This song was sung at my son Ross's funeral. He died aged 24 years old in a road traffic accident. He played Rugby for Wisbech Grammar School and Wisbech Town. I think it would be nice for pupils that played for schools and towns that didn't make it to adult life to be acknowledge in some way. I received no acknowledgement for the commitment my son gave to his school rugby team or the town he played for.
I am so sorry that you have lost your son. I am sure the people of Wisbech simply did not understand how this would be so important to you. I cannot begin to imagine your pain. RIP Ross .
I can't speak for anyone else but as a 50 year old black man I hope England fans continue singing this song. I'm well aware of its historic meaning and its one of the reasons my late mother who came to Britain in the 1950s enjoyed watching games with me. I've been a rugby fan since playing at school in the 80s, to me rugby has always been inclusive and about unity, something we all need during these difficult and divisive times. I don't know anyone who is or has ever been offended by its use so to see so many comments claiming its black people who want a ban is disappointing but as mentioned above I'm only speaking for myself. I can't figure out who wants it banned, I thought with my limited knowledge of BLM that the movement promoted equality and unity. The original message seems to have been highjacked by those who want the exact opposite and from the derogatory comments I've read they seem to be achieving their aim. Shame.
The fact that a song about emancipation, written by a slave, has become the anthem of hope and unity representing our multicultural team and nation is incredible. Far from banning it, it should be the national anthem. We sing this to remember the horrors that England inflicted, but use it’s message of emancipation to free ourselves from the past and create a brighter future together.
England didn't inflict any horrors, British traders did, but no slaves were in Britain since circa 1066. Britain managed to force the western nations to stop the slavery trade as it was abhorrent to our people using the power of it's navy. The first nation to attempt and succeed in this quest.
Honestly I am just as shocked as you this song represents what our ancestors went through now the British are claiming it typical they always steal what we have typical glory hunters
The song was written by Wallis Willis, a choctow native american, because the Red River rimandes him the Jordan River of the Bible. Than was used by black slaves.
How is it racist?? It's a beautiful song. People could/should be thinking it's meaning is different in different cultures and centuries. I never knew where the song came from. Now I know i have learnt something knew. Still a beautiful song.
@Ni Ra ha ha. What is sad is that some people truly believe that tho. There is 1 race the human one. I love rugby due to the united fan/support that you get you can sit next to a rival fan and have a great time.
Thanks buddy, it’s the British black community / perhaps the black rugby fans who will ultimately decide if the song is OK. I suspect it’ll be an extreme minority who would have a real issue with it but it’s fair that we at least check if this is the case.
OH MY GOD ELLA STOP BLOWING ME UP EVERY SINGLE TIME I HEAR YOU SING!!! God, this girl is just too much. I get goosebumps every time she opens her mouth. She`s so fucking insane...i wish she had more recognition.
Just sang this song at a dear grandaunt's funeral. it was her favourite song. it was so beautiful as we sang this song when we sent her off on her final journey. Also, heard about the original story behind this song. To the brave souls that believed in freedom and the kind souls that help to set them free, I respect you.
As an Englisman this soothes me when I hear the crowd sing it during tense games. It gave me goosebumps when I sang it with my countrymen at Twickenham. I like to think that Rugby Union is the most inclusive sport in the world, after all, the man who bought the game into the modern era was a black Polynesian winger - he was widely regarded as one of the best ever. If you think this song is inappropriate for a crowd favourite of England because of its origin, fair enough, that's your opinion. But please don't be so quick to take something away that means a lot to so many as well.
This is what the original song is making reference to. Psalms 68:17 [17]The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. Mark 13:26-27 [26]And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. [27]And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Isaiah 11:12 [12]And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
This song is sung by the lovely Ella Eyew but who was the person who composed it. Wallace Willis, a native American slave who was freed. Its a hymn sung by many men and woman
England for me it is a home away from home as my dad for 4 years was working at London and during this time I was literally living between Athens(Greece) and London. God bless England ❤❤

Ok, no one is going to believe me when I say this but… I was actually one of the backing voices for this song cover. Here’s my story… Back in 2015, there was a competition between different singing groups to participate in this song. Basically all that the groups had to do was perform their own version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Well, I was a part of the Gloucester Gang Show which was one of the few groups selected to take part in this cover of the song. Despite the fact that I was really young at the time (I think I may have been only 9 years old) I was one of the five from our group who was randomly selected out of a hat to go (they only had limited slots which is why the whole group didn’t get to go, just wanted to clarify) The actual experience of recording the song is still one of the coolest things I have ever done. We went to THE Abbey Road Studios and recorded the song there (which coincidentally sparked my love for The Beatles and Pink Floyd) and we also got to meet Ella Eyre. I can’t find the video anywhere but there was a promotional video for this song which featured the different groups on the day we recorded and in the video you can see me making Ella laugh at something (I couldn’t tell you what though 😅). Either way, this moment will forever stick out to me as one of the coolest and most memorable days of my life. In the years since, I have lost the ability to sing (my voice got deeper and I no longer had the passion to really train my deeper voice) but this will forever remain as a nice little archive for me Anyway, I just thought I’d share my story because some of you may find it interesting. And if any of you know of that promotional video I spoke of, please tell me where to find it as I don’t know where to look
