    This is why I love Carlton. He may be a huge dweeb, but he's also smart, articulate, well-mannered, and not ashamed of his intelligence or his success. And when Top Dog is pumping gas at the 76, content in the knowledge that he's not a "sell-out", Carlton will be a CEO or a congressman or a justice on the Supreme Court, and he won't be any less black because of it.
    Keep on wearing Ralph Lauren polo shirts and dancing to Tom Jones, Carlton. You the MAN.

      +What-If Machine a) isn't top dog in college to pursue a better life? he wants to be a success right? but then i guess in his opinion carlton was born into it so he felt he didnt earn it but you cant choose that. carlton didnt want to live off his parents he did want to be a success himself. b) hey, don't look down on those who pump gas, it's a need. all jobs are important. problem is people dont see it. c) i read somewhere many rich people wear cheaper clothes that's how they still have more $. usually poor or middle class people have luxury goods many they can't afford. you never know. d) i bet top dog wants a butler, he's envious of carlton's lifestyle. however will was the same way; he lived w/ carlton and went to bel air prep and had the butler and everything too so why wasn't he treated like carlton was?

    "Being black isn't what I'm trying to be, its what i am" best line I've heard from Carlton. so true also, being black isn't a behavior. its like the guy was trying to say a black person can't be successful or have his own music taste or live in a big house because only white people can have that luxury. Carlton's father worked hard to get his family where they are now, and living in a certain life style doesn't make them any less black.

    • @gambolputty9706
      @gambolputty9706 9 років тому +50

      Exactly! There is an expectation that black people must only be ignorant, violent, and poor. It has been so ingrained that to some degree several black people have begun to agree with this. It limits us to a one hat fits all scenario in an attempt to prove something we already are..black. Proud of the heritage we come from and still fighting for the right to be who we want to be without being pushed down or told we can't. You do you and don't let other people tell you who you are and what should define you.

    One of the things I loved about Fresh Prince was the relationship shown here between Carlton and Will. Will tries to save Carlton the embarrassment by saying he(Will) didn't get in. • @ddespair
      @ddespair 6 років тому +11

      CoolsBreeze opportunity is the key word here. The frat leader didn’t like Carlton because Carlton didn’t come from a background that inhibited his hard work and instead provided him opportunities. Yes, Carlton worked hard, but someone who has to work a job or take care of their little sister while on a tight money budget has to work harder. That’s why he didn’t like Carlton, because Carlton never knew “the struggle”. Carlton was always safe in his mansion, always had food, had a butler and a mother and father, any support he needed he had. What Carlton said was still true, I’m just saying, that’s why the frat leader thought he wasn’t black enough because at the end of the day, being black in America is a struggle.

    I liked how this episode shows that social status shouldn't dictate who we are or who we can be 'down' with, as well as showing that just because some of us are born with silver-spoons in our mouths, that doesn't mean that they're different from us as people.
    Such a noteworthy message to an entertaining but bittersweet episode of the greatest sitcoms of all-time.

    • @DannyPhantomBeast

      @oooh19 8 років тому

      +ChocolateAssMilk wait, now you're stating how "rich kids" are supposed to behave/think etc? maybe they want to be like for themselves not their $$ so it may be a way of expressing themselves, they're still growing up and discovering who they are and trying to fit in/stand out, depends on the person and the situation. it's also the time period too; like 90s vs 2010s. very different (yet some things remain the same, people are still the same, just different technology which sometimes people misuse). social dynamics/workplace dynamics still very much alive and well. also on a different note, women often hold other women back from success. as women, heterosexual or homosexual, fat or thin, any religion or race, age etc well we are all jumping the same hurdles yet women are hardest on each other!

    My buddy was telling me about this episode a few months ago when we were working on a ship together, He's black 6foot, Dreadlocks down to mid back, I'm a short stocky white guy next to him brown hair blue eyes- and we would go on Shore leave together when we could in the US- and I would notice other blacks staring him down and what not- So Finally I asked him about it.
    and he reminded me of this Episode of Fresh Prince and was saying some view him as a sellout because he's hanging out with a white-guy and has a good stable job making great money seeing the world and what have you.
    Kind of crazy how this scene still applies to a lot of people today.

I speak the language of the fellow dudes, bros, dudemen and brother dudes and that always gets me looked at like an alien by other black people. "You sold out" or "You're white-washed" are the most common phrases. Dont know why people think I owe it to them to be a certain way, I am the way I am even though I grew up in "the ghetto" and black neighbors I grew up with and known my entire life absolutely loathe me for that lol.

    I'll never forget this episode. Just thought of it recently. This is still true even in the new millennium. Carlton was right. I say all the time that being black is not an attitude or state of mind. IT'S A COLOR! We all endure the same struggle real talk. Although I would NEVER ever in life dance like that LOL. Props to Will for standing up for his cuzzo too. He was more than qualified for that fraternal organization. Top Dog really played himself and his position was in jeopardy for promoting his so-called Afrocentric pro-black views. People act according to their upbringing and environment. It shapes who we are. Not our fault if we were raised poor or rich. It's just reality. I was born and raised in the hood but that doesn't mean I have to glorify it. I don't condone ignorance, violence in these streets, violence against women and dysfunctional folx. Talking like you have no vocabulary is an embarrassment. Even this music today is an embarrassment and I'm done defending it. I know how to operate in different social circles. This business has taken me many places I never thought I'd travel to. That's an advantage to being educated, versatile and adapting to your environment. I still get judged on the way I look. Even if I dress up and greet people with decency & respect. Even worked an outside sales job in cities where the police would apprehend me every other day because they thought I was a burglar. Two examples of people I can't stand: 1)Those who are ghetto as hell and try to act all uppity and high class. 2) Those who grew up rich and act like they know what time it is out here just from watching videos and buying rap music.

    My parents worked hard to move us out of the old neighbourhood and bought a nice house in the suburbs during my teens, wasn't much but we had enough rooms for each of us siblings and what we needed. Once, I went back to the old area to see some of my old friends and one guy said to me that I don't understand their struggle cos I'm priveleged and live in a nice house that my dad bought, etc. So I had to tell him that "We're both from the same streets, we just too different paths!" We grew up in the same inner city estate (housing projects) in London and both be and I worked in the same local grocery store too. But in the end, he chose to be a "gangster" roaming with gangs and getting into fights while I pursued education and worked part time to support myself.

    This episode taught a valuable lesson. Now, I can feel for Carlton. I was born in NYC and moved to Dominican Republic at the age of 7 and came back here 12 years later. I'm Dominican because my parents are. When I came back here, many people (whites, blacks, including my people) would say how "white" I sound when I talk. Their ignorance is revealed right there. Just because I'm not the best dancer of Salsa, Merengue and Bachata doesn't mean I'm not Dominican enough.
    Being Hispanic is not a state of mind, it's a heritage. Also, social status should NOT dictate who we are or who we should hang out with. Also, political differences shouldn't determine your friendship with someone. It sucks that people suffer from racism, but it's a lot worse when it's done upon you by one of your own people.
    Carlton's words are relevant to issues like these in this day and age. Blacks and Latinos would say "we should stick together", unfortunately when either a black or a Latino achieves success, these people who talk about sticking together would say "oh, so you're white now?" It's pathetic and sad.

    Real nigga shit Carlton said. It's still going on today. Some folks really think what makes a "real" brother is where he from and being "hood". Not everybody has that experience, it ain't they fault and they shouldn't apologize for it. Neither should the ones that made it out. If they ashamed of where they from, I could see calling them sell outs. But not if they did something others didnt.

    I'm Japanese-American, male, born and raised in Seattle. In 2013, I had a baby girl with a very pretty girl who is Black/Cherokee/White, 5'9", and slim. Our daughter is very pretty, who looks like a young Mariah Carey or young Skylar Diggins. She's 8 in 2021. She doesn't play basketball, but she plays soccer, and is a good chess player for her age group. She took part in chess tournaments with other kids her age. I think that she is very pretty, and I've sent her pictures to modeling agencies. Well, I've already had more than one person tell me, "Your daughter's Black, but she isn't REALLY Black." And, I've gotten barbs about her, because she plays CHESS!! What the heck?

    Carlton Banks is my hero.
    To this day it troubles me that I used to have "friends" who stripped me of my race because I liked rock music, dressed alternatively and didn't use slang. At the time I didn't realise what an ignorant outlook they had and as a result the negativity they pushed onto me. To say "this is what black people do..", "this is what white people do.." ect. is just boxing people and enforcing out of date stereotypes - which are, more often than not, self fulfilling prophecies.

Then they ‘voted’ me out on the week before initiation because bros didnt ‘know me well enough’. That was bogus. It was devastating. Then realized that I probably wasn’t their ‘type’ even though other bros did in fact like me. I’m trying another chapter next time.

      Hate to burst your bubble there but Carlton was not exactly innocent here. I could understand if Carlton was really humble and grounded during his time with the frat, but he was anything but that. He presented himself as a arrogant, pompous, snobby,full of himself twit that didn't know when to shut the hell up. Keep in mind that Carlton was the one flaunting about how rich he was along with having a butler and living next to the reagans. Granted you do have blacks that act like top dog in unwarranted situations but Carlton brought this on himself. Remember earlier in the episode Top Dog was being nice to him, then Carlton had to go and run his mouth.
