He was never OP, he was very good, but after his very first nerf he fell behind all the other mishimas and like RealBlackLAD said, it was a witch hunt, specifically from bad players, who don't understand how to play against a character that is good against mashers.
The character is also, very difficult to play, likely top 5 difficulty if not higher, and so all the new players who tried to play him fell off to play somthing easier and now you are only left with the more dedicated DvJ mains.
I love Devil Jin as my main, but it's even more annoying when you work hard and people call you carried cause they don't learn the match up.
The community has a permanent witch hunt on Devil Jin even after the current patch people still comment that he is op because they can't sidestep hellsweep.
I have the same opinion I had after the first patch. He is gonna get slowly nerfed into oblivion one patch at a time. Pray for a single compensation buff.
Yeah, it's always been like that. Doesn't matter how balanced he is, people won't be satisfied until he's 6 feet under.
It's ridiculous because people don't wanna realize you're not supposed to be able to side step everything. Block, hit them first? If I see someone only sidestepping their gunna have a rough time
Yep. Lots of uneducated string mains. Even some tournament players had some very embarassing takes on DVJ in T7.
That's how he ended up being bottom tier in they eyes of Knee and many who actually played DVJ and not just try him out and can't even do the wavu wavu into iWS2.
Nah I don't think he is getting much of anything in terms of balance changes for a while. I haven't seen any of these complaints. I'm more worried about Reina.
While I do agree that difficulty doesnt always correlate to popularity, even the hardest of characters have a nugget of simplicity that you can fall back onto. Lee for example, is notoriously hard, but he has fundamental tools and really basic poking and a fairly easy gameplan you can focus on, and difficulty is in combo execution. Devil Jin has NOTHING but difficulty. Their trying to give him setups, but his punishes put them flying across the screen, leaving you zero oki. His fundamental tools for poking are sh3t, you can't mid-check anyone in this game without losing your turn at range 0, which is a disaster in an aggressive game like T8. Kazuya has df+1 extensions that put him at neutral, not losing his turn, or a mid-mid that's safe with some pushback. He can still do some level of poking without being up in their face at -9 like in tekken 7
Devil Jin has Kazuya's problem in Tekken 7, but without the oki. He's still solid, but the amount of commitment you take to each and every move is annoying. Either minus 12, or launch punsihable, nothing in between.
He was never that strong to begin with, people overrated him and downplayed the true top tiers, now he is extremely nerfed and no one cares anymore
Goes to show you don’t play Tekken 8 lol he was overpowered before they nerfed him hence why everybody used to play him and now they’ve dropped him.
Like T5 I was op with devil Jin until I got to 5th kyu on medium difficulty yes 😭 T5 ai was reading my every input on like 5th kyu until I got asuka and brah in T5 she can literally infinity combo because almost all her moves connect and there was so little rest in between moves that it's insane

Even with how broken he was he wasn't even top5, I'm not saying he didn't need nerfs, but he is the character that has gotten the most nerfs and the harshest ones while other characters who have been stronger than him every single patch have gotten smaller nerfs with compensation buffs or just small adjustments

the nerfs are a double edged sword…I’m happy cause now people can’t complain send “carried messages, when I’m a specialist who’s played the character since T5…but also frustrating that’s he’s left with bad pokes, bad heat and bad gimmicks…took away what he didn’t need but didn’t give him back what he did need

People were over rating the shit out of him at the beginning of the game and they immediately started nerfing him instead the others that were considered top tier for some reason. The heat smash wasn’t even a big deal considering all the other broken ass moves where you didn’t need to spend your entire heat gauge for. The strongest characters want to conserve their heat, because that’s where their the strongest.
His gameplan just sucks.
He is more comparable to Kazuya now. Kazuya is really good at the wall but has weak poke game.
You’re wrong, people will still call you carried. You know why? Because people who say stuff like that usually do not understand the matchup, which no nerf will fix. Hints why people baby raged at king’s chain throw, despite the fact that they are extremely straightforward to counter.
We still exist but we struggle. A LOT

I have a lot of respect for people who play low tier characters and struggle and claw for every single win, just cos they like the character and think they're cool and so don't care that they could be winning more matches with a better character, they just like their character a lot and will do anything to get good with that character.
Like people who play the bear characters. Cos let's be honest it's cool as fuck to be playing as a grizzly bear or a panda, it's just kinda hilarious. And of course a Panda player has won a big tournament. But in general they're hard to do well with. But you're playing as a giant bear, how is that not cool?
It's like, if Fighters Megamix ever had become a big game in the fighting games community, I'd absolutely play as the Daytona car, always. It's so dumb, and the character is bad, it's hard to do anything with it, but you're playing as a fucking car, in a fighting game, and that's so hilarious that I can't not do it.
Or like in smash bros ultimate, playing as the piranha plant. It's so fucking dumb and funny, so why the fuck not?
The only reason to play Devil jin now is because of his flashy combos. There are no other reasons to play him it hurts me as Devil jin main since i started playing the games. He has mid damage, no pokes, and nothing that's broken. People really overrate him and forget that he is one of the hardest character in the game

when i was climbing and practicing with DVJ i always felt like i had to over work something just to get a bit of high damadge. the moment i tried normal Jin i felt so much better. i thought the nerfs wasnt so bad on DVJ but now, it hurts so much
Is fucking sad, I dont even understand why people thought he was a "boss character" and S tier. He was A+ at best. Everything you do is super fucking minus on block. Take the heat smash sure, but give us something ffs. Some frames at least.

His df1 nerf hurt his poking a lot but besides that it remains mostly unchanged correct me if I am wrong. He has more mids to work with this time around

I jumped shipped after the first nerf, i saw the writijg on the wall, i played devil jin in tekken 7 and played him in 8. Only good thing that came from the nerfs is i found a home in playing bryan now. Almost to blue ranks!
- Make his df1 -3 ob
- Reduce the start-up frames for his cd1+2 to i23 or less for a guaranteed b4 (just like how uf4 used to function)
- buff back his hellsweep range/damage like it was pre nerf
I think this would make the character much more viable not only in online play but also in the competitive tournament sphere.

Make his DF 1 2 both mids like in T7, bring back his 1+4 variant of low sweep, add some actual useful lows.

Devil jin being broken was so overrated. His heat smash overshadowed his entire kit. Because outside of heat he' alright. Yes he can still be a gimmick.

@renelopez3547 Jin beats Reina in lows. But overall, pressure and being aggressive, frame traps and long strings, movement, and being evasive, Reina wins.
@@renelopez3547Jin is definitely not better than Reina. His tracking is awful you can easily beat him by side stepping. I'd argue kazuya is better. He gets just as much damage and consistently. Only thing I'd say Jin does better is fwd fwd 2 and that's literally it. Jin doesn't have a 50/50 without heat and you have to be at the he wall for it to be a 50/50. His tracking is awful, side walk and launch literally everything he has that's not 2 tracking moves. Reina tho, she's so got damn plus I had to get her to Tekken king. She's not just the strongest Mishima possibly the current strongest in the game. She's nothing but a guessing game the entire time. Had the best pokes in the game and the best wall carry, pick ups, follow ups she's just very powerful.
Kaz is the worst. If you played him you'd know how awful he is to play. His combos are inconsistent and he has very low damage.
All he has going for him is oki and it got nerfed too

@HeyMomonia Yes, i have played Kaz. Kaz's heat is way better than Devil Jin. He has a lot more utility in heat plus his hellsweep gets better.

The devs just hate devil jin from the beginning of the games release devil jin was never op or broken at all except his heat smash they also went out of the way to nerf his hellsweep i think it was, but devil jin was never strong as people thought people just like to overreact he was no where to be seen at evo as well

No wonder he feels different, I played DVJ when tekken 8 was released last January, then stopped for a while and played FF7 Rebirth, just returned right now and fuck he feels so hard play and different than when tekken 8 came out.

Thank you for the video. Im new to tekken and haven’t had a lot of time to play tekken 8. I really wanted to main this character but it seems like it will be extremely difficult. I know you don’t have a crystal ball, but do you have any suggestions on characters that may be safe from blatant nerf patches that you can recommend? I was leaning towards learning jin, lili, nina, feng, or shaheen. Is jin good in this game?

Well Momodog did just make a video about DVJ post nerfs and says he is picking up another character for tournaments. He will keep playing DVJ in ranked/casual bc character loyalty.

something i think u should have mentioned is how his hellsweep combo damage set him apart then they nerfed it to the point where you might as well cd4,4

I only do cd4.4, what's the point in having 10 more damage just to get back in the neutral with his awful neutral tools, and when the opponent just recovers it all with a heat engager.
cd4,4 is 35 unrecoverable damage into +4 which makes df1 uninterruptible. But df1 is trash on block so it's not a huge W anyway
at least his wall pressure is strong through cd4,1+2 into b1+2 that spikes into guaranteed b4 or you wait and do another hellsweep/b4/ws2 mixup. In the open you can only do the rather odd to hit ws1,1 into MC4 combo which isnt a lot of damage. Though you could prolly do the MC,4,2 only ender and get a neat mixup situation that way but its all a lotta work in a game like t8

Been trying to learn him after I got used to normal Jin a bit, but been finding he's very difficult to learn (probably one of, if not the hardest character to learn I'd imagine out of all the T8 roster).
So game continuing to nerf his character certainly ain't helping.
It's so jarring going from jin to devil jin it just feels like you have to put in 10x the amount of work to win
@@Boogard it's the lack of lows that gets me with DVJ, Jin I got 3 viable lows to do damage with in neutral. Whereas with DVJ I got 2 that both leave me in crouch

When parches are released they tend to very extreme in tekken 8, and I believe it’s a combination of players not necessarily wanting to learn how to deal with characters, and the development team not completely understanding what to do with the game.
Well, he is defenetly worst mishima right now, other has better oki, better poking, better hellswips, better mid launchers, better lows, better heat utility, lower execution requirements, better neutral. Only thing that dvj has is damage (even that questionable) right now. They took away his only great move that makes him at least dangareous in neutral in heat, so, now nobody cares that u in heat. I will still play him cuz he has cool sound and visual design.
The previous nerf to heaven's gate (cd1uf) was unnecessary. Dvj still gets outdamaged by many characters.

The only way to win with it is to outplay your opponent by execution AND sidestep EWGF ... while they spam their gimmick and strings where you have to defend for your life with no pressure tool nor pokes
Honestly, even pre-nerf I only remember having a single ranked match against DJ. It seems he wasn't all that popular to begin with, or maybe it's because I'm playing in EU and he's more popular in other regions.
The predictable gimmicks and the nerfs hurt him. Plus the recently nerfed heat smash killed him even more.

Currently playing devil jin after getting Jin to raijin. Yea DJ is kinda hard not gonna lie but he’s also super fun and very satisfying to hit the laser combos.
i'm still a devil jin main, but i've started messing around with other characters to play as well as devil jin
It sucks because im trying to learn him and compared to reina(the other character i play) he is like so much harder. Like its taking me almost a week to feel comfortable to pilot him. Hopefully he gets buffs to his poke.
I recently switch from Jin than I also played on T7 to Devil Jin, because I fell like Jin way become too much op. And i've reach a better rank with DJ (Tenryu) than with the regular one , it sounds strange told like this, but the character corresponds me better probably. I think than his weaknesses apaer for a real issue when you're on higher ranks, like Blue ranks or above. The way that his demon paw range is nerf compare to Jin is freacking absurd, I hope they buff it in next patch instead of nerf him again
its crazy how as I started climbing with him it felt like a breeze and as the game has progressed hes slowly turning into the harder to use character than Kaz??? like HUH thats weird I still will play him just as I would Kaz (my usual ride or die) and will likely not drop him as I prefer the old school mishimas, jin/reina are too focused on the other parts of their kits now that they sorta lose the feeling of being one to me at least. I hope that AK will show up in some DLC soon cos I know im not gonna have Heihachi to play who I would say was my 3rd most played char in T7 behind Kaz and AK. Kind of a bummer too he is really unique and DVJ kinda always felt like he was meant to be the high execution high reward mishima but thats not really feeling like its the case anymore, Im sure Qudans is more heartbroken than any of us tho x)

I know I’m in the minority but I’ve grown to despise things like online usage player data solely because it makes too many people judge things at face value instead of actually trying or investigating things.

Yeah, he is total garbage now. I tried picking him up, but even his combos are super hard compared to other characters I play. I used the heat smash, sure, but now it's gone and there is zero reason to play DJ unless you love to suffer.

I share your take, I've been saying this for months. Just give him a less - df1 ob, that'd go a long way to improving his neutral. Legit he only has electric and 1 jab for neutral control. They're good, great even, but damn with so much evasive moves in t8 you get high crushed _alot_ and it just feels so bad. You're forced to play defensive in a game where offense is incentivized so much
tat's why as a dvj main I had to basically be a low parry master, and use his rehersal a lot, I've been embarassingly defensive cause of all the crap he had since the first nerf.
I am watching your first video , and To be honest I really enjoyed it , no doubt, but there is a advice like , you should use some amazing texts for important things like Move name etc....

The whole reason why I main Devil Jin is because he was basically T3 Jin Kazama. I hate Jin's new style as I felt his new style because it didn't felt like he punched as hard as he did before. Not to mention I thought it was incredibly awesome to combine both the Mishima & Kazama into his gameplay. It really felt like he was child of the Devil & a saint. Jin's Karate just felt like they wanted a Karate & it came to the expense of Jin's playstyle.
Which is why I'm incredibly excited to know if Jin will keep his fighting style at end of T8.
"I don't like character development" is all I heard in the whining about Jin's fighting style.
dvj arguably doesn't need safe mid launcher for his 50/50. yes, not having one makes him weaker, but in t7 he had hitconfirmable ws1,4 that knocks down for pretty good oki and under angle in which steel pedal will actually hit grounded, and he had bf2,3 as his main wallsplating mid. Dvj was exceptionally strong near the walls before the patch, but even after the patch (in now dead game) his wallcombo bf2,1,4 into oki is pretty good way to apply 50/50.
The only thing i would change in current dvj in current tekken 7 is make it so rage drive swaps sides near the wall, because you can't get any wallcombo with the way it works right now and the best option is just b4 or d1;
and his electric to scale less in combo, make it like Paul's deathfist and it's clean hit property.
Like, WGF does 20 damage at 100% scaling, but EWGF will do the same 23 damage, but starting at 115% scaling, and 2nd hit for 100%, third for 70% and you know the rest.
To balance it they should also reduce base damage for ff3,1.
His current most damaging staple is EWGF -> EWGF -> ff4 -> ff3,1~ff -> 2 -> f3+4 for 74 damage, while his easier and more reliable staple with single ewgf and different ender does 2 less damage. It's just not worth risking to drop the hard combo at 44~66 (unreliable ender, you either whiff f3+4 or get fff3 instead of ff3) damage and not doing easier one all the time for 72.
I hope some day t8 dies and ppl come back to t7 with custom servers, better matchmaking that actually shows the opponent before you accept the match (what is the point of asking whether i accept or not if i don't know who am i accepting), better netcode and community patches.
For those wanna play difficult Mishima, you know which character they gonna pick.

I went from Steve to Devil Jin recently and having usable, threatening lows has made him my highest ranked character in a single session lol. That said I do agree that he's probably the worst at high level, his gimmicks work well for purple ranks but once those options are shutdown in blue his neutral tools are kinda bad. As far as mids go, I've been using 1+2 and b1+2 a lot with moderate success, along with df1, df2, df4 and uf4. I don't really think his mids are that bad, the only one that really sticks out is df1 being -6 for whatever reason. Not having a safe mid launcher is a bit of a disappointment but it's not a dealbreaker. His range is so stubby though, and he's hella easy to step. Still having a significantly easier time playing DJ over Steve though, maybe because I used to main Heihachi.
It kind of sucks that in tekken 8 i’ve come to like this character only for devs to make him kind of bad. Not bottom tier but just underwhelming compared to the other mishimas or Jin. Df1 is horrible, and his mids are lacking. Fun character but the nerf to the heat smash kind of crippled him. Maybe Namco can fix it in the future, or make other moves of his stronger, still uncertain.
being not even mid is even worse than bottom, cause bottomm tiers at least have a rarity advantage, dvj, wasn't that rare so everyone now knows how to counter him, pllus he has a very short move list.
Well his psycho crusher was fixed and he was nerfed to hell. But he’s still cool in my book.
I'd say ruined, not really fixed, it became useless now really, embarassing to watch, he looks like he's pulling invisible wieghts, do to a pathetic range, it would've been enough to make it side steppable, and maybe a bit less damage, not that, plus it was only once per round, in a game were everyoone has at least 2 or 3 op and cheap stuff that they can use always.

DJ was my first main in Tekken 8. When they nerfed his hellsweep i left him alone pretty much. They kept nerfing him in what seemed like every update and I never looked back

I play devil jin a lot, but the things is i need to expand my character selections. And hoo boy if with devil jin i got high ranks

you can't, it's mind games at that point, When you jab and DVJ does MC 1 you float him out, if he does MC 2,2 and u jab u get hit by it, otherwise if you blocked that he's -14.
@@Alex-nt2fz the thing is though you can always block them, aside one heat smash, in mc he can't do any lows, so yoouu can't either do a rehersal, or block, he has one where you will be minus if you block, but then it's quite easy to win the 50 50, even if you fail, he has slow lows if he does that, enough time to block, or you continue to block, and if he grabs just break the grab.
They didnt just nerf the heelsweep damage in the first patch, they nerfed the range. So the character with two lows (that and back down 1) has both of them being on the weak side. No lows on strings either except the 10hit combo.
Even in the future with other nerf, i will still main him
My main was kazuya in tekken 7 and still is but when I saw devil Jin and all his new abilities, visuals, voice and overall more evil personality, they just killed it man he’s never been more badass so I had to play him. Kazuya is with heart my main but devil Jin is the best I can play with. He’s just sooo fun and cool to use! But yea he’s not the most broken he is difficult to play well with.

he just doesn;t have much option in neutral, his gimmicks dont work in blue ranks. losing the original df 1 2 i think really hurt him, coupled with the hellsweep range nerf
Personally i think one reason is be ause they took away some of his low punishers from tekken 7 thats not in tekken 8. He has alot of mid and highs that are punishable if blocked correctly. I have a really good DJ but i dont play him as much because everything you said is correct about him. Its get more difficult to do high damage because its like everyone knows how to counter certain moves. They do need to fix some of his move being safe on block and add certain moves back in. I want his kazama trip back
I really only play him cus of he is devil jin. Other than that, mourning crow 2 being used as a cross up when on the floor is crazy
I admit that I'm one of the people that was very salty about DJ when I started playing, and this colored my attitude to the character so much that even after the nerfs my immediate gut reaction to DJ is a tired "Oh god" whenever I see him. To somebody who started with T8, DJ was incredibly oppressive and his heat smash in particular felt cheap and overpowering.
Getting some context from this video, I do hope they don't nerf him any further and instead try to adjust him into a decent place. Nobody deserves to have their main completely gutted just because people have a bad opinion from previous patches were the character might have been overtuned.

As a Jack specialist, it's interesting, but not surprising he's still rarely played. He's much stronger and has depth I CRAVED back in T7, but he's still so different from everyone else despite being relatively simple. He's easy to pick up still but finally has the spice I desired. Jack-8 is easily my favorite fgc character, period.
Small correction: By the end of t7 Devil Jin UF4 got nerfed to no longer knowckdown so it being an heat engager and wall splatting is technically a buff compared to last t7 patch

He was honestly fine and didn’t need to be touched, now we will never see a Mishima in Tournaments.

its really sad because he was the only one i was looking so much forward specially the changes and difference between tk7 dvj and tk8 dvj well it did as expected on release i was so happy my boi is like what they say "S tier" but gradually i noticed like why arent people really talking about dvj like hes not even a threat to play against
this is why i kind of compared him to tk7 and might even said that he might be worse in tk8 than tk7 in terms of the game's environment not just a direct comparison

3:18 bro.. NOBODY has a heat smash that you can side step like that. They nerfed that shit TOO HARD
- top 3/5 hardest characters (hardest mishima imo)
- his identity has ALWAYS been consistency and well-roundedness, he now has the worst selection of mids i've ever seen in a tekken game
- worst mishima tools, worst EWGF, worst FF2 (thats a mishima tool now ig...) hellsweep barely stands out now, as its oki is dead
- heat gimmicks are poor, not enough ways to use it
- mourning crow is a complete gimmick with skewed risk reward (who risks getting launched from their heat smash on block? from BOTH mixup options?
- he still has no low that is low commitment and effective enough to estimate someone's willingness to duck
- CD1+2 is a kekW move, you can't make it good, but its otherwise pure bad
- consistency issues
- everyone knows the MU even as low as red ranks, due to being overpopular, overhated, and a mishima.

I think Reina definitely has the worst EWGF of them all. Hers are insanely inconsistent to combo with even on bigger characters.

I want to play him and use him however he keeps getting nerfed and the game keeps getting nerfed to accommodate that. It feels bad. Just let the character be top tier if you gonna do what you did to Jack 8 and Leroy
When I get crazier with him I will definitely main DJ at one point. He’s always so fun to play.
He is definitely a ton of fun
His hellsweep being a launcher annoys people and give them the delusion that it's broken. His high combo damage adds to this too. Most people who fight against him don't really see his bad neutral, and just see the launching low, and high combo dmg, and basically concludes that he's top tier already. Not to mention, outside of hellsweep, he really has shitty lows (db2 and d3), since generic d4 was universally nerfed. Bamco usually just follows the common consensus so i doubt he's gonna get any significant buffs in the future.
At least you can now walk his heat smash… still so annoying to fight those people spamming this backfly move… always gets me ^^
Got him to Fujin but as the nerfs started to roll in and Ranked is all broken characters I stopped playing him in ranked. Not gonna lie, I could probably work hard and get him to Bushin and may be Tekken King but it wont be a fun playing him.
Picked up Bryan instead who is also execution heavy but at least you get rewarded for it and he is fun to play.
Ive mostly been a devil jin main since tekken 5 but there are others I'm halfway decent with i just got tekken 8 a month ago im still trying to get used to his new moveset i didn't know he was nerfed this bad the devs must not like him, its a shame too since it seems like Tekken 8 will be his last main line game i finished the story mode and i didn't like the tail end of it getting rid of both devil jin and kazuya is a bold move
As a Zafina Main, I had great pleasure going into manual Tarantula vs DJ's in Heat and Watch 80% of them Auto Pilot Heat Smash and fly over me followed by geting a TRT 3 in the Face.
Only about 20% of DJ's (if that) actually paid attention and would adapt and not auto pilot that BS.
New Jin is a masterclass in tekken design. Not surprised people switched to him
I dropped DVJ for Paul recently. Way more rewarding for less effort. I hope they give DVJ buffs in the future so I can play him again

I prefer devil jin to be weakened because he still gotta play clean neutral, and traditional mishma style. loved the heat smash changed since i never really used it, the command grab from heat and u/f 3+4 are his money buttons honestly so it didn’t effect me personally. I reached Tekken king yesterday with him so im still rocking with him regardless because i been having fun with him.
If you have fun with a character that's almost that really matters
