I think it's advisable to take into consideration whether you need color correction around the eyes: if you've a lot of pinky purple discoloration you may want the yellow cancelation of “soft ochre". If you've a lot of grey (blue) based darkness, the pinky red cancellation of “painterly" may be more appropriate regardless of which is best matched to your overall undertone. Adding yellow to an eye with too much blue grey darkness can increase muddiness, as adding pink/red to existing purple discoloration can do the same.
THANK YOU! You have no idea how long I have waited for someone to just talk more in depth about these two. So thankful right now.
agree!
Me too! I have been debating which to buy forever. Thanks for this video!
finally, someone has made a video on this after I've been tossing between the two in which one to get for so long. thanks why I've been putting it off for so long. thanks so much! xx
I have waiting for someone to do this exact video forever! Good job with the details.
If you are deeper in skin tone you can use either one. The whole point for us women of color is just to stop our skin tone from effecting how vibrant our eyeshadow is. It doesn't matter what you use hell I've used a nyx jumbo eye pencil in milk and it's very stark against my complexion however once my eye makeup is done you wouldn't know.
How do you use Ebates in the store ? I thought you had to use the website.
Who’s here in March 2019 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊

THANK YOUUUU. Oh my gosh I have been waiting for a video like this.
I have been waiting for someone to make this EXACT video!!! Ty so much Jessica!!!
SUPER helpful video! I've been tossing these two back and forth in my mind for ages now, wondering (much like everyone else in the comments below) which one I would like better on my skin. I think you've just made up my mind with your in depth explanation of the two! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I love how your channel is a mix of different things. You are awesome at showing us what really works and how to use it. I love your channel.
Painterly goes on so much smoother, I have no idea why! But since I discovered the essence shadow primer I've put both of my MAC paint pots away! I'm literally shocked how great that primer is and it only costs a few $$
I have to disagree a little bit. While foundation type shades are good and all, some people have to color correct discolorations on the eyelids like one would dark circles so that the shadow on top can look flawless or even true to color. My eyelids are darker than my face so I can get away with lighter colors and they're quite sallow/ochre/olive so adding yellow on top is as bad as adding green, so a pink color(color corrects green) helps brighten and balance. Yellowy shades I use on people who have a lot of dark redness or purple veins showing through
agree with u!
thank you!! i have big veins on my lids so I’ll get soft ocre.
Dark circles will not show through with any of their shades.
I've been dying for a video on these two!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT
New subbie! I just found you. You are so vibrant and real. I'm a total newbie to makeup and your tips and thoughts are really helpful, plus you're just a joy to watch. Thanks for putting this content out. It's wonderful!
It's crazy that you filmed this video. I was just thinking about purchasing one of these and I wasn't sure which one to get. Thank you!
I love this!! I've always had some questions about these two colors - I hear about them both all the time but have never seen them compared!
I haven't bought one yet and I'm intrigued every time eleventh gorgeous mentions them! Thank you for this comparison this was super helpful! Now I know I want soft ochre!
This is such a helpful video! I can't wait to pick one of these up
Thank you so much for this video!!! I've been wanting the paint pots for a while but didn't know which one to get because different artist had either Soft Ochre or Painterly and I feel like I matched both of those artist's skin tones!!!! Lol so thank you so much I always wondered the difference and I will definitely go to the store for swatches!!!!
Very helpful! Thanks :) also, that lip color looks sooooo pretty with your shirt! Hope you're having a great weekend
THANK YOU for this video! I've watched so many videos of girls using either one or the other of these 2 & wondered which one would work for my light skin tone. I had thought soft ochre would be what I need & now I can see I was on the right track from your swatches.
I have a final after 4 hours and here I am watching your video instead of studying
This is really helpful! People talk about the paint pots all the time, but never in detail.
Well, I got exactly the information I needed from this video. Even mentioned a "glitter" in Bare Study that eliminated it from my choices. I have been using Painterly and it's kinda a little dark especially in winter, so I will get the Soft Ochre also, so if anything, I can mix them on the finger and shove that shit on my eye to hide the worst of the dark circles and not have to put Brule shadow on top. On the days I can't be bothered anyway. Many thanks!
I use the Maybelline color tattoo cream eye shadow in the rose shade - very similar to the Painterly shade and much cheaper! If you are neutral or pink toned give it a go - I use it everyday ✅
What shade would work for a yellow/warm skintone for a darker complexion
+eyerus I'm not too sure to be honest, it would be worth you having a look at the whole range online or if you can get to the shops try out a few. They are the best !!!
The Maybelline tattoo creams all have shimmer in them, Painterly is matte. Also the Maybelline ones crease. You get what you pay for.
@@juliju8837 not all of them have shimmer and I think creme de rose/nude are/could be paint pot dupes. The side by side swatches look VERY similar shade wise
Wow this is awesome ! for the past month I've been online trying to figure it out and just gave up. thanks!
Red looks really good on you! I like how it matches your lipstick
Now I know which one to get for me! This is so helpful!
Jessica.. I went to MAC and I'm on the warmer side of medium and they recommended the Painterly. I was trying to find a good eyeshadow primer but also wanted to use something that would lighten my lids!! I love it. It works great for me... I think I will try the Ochre too just because!! Thanks for the video and have a blessed evening! 🌻
I think mac idea (as for the foundation) is to neutralise the warm or the cool in you face, so they tend to give the opposite undertone to do so. As for the foundation: if you are warm they will give you nc if you are cool they will give you nw :) n is for neutral :)
I was holding both shades in my hands earlier today at Ulta and didn’t purchase because I didn’t know what shade would work best. Thank you for the helpful video! Will be going back:)
omg u have no idea how helpful this was! Thank u! ☺
Wish I would have watched this video a few days earlier. Just ordered my first Mac paint pot and was having a hard time deciding between the two. I chose soft ochre after much debate. I haven't received my order yet but I think I made the right decision based on your video! Thanks for making videos like this!
Awesome video!! Thanks for informing us on which cult classics we should get ;)
Glad to have this today since it’s on sale at Ulta! 😊
Great video! Watched this at Ulta as I was trying to select! I went in after watching Wayne Goss video fully intent on getting painterly and when swatching it thought “no way!”. I pulled ochre out and thought it looked more promising for me but wasn’t sure. After watching your video I was convinced. I’m just going for a blank canvas and didn’t want any pink tones.
How do you not have more subs. We need to get you to 1,000,000 subs. I love you so much. You always help me when looking for products.
I use them not just to prime but to correct.. the lid itself but also the inner/outer corner of the eye and the lower lash line. Many of us have darkness or redness in those areas and even though it seems like a small thing it make such a difference. I wore painterly for about a year before I bought soft ochre, and it worked fine even though I have a yellow skin tone, but I like having both. I choose between them based on the tone of the makeup I plan to use.. ochre for warm, painterly for cool. If you only want one I would go with painterly.. it's more neutral IMO.. ochre is very warm and I find it looks odd with cool toned shadows unless you cover it completely. I have bare study but never wear it.. I find it chunky. The others I really love are groundwork (neutral soft brown matte), stormy pink (dusty purple matte).. both of those are fabulous bases for smoky eyes or are beautiful on their own.. and indianwood (metallic/pearl amber) just because it's gorgeous.
This video just popped in my recommendation and i just realized for how long I'm watching you.❤
I really love your eyeshadow in this video
Have you tried mixing them together?
Omg I was just searching for something that compared the two last night!!!
Painterly is on my dream makeup list! I can't wait to buy it when I someday walk into a MAC lol ❤️
great timing I was trying to decide too! thanx!
This video was helpful in my decision. Thank you!! 😊
I think it's also important to consider what type of eye look you tend to do. If you go for cool colors, get painterly. Warm colors, get soft ochre.
This vídeo came just on time! I didn't know which one to buy. I'm really pale, NW10, i tend to have a pink undertone but I wasn't sure..I can pull yellow based foundations too
This is such a helpful video. Thank you so much!!!
Don't know why anyone would dislike this video. It's very helpful!
Thanks! This helped. I have a very yellow under tone, so I’ll get the soft ochre. I’ve been making ruebenesque work and bare study is too pale. Perky is a nice peach.
on camera painterly looks brown
It's more like a fair soft salmon pink
No. More of a dusky rose...
I just got the painterly in the 21 days of beauty excited to try it.
painterly is a pink and i think that painterly is warm and the ochre is a cool color. i'm an esthetician and makeup color. she's good at makeup tho
RedheadxBeauty you got it backwards
Mabeline do great dupes of these Creme de Nude for soft ochre and Creme de Rose for painterly. Great cheap alternative xx
Really useful thank you from England 👍🏻
I also use "Laying Low" in a Mac Paint Pot for an eyelid primer....
same here
I had bought Painterly and wondered if soft Ochre would’ve be better suited to my fair warm complexion. I like the coverage (tiny veins) of Painterly but will pick up Ochre to give it a try. Maybe mixing them is an option too.
Thanks
This video was so helpful!
I really appreciate this video! thank you so much for doing this :-)
Here from 2021! Thank you so much for making this video. Very informative 👏🏼
FINALLY THANK YOU JESSICA
Thank you. This was very helpful.
🦋 thanks for this...I was wondering the difference. I have soft ochre but to be honest I always use rubensque way more. Even though rubensque was discontinued I have 3...I got them when I found out it was discontinued. They are way more creamy and soft ochre is chalky to me.
Thanks for this! Very helpful. 😆
years ago painterly was all the rage. I went to a mac counter looking to buy it, but always sold out so I went with soft ocre which I never heard about. I have loved it, but recently ventured out to painterly. painterly doesn't look quite right, so now I use them combined together which is a really nice shade. I wish they made one with a slight yellow tone or neutral, but lighter than soft ocre. even still, it's my favorite base!
is it just me, or does she look more cool toned? she said she's warm toned and has same complexion as me, and I'm pretty cool toned; not warm at all. now I'm confused which one to get. did anyone else think that or just me? maybe I'll just get both lol
Colours on screen are always hard to capture. I thought the painterly looked better on her but maybe it's different irl
She is so cool toned dark hair pinkish skin dark cool eyes ... But it could be that it's looked like because of the camera
1:27 she said she leans* a little warm but is mostly neutral, which I would agree with based on the footage (and also following Jessica for a long time and seeing many of her videos in different light settings)
**edit:** a wrong word.
@@foreverNwonder this comment I made was 4 years ago, wow that flew by!! I ended up getting both and like both for different looks. I'm rewatching this video now. So crazy how much has changed! I have now watched all her videos going forward too! Love her :-)
@@kierstingunnels7281 lol oh my gosh I didn’t look at the date! It seemed like an older Jessica video… lol love seeing the evolution of her content ❤️
You look *BEAUTIFUL* in that red top and lipstick!!
Makeup Revolution has a dupe for this one. It probably about $8. It dries to a powdery finish not super dry, but doesn't stay creamy or tacky. I use their color Core, which is like a concealer color. Was looking into this original one and based on these two color choices, it seems very confusing to pick the right shade since non of them look neutral. They look to me more like color correctors...one leaning to pink to cancel darkness and the other to yellow to provide brightness.
Painterly it is lol. Thank you! This is very helpful
Great video. I use painterly and really like it. Please list the lipstick you wear.
Urban decay has primer potion in Eden. gonna switch to it when I run out of my mac Painterly PP
Imma get both I was yellow and now I’m neutral but I have this feeling I’ll like the more pinky one
I literally stood in MAC for half an hour last week debating between these two.
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkk 😂
I got painterly at first, finished that, then got soft ocre. I can't pick a favourite though cus they both work for my skin tone.
Thank you for this!
Woah! Jess from 5 years ago. 😆 I love it! Other than your voice being slightly higher, your intonation is the same. Super nifty! Also thanks for the comparison. I know you use painterly now, what made you switch back?
Thank you for sharing!☺️
Where was this video when I was shopping for them? Lol. I have painterly and I like the look of it on me. Staying power tho is not very long as what everyone says. I would use an actual eye primer to make my shadows last.
lol...THANK U SOO MUCH... IVE BEEN WONDERING THIS ???????
How do you apply the paint pot? I know you can use your fingers but is there a good brush or applicator that works well with these?
So what should I do when I'm cool toned but also really pale?:/ the painterly looks dark
i have been debating a few days now on which one i want. i'm fair and cool, however painterly looked so dark on my hand, but soft ochre looks way too yellow. the mac girl told me to use soft ochre and that she likes that one best to make colors pop. i'm so torn, bc for me $22 isn't cheap so i want to make the right choice. any suggestions?
What I wanted to know is, are the paint pots better or worse at holding your shadow than a more liquid-y eye shadow primer?
My daughter got me groundwork fir my birthday, lol but I just ordered the one from bh cosmetics and they swatch almost identical and, wear exactly the, same, don't matter tho I'm grateful I always, wanted to have a paint pot I've tried tons of highend and drugstore eye primers, and bases my faves are mac and bh also love the milani , smashbox!
Hallo, can I ask you a question? Can I use _bare study_ as an eyeshadow base?
Or is it too glittery??
And do I need an eyelid primer under the paint pot?
Great video idea
I actually wear both these shades to brightening my shadows. But if one is using them as canvas to conceal discoloration on the eye lids alone, this would not work for me. But I love them as a base for myself.
Is such a helpful video!
thanks love for the review
I actually love Perky- its awesome
Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creme de Rose is an exact dupe of MAC Paint Pot in Painterly...
I literally spent ten minutes deciding between these two colors at the counter today! If only I had seen your video first. I ended up with Soft Ochre because I really want to start as pale as possible with no shimmer. The Painterly skewed a little too pink (for me). I really want a neutral pale matte taupe cream - if you have one to recommend let me know!
thanks, this comment really helped me decide on soft ochre as well, as I need to order it online.
i love painterly it is so pretty
I never knew which shade to get so I've never looked into it lol
Know this is an old video but think I’m probably going to get this since they are now on sale. It’s been a while since Mac swatched me and this is what they came up with
MAC NC25-Studio Waterweight SPF 30
Don’t know if they still make this one. I used to be full on medium and most called me olive complexion. As I’ve gotten older I’d say I’m definitely a light medium now. Didn’t realize as I aged my skin tone would lighten. Some people think I can be neutral but I definitely think I lean yellow as in I have brown hair which is highlighted. If I go too long without it being colored all over and highlights are being put on top of highlights I look yellow so I stay away from getting too blonde. Which one do you think would be best for me?
I just got my mac counter to colour match me for them as I was similar to three shades as I prefer a my eyelids but better I have Groundwork
I wanna get that how is it I'm a darker skin tone which one would work for me
BH Cosmetics has dupes of these for only $7, check them out. They also have a very porcelain one as well, which has a tiny bit of shimmer in the pot, but it doesn't show up on the skin.
I wish I had waited to buy mine after seeing this😩 I bought soft ochre and it's just too yellow on me. I see others use it and it looks great but when I use it...😕 I even talked to a Mac artist over the phone, explained my skin tone and that was what she recommended. I'll give painterly a try next
I use Painterly and my skin tone is dark olive. I use it for a primer only, so I guess I'm confused on why the color is so important. It covers, and then is covered up with eye shadow?
I know, I don't get it either. Everyone always talks about having it cover any freckles or veins on the eyelid.....but aren't the majority of us putting a bunch of Eyeshadows on top of it anyways?!
For me, it would be like a medium skin tone adding a dark brown as a base.
I am fair skin and ordered the painterly hopefully it will work. Didn’t realize there was so much talk around the color. Definitely will to a video showing how it works for me
it's really the undertone of your skin one is warm and one is cool undertone! so sometimes if you look at your wrist and you have a more yellow undertone yu're cool if it's more pink it's a warm. painterly is a good warm and i feel like a lot of olive tones are more warm depending on other things about your skin. :)
@@1DLouisTIsMeLuv Thank you, that is helpful.
What's the difference between these and other eyelid primers ?
I'm a Filipino and on the fair side and warm toned. Soft ochre fits me perfectly. 😍
I would want to see how shadow pops when applied to each for comparison. Just a talk on this wasn't helpful.
Yeah.. Well agreed
I only have the painterly but I will be doing a video showing color over it.
Exactly
@@StaciLeaBeauty do you have a link to your video?
anyone know which one to get with deeper skin tone?
