game or play it well at least (I'm looking at you Black Flag!) with the game but I feel the thing that helped me the most was loading the game onto an SSD and having the recommended i7 probably helped. Then again I see several reviews from people on the steam page with i5s who apparently had an excellent experience.
    Lastly, I don't think it was far to call something a "weekend game" without actually listing all the features of the game such as what alternate choices yeild (all be it small) do in terms of change, the dialog Easter-eggs, like the one for flushing toilets every time you are back at "camp," and most egregious of all is you completely skip out on mentioning the enigma code portion of unlocks, which is some what of a game with-in a game.
    Personally I think it's also of note that we have a very physically tough main protagonist who is A: in no way degrading to women and B: actually has an internal dialog in a time when even the best shooters (like metro) still lean heavy on in-between level “mission briefings.”
    Ah well, it's not for everyone I guess.

    I thought this was a very average game.The juxtaposition between seriousness and camp was to the game's detriment overall. The stealth was garbage too. There were times when enemies didn't notice you right in front of them and other times when they'd notice you a mile away and everyone would be alerted to your presence.
