- I just watched The Silent Hill Transmission on 5/30/24 and I needed to confess my Silent Hill sins. This is the only way I can atone for my crimes. Consider this video a pyramid-shaped punishment-dealing entity. My opinions deviate greatly from most of the Silent Hill community, but I have a valid reason. The reason: a cool render of Silent Hill Homecoming I got at a horror convention. That's the basis for my bias.

I think they should've gone for remaking the first one instead. Taking SH2 out of the PS2 just doesn't sound good in my head.
I think they are waiting to do 1 after, probably because 1 goes into 3. I don’t know, it’s pretty odd I agree.
Remaking 1 is a much taller order IMO. Larger array of enemy types, including several flying ones. Far more environments to explore. More characters in the plot. Less familiarity with the general audience, especially since Harry's character doesn't appear in the movies and the monsters were most pulled from 2. The SH2 remake was purely business first.
But taking Silent Hill 1 out of PS1 does..?
Silent Hill 2 is more popular than 1 for a reason - it's better in literally every way. Especially the story.
It's being remade to tell the story to a new generation. No wonder they would choose their best work for that role.
Someone with time, caring and attention to detail as an art director could put all 4 HD remakes on a disk from the PS/PS2 games.
I agree that some games cannot be remade. Like the Wipeout games for the PS, I love them, but the restrictions on the games graphics and the art direction cannot be translated now. Even San Andreas doesn’t look good with realism it’d need a more stylish art style to help its cartoonish visuals and gameplay today.

I want to be optimistic, but I dont trust Bloober Team to respect how subtle the original story is after the handholding storywise in Short Message. That and I'm almost impressed at how much they watered down Maria's design and as a result fucked up what her character is supposed to be.
I was just about to agree with you, but old Maria wasn't exactly a super model. She had a little tuft of baby fat and her clothes were (by today's standards) pretty modest. I was more concerned by Maria talking about how much more "empty" the hospital felt compared to the rest of the town. Gah, that's some Bloober writing right there.

She's supposed to be James's ideal Mary brought on by pent up sexual frustration and resentment at Mary's condition, so her being in a pretty boring dress and jacket isnt as satisfying to me

The original design wasn’t some wildly provocative thing tho. James isn’t some sex crazed maniac. He’s a normal dude who wanted to bang his wife and couldn’t anymore. Maria’s outfit wasn’t that crazy a skirt and a shirt with her waist showing. Thats not wildly provocative. The provocative part was the way she talked to james. Which is all that really matters
I have to hand it to the team, they were able to convince me the game might he half decent, despite some gameplay choices.

On the topic: I started playing SH2 on emulator not so long ago and made it to the apartments building or a little further, so, basically, just in the beginning of the game. And yesterday's trailer felt like it's showing me something I shouldn't know yet, like this woman from graveyard is apparently a major character, but there wasn't really anything I could make sense of. So I think it's not too revealing for people like me who didn't play the original
I still don’t understand why Konami didn’t contract out Bokeh Game Studio for a Silent Hill revival, with Akira Yamaoka scoring all the music and Masahiro Ito doing new character designs.
Well to be fair Bokeh is working on a new game which is more interesting imo.

@@HikikomoriMedia You're still wishing they make the doge ending cannon and that it has special End Game Plus a la Third Birthday with James taking on hoardes of aliens as Harry Mason comes and gets him to prevent his own future death in SH3 while Shattered Memories Cheryl shows up to help them with her new power of altering memories or something, while Harry uses his katana similar to Mondo, Cheryl now having the beam saber and fighting like Travis, as if this scenario is straight out of the FF7 Remake dev room?

I’m on the opposite side give me more remakes. Silent hill especially so much shoulda been done with silent hill that wasn’t. Having the original creature designer coming back to really get a second look at his work is awesome
@@tristenatorplaysgames6833 I would rather see him come up with brand new original designs! They're super talented creative people, let's see them do some new work. I particularly don't find the PS2 generation really benefits a ton from remakes. While graphics have advanced a ton since that gen, gameplay innovations really haven't, just playing the original is a similar experience.
@@Gahoole ps2 benefits a lot. A ton of those games still have like laracroft as pointy titted. Ps2 games did push the graphics I look at the old re games and jesus christ its like someone smudged the hell outta my screen. What isn’t needed is ps4 remakes like the last of us did
@@tristenatorplaysgames6833 nah you're thinking of ps1. Ps2 games generally look decent as long as you are using a good emulator/upscaler or playing on a crt. Besides minor graphical upgrades aren't as significant as the complete gameplay overhauls of say re2 remake or something right. Those games had their visions of what gameplay would be limited by the hardware (for better and worse) whereas a ps2 game plays pretty similar to how a ps5 game does barring like loading screens and autosave stuff
I've never played any of the SH games (except A Short Message, but do we really count that?) so my impressions don't mean much, and I've not been paying a lot of attention to the new ones. They do seem to be in a strange spot though, seeing as between ASM, the tv show thing, 2 remake, and f (if they remember that exists), they're all developed by different teams (with some minor overlap between certain figures, like Yamaoka's music), and going in different directions. On a certain level, it sort of raises questions about what it means to be a series when the quality/appeal of one isn't much of an indicator of the very next one or the one immediately before. But like I said, that's just an outsider's perspective on the matter.

I actually really loved Silent Hill Homecoming. I played all endings to that game back in 360 to get all the achievements. I’ll do the same for the remake. I’m super excited for it. It really is perplexing why UA-camrs decided to go the route of crushing the game. To be honest I’m glad they chose a newer developer as the team silent hill were in a mediocre stage with the limited technology and made the second game quirky unintentionally which made it so good. Keeping that element with bloober is safer than theoretically if capcom took on the project. If they make it like the re remakes it would change everything in a bad way. It would be completely different and not feel like silent hill. I think bloober team did a great job.

Said it before, saying it again: Purists will never be satisfied and everyone knows SH2. Go the FF7R route of going balls to the wall different and stupid.
I would tend to agree on your points about SH Silent Message and them just trying things. Cause when you try things and fail, you can at least see what works and what doesn't, and with that game it's very clear what works. Incredible environmental design and pretty interesting monster designs. Kick the monumentally juvenile writing to the curb in favor of actual deep, emotional, and adult writing again. The whole "whoa I'm super depressed cause some meanies at school called me a poopy-head" writing just uh.... doesn't really do it for me, lmfao.
I think the game looks great so far. Can’t wait to play it.

They should remove that stupif note they added to the very beginning of the game that says something like "youre only here to look back" like its hinting so close to spoiling the game ots unreal
nice little analysis, pretty much agreed with everything, i hope bloober team won't hold your hand throught the story to understand it, the vagueness and simbolism are some of the main aspects of sh2..going with low expectations too though

I'm losing a lot of faith I once had for this to be a faithful remake.
The fact that they thought it necessary to consult with an outside firm on how to handle the psychological trauma the game heavily dives into tells me it's gonna be watered down, if not censored.
It's not gonna be a day 1 purchase for me if at all.
A great point you made was "This game was not specifically made for me."

Konami and Blobber Team wanna make money and sell to a massive audience and completely understand that. I also realize I can find something to enjoy in this new rebirth of the franchise and I think this light hearted way is best to look to the future.
I loved Homecoming when it first came out, I just can't really enjoy it now because I feel it's not as smoothe of an experience as 1-3. But it's not bad and it's great for new fans who just need to scratch that Silent Hill itch.
I loved Origins&Downpour. I wished they'd port Book of Memories to PS5 just so I could experience it.

Love your content Hikiko and I hope your channel grows. I haven't played SH2 but I did own the original and The Room (which is my favourite). I feel quite conflicted about the SH2 remake because I think I should experience the original first.
Silent Hill 1 deserved a proper remake before.
You know the last Silent Hill game I played after playing all the rest was the first one. First I played was 3 (Oh wait I played Rigins in the somewhere)then 2 and 4. Later on the western made titles. And I love 2 but love the first one more. A remake of the first would have been better. My biggest gripe is how clean monster skin textures are they look just bad.
Hell yeah, I wanted to know what to think about this remake, so this video will come in handy

Silent Hill ascension gave us the sh orgy no one asked for. I wish they had remade the first sh game, but I am looking forward to the sh2 remake. I think too many people are overly protecting over sh2 and they shouldn't be. At the end of the day it is just a game and if it ends up sucking the original still exists to play.

This game seems like a desperate attempt to appeal to everyone in a bid to reach the most people sales wise, thus it will appeal to no one and ultimately crash and burn imo. Looks way too clean and crisp in some places. Fog effects give way to complete clarity of your surroundings the moment they even slightly recede or dissipate. Lacks washed out look and feel. Not as dirty as I think it could or should be. Models are off and seem to fundamentally misunderstand the point of the setting of Silent Hill and how it presents itself to the person unlucky enough to enter the town.
Watched the gameplay and, while it being clunky isn't necessarily a bad thing (given that James isn't really a stereotypical action hero), it was rather slow and tedious to a degree where it seems the whole point will be to completely AVOID combat at all costs, which is hard to do when the developers seemingly puts you in walled off rooms or narrow hallways and forces you to confront almost every enemy we've seen so far in gameplay trailers. I don't think this game will do well. Not well enough to bring the franchise back to prominence. I wasn't really moved by any of the "frights" or "horror" I saw on screen. Game lacks soul is the best way I can describe it. I think this harkens back to what was said earlier.
In an attempt to try and tone down the scares and atmosphere of SH2 in the remake they are making an experience that appeals to no one. The hardcores will avoid it cause its not doing enough in their eyes to to be faithful to the look and feel of the original, and "normies" certainly wont pick it up because its horror, and horror has always been niche. I know they look on at the sales numbers of RE remake titles with envy, wanting that for their franchise, but they fundamentally seem to misunderstand the differences between the two IPs.
SH is psychological horror that goes out of its way to eschew combat and facing the enemy head on. You are instead, expected to explore and solve puzzles to obtain key items needed to progress the story, but combat is generally a zero sum game that you are encouraged to use as only a last resort. Where as RE is very much about taking the enemy head on if you have the resources for it. If you can save up on bullets, grenades, shells, etc you can take on any challenge, and even engage in a litany of mandatory boss fights paced throughout most of the franchises mainline titles. The majority of which culminate in your player character being loaded for bear, and given a freaking rocket launcher to finish off the big bad. Action has more wide spread appeal. The RE games arent even remotely as scary or atmospheric as the SH games. Thats why they've always consistently outsold SH as an IP. None of the changes Bloober Team or their Executive Overlords mandate to change will fix that. I am very worried for the state of this remake and wont be making a purchase until the verdict is in.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the gameplay shown. Expectations are in the gutter, and Bloober/ Konami are already saying "modern audience," which usually shuts down my interest. But, there isn't nearly as much background chatter as I was expecting. The story looks mostly the same. It's like taking a sip from a fast food cup that's been sitting in your car and being satisfied it still tastes a little like tea instead of just melted ice.
I mean the games came out 20 years ago we need a modern audience. We need change from the original. (This coming from a real silent hill fan)

I'm just going into this game with the mindset that it could be a reimagining like shattered memories. If it's good then great, if it's not then on to the next game. That's the great thing about videogame reviews I can at least get informed before purchasing. I'm not gonna sit here and have a meltdown over a remake not being a 1 for 1 recreation of a game I ALREADY PLAYED! I still loved RE 2 remake and it got rid of the Zap system and tons of other changes. Also you're REALLY overselling the voice acting from the original game, it's awful but that's part of the charm cuz it gave the games an uncanny valley vibe. Horror games back in the day had terrible voice acting. Idk I think it's too much nostalgia on your part.
I think im going to turn subtitles on and turn voice overs down to 0 personally i want to enjoy the ambience of the town without james comenting on everything he sees. Its such an anoying modern trope
Great video. Love hearing your thoughts. James sounds great but mabye all the talking humanizes him a bit too much? He's SUCH a weirdo in the original and that really added to the story for me.
Maria looks wrong, she's supposed to be seductive, mysterious and a little menacing.
We get nothing like that in the remake, she's bland.

Also: James is far too expressive and emotional, he should have a deadpan look.

Do you really believe Bloober attempting to improve the performance by making James more expressive is a negative? The original game had James displaying a range of emotions, but people seem to have forgotten. He expresses confusion at his surroundings. He lashes out at Laura in the hospital. He flirts with Maria a couple of times. He's apologetic when she confronts him in the basement of the hospital. He cries out when he thinks she's dead! He calmly tries to diffuse Eddie's murderous rage. He mopes in the Hotel, when he realizes what he did. He's far from deadpan in the original. Maybe you're confusing him with Henry!?
I really don’t like Angela’s face in this. But the voice acting sounds excellent. The environments look excellent. There are a couple of things I don’t like. But overall I’m really happy with what I saw. Not even gonna look at it again now until launch.
The way they modified James, Bloober Team for the love of God, please change Angela's face!

She looks fine in some scenes that have better lighting, but there were a few cuts where the character model was looking low detail. I'm not sure who's cutting the trailers over at Bloober, but I hope that's not the finished scene.
This game is a joke. The animations are amateur as hell. Unpaid modders do far better in their spare time.
This game wants to be the Resident Evil remakes so badly, but Bloober Team are nowhere near as competent. I also believe Konami is probably doing very little to help with the project and letting Bloober take the loss if it doesn't go over well.

The remake to silent hill has really made me dislike the so called fans of it. You can't make em happy. You wanted more silent hill so they gave you a free game. You didn't like it and then ask for more silent hill. The franchise was better when it had a very little fan base.

Sorry but I refuse to support this release. Silent Hill ended with 4 and anything after that was not up to the mark. PT was the last chance but Konami screwed it all up. This game reeks of DEI and corporate desperation.

If more people think like you, gamed would be in a much better place. My expectations are very low when it comes to modern games, so i won't get disappointment every time.
The compromise for the SH2 remake would be to have questions at the beginning of the game similar to ‘Metal Gear Solid 2’ to determine the play style.
If someone has never played a SH game before you get the game with the “modern audience” play style and housekeeping. If they have played the game before the game is more tank-controls, fixed camera, no plot or voice changes keeping it close to the original.
They’ve already made the assets so they could do that. But when have modern gaming studios ever listened to good ideas?
In other words, you propose to make two games: a remake and a remaster. They'll never do that

I'm more hopeful than I was compared to the last two reveals (the combat one that looked tone deaf and the initial reveal before that) but I'm still on the fence.
Mostly because of Konami rather than bloober being incompetent. At the very least, the remake will be playable which might not sound like much but compared to other remakes like RE2 and 3Make, I can possibly see myself playing through it more than once.
Also yeah, Homecoming was never really terrible for me. Not great. Clunky but playable. Its got a spot but mostly for personal reasons. I'll still die on the hill maintaining Downpour being HOT garbage.

I get it. We all want to give this poor, wheelchair bound series another go at running a marathon it came 4th in. We'll try one more time, maybe it can sell more than SH1 thanks to platform parody, advertisement and easy of access.

This must be a really nerve wrecking thing to remake. On one hand there are the boomer autistics who want a shot for shot remake. And there are the zoomers who want a resident evil combat game. I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of Bloober team designers.
Also KONAMI is totally out of touch. All they had to do was just release the original on Steam and let the modders finish the rest. SH2 extended edition mod is perfectly playable now.
Anyway I hope this remake gets successful and it won't take Bloober team down. Although I think the game will open on a MIXED rating in the beginning but hopefully it'll reach it's audience.
I'm still pretty hyped for the game tbh. Just being able to experience the SH2 universe with like RE2 remake style gameplay and graphical fidelity just looks sick. If it turns out to be a turd, it's not like the original game is just gone forever, so there's that lol.
I'm actually glad Silent Hill Ascension exists because the story and acting is hilariously bad. I'm actually invested in it because the story is so batshit and told poorly. The only actual good part is the music.

I dunno man,after the short message and that weird ass web series, mabye SH shouldn't return,Konami seems to be under the impression that silent hill is a big money making franchise which, i dont think is a great way to go about it, sometimes dead is better.....i would have much preferred a good remaster of the orginal games instead of a remake so more people can experience the orginal game...

As soon as I heard they were hiring a consulting company to "tone things down for modern audiences" I lost interest. Seeing the trailer now, solidifies that decision. Angela's face...yikes.

I’m excited but still being critical. I agree the Angela part for the trailer seemed like, I dunno, that whole moment may be ruined. I don’t think bloober is even aware enough that their writing is way too on the nose, at best. The Short Message also gave me stomach ulcers with the dialogue so I feel like they might make Angela similar to the character in short message, in the way she talks in a very “I’m so sad and have had a trauma” tone to it, hope I’m wrong. Some of James dialogue sounds like that too, but I think I’m overall okay with his voice acting and how everyone else’s sounds.
On a more positive note, love how the town looks, the fog, and I actually love these new horror game remakes (resident evil, alone in the dark) and I think silent hill trying to emulate that but in its own way is actually very smart. Can only wait and see, I’m just hoping konami still releases like a collection of the older games like they have with metal gear, contra, castlevania etc.
Also, from some of the gameplay, I wonder if they are going to try going with a more free roamish town. Not a huge map or anything, similar to how evil within 2 did it or taking how downpour did it but make it work better. The breaking a car window to get a health drink was very much like evil within 2.
