Having walked to the crease with his side 213-4, Andrew Flintoff struck a typically aggressive hundred and propelled England's total up beyond 400. It set the platform for England to take the lead in the series for the first time, and head into to the final Test at the Oval needing only a draw to win the Ashes.

Just like Stokes. Both the guys don't have exceptional stats. But stats doesn't define them. Their impact defines them.
Stats may show a performance of a player but ststs will not show the ability and talent of a player

Freddie will always be remembered for his power, but his cover drives off the back foot were a delight to watch.
Can you imagine if back then he used a modern chunky bat, that wormwood bat looks like a toothpick!

I reckon the wink was in acknowledgement that Warne had him absolutely dead plumb LBW when he was in single figures.

The extended applause that Freddie received when he first reached his 50 & eventually the century show what this knock meant for the spectators. His superhuman allround performance backed by a well balanced England team saw them tame their nemesis. This is stuff legends are made of. Didn't miss one single ball of this unforgettable series.
That 2005 Ashes win was very very special for them..
It wouldn't be an Exaggeration to say that Our 2011 WC win was what 2005 Ashes win is to them...

There has been a good few great allrounders in the 50 plus years I have been watching cricket, perhaps the best being Gary Sobers, a great batsman who could ball both pace and spin and the amazing thing was when balling spin he could release the ball and then dash to the batsmans end before the ball reached him and keep wicket to his own delivery!

As an English cricket fan, I also love great players of all nations, many have given us great all-rounders over the years the great Kapil Dev from India, several from Pakisthan with perhaps Imran Khan the best, from New Zealand Richard Hadlee, several from South Africa with perhaps Kalis the best and from West Indies Gary Sobers. I have selected from players around in my time watching cricket, 1963 until today, 2021. I cannot bring to mind any great Aussie allrounders as players like Kieth Miller and Richie Benaud were before my time.

He himself was almost certainly the cause of his injuries due to poor fitness and being overweight for much of his career.

But he *DID* have those injuries primarily due to being unfit and overweight for much of his career. And the other reason Flintoff will never be a great is he was not very strong mentally like Jaques Kallis for example. Sure, odd moments of brilliance and a big crowd pleaser, but no true consistency/longevity. Had he been mentally tough and took his fitness seriously, he would have been a great.

I’d pick big Freddy any day over Stokes in my 11. Stokes is more of a 3rd seamer, but a quality batsman nonetheless. Freddy was a beast when it came to monster hitting and could bowl at 90mph effortlessly. Freddy gets the edge as many would consider him a frontline bowler. Who could forget that over against Punter.
Imagine if Flintoff could have stayed physically and mentally fit from 98-02
