Just a quick question. Do you even know that Iran had a Democratic elected president before the Shah? Do you know that Shah rebelled against the democratic elected government once oil was nationalized in Iran? For those that are reading and don't understand what nationalizing oil means, well it means the oil is owned by the country. You see foreign companies, such as Shell, used to own oil rights. A country like the UAE didn't have complete ownership of oil rights until maybe the 1990's. Oh, also Libya had a king that used to provide free meals and clothing to all kids at school. He was taken down after nationalizing oil and Qadafi took over. Obviously the dude was crazy but he initially was pro west and reversed nationalizing oil. What happened to so called major opposition leader arrested by SAVAK 0:35 -Karim Sanjabi. You can read about him in Wikipedia. Later after revolution, Khomeini tried to eliminate him putting him in front of firing squad -if he hadn’t escaped Iran. Did even Shah think to try to do that?

Fascinating. That Al-Amir guy was correct. Iran(Persia) needed a monarch in a democratic system as opposed to monstrosity that rules over it today.
The Shah made some absolutely great points about the US and the entire oil situations but if he was so great and loved then why did his people turn on and overthrow him? I'm honestly just trying to understand this better
He did apparently rule with an iron fist but that only applied to political parties and free expression. He did not interfere in people's personal lives and freedoms. At the time a lot of the rural poor that worked in Tehran became Khomeini's foot soldiers because his words resonated more with the religious poor folk from rural areas. Shah's highly centralized economy meant that he ignored the small towns, most of which were fairly religious and conservative. In order to find work those folks would go to the capital Tehran, which ended up being his downfall alongside his own propping up of the Mullahs against the communists, a huge mistake he paid dearly for.

Dude was a paper tiger, his reliance on US and West to help him rule started in 1953 with the involvement of US Central Agency in staging a coup and bringing him back. These are indisputable facts now available thru unclassified CIA documents. He created SAVAK and gave them autonomy, budget and man power to do what they deemed necessary to preserve his rule. He only came to regret his actions when millions of people including some elite as this piece clearly shows started to openly oppose him. The Petro $ could not save him after all. Having said that, Islamist did what any good opposition does, took over a movement that was initially started as a liberal, organic movement inside Iran Universities and other organizations and redirect it to what they wanted, an even worse type of governance, i.e. Theocracy.

I was there in the 70's. I remember Jimmy Carter welcoming the Shah in his U.S. visit. I don't remember what came of it, however. The next thing I knew, the Shah was toppled and Iranian students kidnapped the U.S, embassy workers.

There are articles about him and his magazine in Wikipedia Farsi (in Persian or Farsi), if you can read Farsi.
If what he was printing can be called pornography then your definition of it and the rest of the world is quite different. He was a liberal at heart which believed in freedom of expression, print and press. I think if you can't understand that then there is the problem, we faced back in 1978. He was fiercely secular which I think you can clearly see in his interview. He outlines facts and figures here which are indisputable. 85% of Petro $ found its way in to the pocket of 5% of Iranians. When many provinces, specially in south and southwest lacked basic services such as running water, hospital and doctors. The very few and select in Tehran were getting rich by simply sponsoring contracts from buildings to shipping to Petroleum projects. It seems Iranian have very short memory, or I guess 43 years is long enough for most to forget these facts.

Re Plato and Socrates , the great weakness of democracy is its inability to elect wise leaders which the world sorely needs today. Wisdom , wisdom, wisdom is what we need in leaders today . Neither the mechanisms of Democray nor religious leadership or kingship guarantee wisdom in a leader. But saying that, true to say in kingship or religious leadership or democracy , a wise leader might arise - it seldom ever does . Democracy certainly does not guarantee such leadership . The world needs to rethink the way in which wise leadership might arise given that its not an innate talent in many humans. What does wise leadership look like is another perplexing question ? - not easy to define as no doubt Socrates would have shown in his dialogues with others and for which reason he was in part put on trial for corrupting the young and denying the god or gods of his day .

Irony is, some protestors in Iran are calling for the same American embassy to come to Iran to restore old humiliation and misery, bloody fools!
Currently, Iran would have become one of the richest countries in the world during Khamini's rule, but the American sanctions are responsible for not being able to do so.
