Glad to see you're not a purist when it comes to materials for drawer dividers. I recently salvaged a discarded metal tool chest, and after I lugged it home and did some clean-up, I remembered this video. A quick trip to a local vinyl fence supplier netted me a big pile of scrap pieces; now all I need is a bit of glue and a lot of elbow grease! Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Very cool Carl! Glad to hear you were able to find scrap from a fence company because sadly this whole concept can be cost prohibitive if the only option is to buy new materials and then just cut it up into small pieces.
Since you got the material for free you should be able to justify getting some of that special vinyl adhesive because although it's a little bit pricey it really does do a great job.

Another Next Level Carpentry viewer? Per your suggestion: Since the FREE tool chest is probably worth a few hundred bucks, and the vinyl scraps were also FREE, I guess I can afford to spend lavishly on a bit of vinyl glue!

Hi Matt, great video.
Just a quick tip for anybody interested...have you tried plumbers solvent weld for PVC pipes. It comes with applicator brush built onto the screw-top lid. Just a quick paste around the divider's edges, and insert your dividers with your block for squaring up. 😎vent well.
No need to fillet PVC glue like Matt's doing here, you will make a face on face but joint with this technique of using solvent weld.
warning don't add toooooo much! 🤣🤣
There's a technical issue with your suggestion and that is that these square fence parts are actually vinyl and not PVC so PVC solvent and cement have only very marginal results. FWIW I didn't understand the difference on the first totes I made decades ago and those original ones failed where these, made with that equally nasty vinyl cement are very tough...

The vinyl fence posts, cut on your table saw into longitudinal halves, then cut on your miter saw to drawer lengths is genius and everybody can do this. Thanks.
The vinyl part material is a novel idea. I inherited my father-in-law's rolling tool cabinet, and is like to add this kind of organization. Thank you for sharing, and God bless you.

Hey ... thanks for this great idea. My wife bought me a new roll away for Christmas and I plan to get better organized as I move my tools from the old tool chest to the new one. Using the PVC fence post idea really looks economical, easier to accomplish, easier to change when necessary, and ... what a time saver.
FYI ... I used your lesson on making long taper wedges when I remodeled my bathroom ... you're the best .... thanks again.

Definitely some Next Level Organization! I was making foam dividers like Adam Savage (Mythbusters) makes on his Tested channel here on UA-cam, but this saves even more time and should last even longer! Thx!!!

Glad to hear it TFJD... I'm glad it held your attention... I tried to edit it down 'tight' to make it more appealing to a wide range of viewers . I've got one more Abe joke that I couldn't figure out how to weave into the dialog. I sometimes say to people after a drastic/disturbing event of some sort; "Other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how did you like the play?" Usually good to ease tension in an uncomfortable situation.... This was a great tutorial and a fantastic and unique idea. Well done.
I built a painting studio for my artist wife and used these to organize her drawer. I used the remaining shorter left over pieces to make smaller ones and made a sliding half sled that just sits on top of the bottom ones giving her a drawer and a half. It worked awesome. Thank you for the video and all of your videos which I enjoy watching.

this is truly genius ,very smart and daring move to go with tool trays and not some bad kaizen/shadow foam, those mechanics don't know what they are doing , let them drown in dust, oil ..and dirty foam
Your tool box organization video is timely for me. We have spent several years moving to and remodeling a second house thus having the need to create two workshops with many duplications. Everything has finally been moved to the new location and stuffed in three 36 inch tool cabinets and on various shelves with little attention being given to organization. Our task is now to purge unnecessary duplications, organize and “file” what remains, and use what we have for enjoyable projects. Thanks for your timely video even though you gave us no guidance for the purge process. Letting go of old friends (tools and people) challenges those of us who have amassed so many of each in our life adventures. Take care.
Sounds like we traveled a similar road where tools, toolboxes and organization is concerned Aubrey. I didn't think about adding my philosophy on organization into the video but, with your comment, think I should have. Brings up my definition of junk. Junk is something you keep for 10 years and throw it out the day before you need it! Tell me I'm wrong on that, I dare you. 😉😂
With that in mind, here is the core of my purge process thinking:
I know from experience that if I purge 10 unused things (tools, material, supplies) I'll end up needing one of those things at some point in the future. The benefit of living without those 10 things cluttering my life/mind/thinking FAR outweighs the cost of replacing it. Plus, there's a good chance the replacement I get will be exactly what I need where the one I've kept around for 10+ years would most likely be a compromise.
These basic thoughts/observations/perspectives can and do serve me quite effectively... when I take the time to focus and act on them, that is! BTW I've got some serious purging to get to and hopefully this dialog will guide me away from hypocrisy... Best, Matt
Thank you so much for your support, wisdom, and commentary. Part of the problem with holding on to “everything” you accumulate is you forget where it is or forget that you have it. On rare occasion you might find a lost item just when you need it. But right now we are drowning in our accumulations of both worthless and worthwhile things. We are slowly thinning down both. Our goal of moving was(is) to get to a less complicated life. We had not fully anticipated that that meant trimming down stuff by at least half. Maybe the moral of this story is the less you have the happier you can be. The real moral is “stuff” can’t make you happy. Best wishes, peace, and love.
@@assngrass1943 One way to decide what to keep and what to discard is to mentally or even actually putting the items on a table. Just like a yard sale. Then go over them and look for items you would actually pay money for to "get" (i.e. keep). If you won't pay any money then throw it away. I keep most unnecessary things only because I paid some money to acquire them and because of that perceived value I am afraid to discard them. But they are a PIA or heavy load on the mind in reality. And just as Matt said: Get the item when you need it in exactly the shape or form you will apply it. It might even have better technology or other advantages the old item didn't.
Time and focus are primary ingredients and necessities for any organizational challenge, I think, but I have to wonder if that statement is just a rationalization for avoiding allocating in my life the time and focus to organize our the large shop space we built to be an accommodating work space. (Run-on sentences are a symptom of disorganization!) My commitment to shop organization has reached a stand still. A supply of new and old drawer trays and dividers along with the contents of two toolbox drawers lie restless on the table saw and its large out feed table while other demands consume my time and attention. I would be in real trouble if I had to use the table saw or needed to find one of the tools piled on the table saw. Someday, maybe, if I live long enough. RIGHT!. Thanks all for the ideas and suggestions.

"Drawerganizing" gotta love it! Also like the low key anti-kaizen approach: efficient versus showcasing. However, it's only cheap if you are using scrap fence parts.

Makes organizing a little sweeter than if you have to pay full price for full posts only to cut them into little pieces for your organizers... good luck?😀

Nice idea, the UK doesn't appear to do these types of fence post but it seems like ducting or channel is what to look for. I was 3d printing dividers, but this is a much faster way of sorting the disaster that is my tool chest.
Wow! What a breath of fresh air! I am just like you in many ways. I live organization as I am definitely OCD. Thanks for the glue links. I will be starting a revamp since I just retired. I have subscribed and 👍🏻up. On a side note have you looked at video comparisons on the 12” DeWALT miter saw & the Bosch Axial Glide saw. I would definitely take your opinion over some of the others since you are also very organized in your thinking. Perhaps on a future video? Thank you for what you do. Congrats on your retirement Jim... enjoy your new phase in life! If I were to buy a new miter saw today I'd take a serious look to compare the new Makita model/design that's out there. Don't know model numbers but in an off the cuff assessment I like the idea of compact sliding on short rails vs all the pivot points on the Bosch. Not sure what the current DeWalt even looks like because I'm completely satisfied with the non-compound, non-sliding DeWalt I bought during the OJ Simpson trial era! I'd buy a new one of what I have in a heartbeat but 'they' quit making solid simple function mitersaws back about the time the 'not guilty' verdict came out...

Absolutely the best idea to organize any set of drawers, whether in the shop or in the home that I have ever seen. Great video showing all the details to insure a successful execution of this project. I’ll have to contact some vinyl decking businesses to see if the have any scrap fence posts.

I just cut 2-liter milk cartons in half in vertical. milk cartons make grate fence posts too!

Great idea! I have a dozen old vinyl fence posts lying around. Couldn't get myself to throw them away. Now I have a great use for them all! Just need to figure out where to get the glue!

This is a really cool idea for organizing a toolbox. My box is a mess. I considered foam, but I have too many tools in the box as it is and while foam is sharp looking, 2/3 of my tools would be without a home, this system just might work to organize the box without compromising on storage capacity!
