The high pitched vocal is artistic choice since she is playing the part of a ghost, Cathy, who has come back to haunt her lover.
The more you hear of her the more you will appreciate how talented she is.

It's even more impressive when she sings it live, playing piano and still hits everything perfectly.

You mean like me, you like her eyes? Or were you also one of us 70s kids who all had a Frank Spencer and Kate Bush impersonation? I know I did.

It's worth mentioning, that Kate Bush did that (complicated/challenging) singing in one take!
She was 19 years old at the time of release, and in January 1978, this song kicked ABBA from #1 in UK for 4 weeks.
44 years later, she got another #1 with a 37 year old song. Her third album "Never For Ever" was the first #1 in UK
with a self-penned album from a female singer. Fun fact: There's even a book "Waiting for Kate Bush" (2004),
that describes in some chapter with many words, why "Wuthering Heights" defies every songwriting rules and
could in no way be a success, e.g. with that epic guitar solo at the end. Ian Bairnson, who did it, sadly passed away
last year (not the only one). This was Kate's first single, which was another drama, as Kate Bush insisted to have
this (unusual) song as a single, as she was convinced, that it works. EMI didn't think so, but Kate (19 years old!)
vehemently insisted on it. Not the last time, she had a clash with managers, but in this case, she got it done!

The song was inspired by the last 5 minutes or so of a movie, that she saw on TV, called "Wuthering Heights"
after a novel by Emily Brontë (1847), who shared the birthday (not the birth year) with her. She was intrigued
by the love story, especially the part, where the ghost of "Cathy" (Kate Bush's nickname by the way) knocks
on the window of "Heathcliff", begging to let him in. This explains the ghost like video to the lyrics...

@@shockwavereact I've given you some hint last video (RUTH), there are many more, if you wish. Kate Bush is a top British icon, honored as CBE, several songwriter awards (e.g. Ivor Novello Award) and 2023 Inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. She made way for many later (esp. female) artists and is a model for an independent musician, that produces and promotes all her music by herself (not alone, but she is in charge). Name by many as major influence, adored by people like Johnny Rotten and Big Boi, worked with David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Prince, Jeff Beck, Gary Brooker, Nigel Kennedy and more, played with Midge Ure, Pete Townsend, Phil Collins, Nick Karn, and (no joke) Rowan Atkinson. In 2014, she had 22 shows in London (only second live tour after 1979), and I was collecting information, who was there (esp. celebs), and you won't believe it, but whoever had good taste was there... ;-)

Ha! I've found it! That wasn't easy... It's the bottom quarter of this article/blog after October 1st, 2014. Sadly UA-cam deletes my link again and again, if I post it here (although it's quite an easy link!)...

Kate Bush has SO many wonderful songs to explore - and it's never a straightforward story that most songwriters would write about! Might I suggest "Wow", "Army Dreamers" & "Breathing" :-)

Kate was 'discovered' by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour who helped get her a contract. You should try The Man with the Child in His Eyes, Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love....loads of great songs.

She's playing a ghost from a famous Victorian novel, a young woman haunting her lover after a passionate, doomed affair. Hence the very high register in which she sings, the exaggerated facial expressions. Its meant to be creepy and mesmerising. This was a massive hit, was number 1 in the charts.
Britain has a long tradition of gifted, eccentric geniuses, so the public is quite flexible when it comes to musicians. So you get songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, I am the Walrus, and Wuthering Heights. Not in the normal pop categories, yet widely embraced.

Cathy Earnshaw has come back from a different ehthereal plane to torment the soul of Heathcliff, her friend and lover (based on the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte)

A few additional points of interest about "Wuthering Heights".
In order to get a feel for Cathy Kate read part of the book, interestingly when she did get round to reading all of it after finishing writing the song, Kate noticed certain phrases from parts that she hadn't initially read had ended up in the Lyrics anyway.
Kate said that when she sang this song, she was Cathy, she was channelling the character.
"Wuthering Heights " became a worldwide smash hit. Hitting number 1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and the UK. It was at least a top 10 (or better) in nine other countries. A performance that would only be surpassed in 2022 by "Running Up That Hill".
Why did it make such an impact? I think that the song was so different to anything else in the singles chart, from Kate deliberately singing in a very high register in order to represent Cathy as a ghost, to the very unusual structure of the song (Kate later described it as circular), together with very different key changes and timing changes.
Kate is self-taught, never attended music school, meaning that she was never exposed to musical theory. When Kate writes a song, she's only interested in creating something that's nice to her, something that can convey the feeling/message that she's trying to pass onto listeners.
Kate has a very high-quality discography, which I'm sure that you will have great fun exploring.

While you mention Kate's high register, it's noteworthy to say, that she did a new version (or cover) of "Wuthering Heights" in 1986 (8 years later) with a matured voice and lower register. I personally prefer the version of "The Kick Inside" (1978), but we can have them both!

The following video explains the very unusual key changes that are in Wuthering Heights, since Kate is self taught these combinations are purely instinctive on her part. Very few songwriters fall into this category. Genius is a word that's overused but it's very fitting when applied to Kate Bush.
