I keep on checking my own pronunciation of how I say things through this video 😂 I think this is really good practice for people who already know some Japanese but want to work on improving their pronunciation. Also! The built-in subtitles are a nice new feature. 😍🤩
English has several phrases or greetings that are ALSO not really asked in common usage. One that comes to mind is the NYC localized "How ya doin'?" greeting. It is not a question and the person uttering it does not care at all how you are doing. Another is a Mid-West to Southern USA greeting of "How are you?!!" Again, not looking for any sort of answer other than "Hi!!" 😁
Same thing here in Canada. "How are you?" is not a real question. Similarly, the usual reply of "Good", or something similar, is equally meaningless. 😅
I take great pleasure in answering such non-question greetings with correct and true non-answers. Example: "Not dead, yet, but the day isn't over, so we'll see."
@@paulpratt idk about where op lives but in england thats generally fine. a self deprecating, comedic answer is endearing but giving specifics is the weird part😭
@10:53 I don't know what it is but whenever I hear Japanese women say something and their voice gets deep, I find it really cute. I have been working on learning Korean and if your tongue doesn't move a certain way, the word comes out all wonky. I can't tell you how many times I have screamed something at my phone using Google translate and it pops up with the wrong sentence. 😡 I usually laugh at myself when the translation comes back all weird. 😂 Ahh, the joys of learning a new language. 😀 Thanks for uploading this video. It will be helpful when I start trying to learn Japanese again.
Here is we're just foreigners, not native Japanese. You have to remember this. So, it's okay our accent not to be so native. At least, they just understood what she said with made up accent. Do it in your own style. There's no problem. You even don't have to say foreign words into katakana accents coz you're not Japanese.
At least with these very common words and phrases we have heard in this video I feel pretty confident in my pronounciation. It was very funny to see Cathy trying hard to sound wrong XD
Yeah good call on adding the subtitles to the actual video. More work, but there are just so many millions of people that will never bother clicking a subtitle button. So- smart idea!
literally what we do in uk like with "genki" it's like a mundane conversation or just polite conversation haha. but we say "hey how are you?" or "hope you're doin okay" or something along those lines but usually most typical is "hi how're you", and then you're axpected to reply with "i'm fine thanks how're are you", or some similar version, no one is genuinely asking how they are or genuinely are fine when they say they are, it's just used as a kind of expected polite social greeting just to ... i dunno acknowledge each others presence in a polite none invasive way i guess? x'D but yes this is very similar to the whole "genki" thing in japan by the sounds of it.
I think Japanese can miscomprehended as a bit flat or unemotional to native English speakers. I wonder if that's true for speakers of other languages. This reminds me of many of the Japanese films of the 50s I've seen in which everyone appears to be talking calmly even if they are a bit upset. Fun video.
yes, what they find sincere and kind a lot of us tend to find dismissive or reproachful. and then being more emotive can seem scary even though you want to seem approachable lol
"uh rigatoni bro" 😂 I hear the Japanese 'R' as an 'R' and a 'D' but I stop my tongue from hitting the roof of my mouth for the 'D' sound. So I say ar-dee-ga-toe kinda. Sometimes the Japanese 'G' sounds like a 'G' and an 'N' put together. Dogen UA-cam channel gets into depth on the pitch accent, but I haven't delved too deep into that. Maybe if I was going to live there. I'll be in Japan for the first time in 2 weeks. It will only be a 2 week vacation, so I'm not stressing too much over the language. At least one girl will think the mispronunciation is cute, so I guess that's good.
It might be too complicated a question to ask your guests, given that I don't understand how my non-honorific language affects me, but how does growing up with an honorific language affect one's behavior?
That title would also receive fewer views. If you want to grow a channel, you often have to use the kind of titles that statistically drive more traffic to the video.
Mispronouncing words on purpose must be difficult. 😂Something like that sometimes triggers me and i hate it when i'm doing it myself. 😆 Every language has its own phonetic, everyone should be aware of that. You notice that, for example, when a song is sung in different languages. I think it's good that you keep pointing out those littles mispronunciations because it can really help people. 👍
Bad pronunciation in japanese is very annoying. More annoying is correct those people everytime they say something the wrong way. Don't be that person. But we still can give tips about it. Be kind, please. The most commom words that foreign say wrong is Yakuza and katana.
No doubt those are cute girls, but who can tell with those masks in the way? Some of the pedestrians are maskless, so why are the girls still wearing them?

In Scotland we say You aw right? But it's not a question, just a passing greeting.

Cat, you overdid it. Even ears hurt, and I don't speak Japanese. Drama at its best. Love the way they corrected it. Arigato.

I like the built in subtitles.
Cute Japanese girls always make everything more interesting.

This is how a English speaking person would speak...
"We are not REALLY asking if you're alright."
As a Dutchman I can relate.

I haven't heard Ah-rig-a-tow. Must be riffing Brit English? In America, I'm used to Ah-ree-gah-toe.

Alternative title: "Japanese greetings English native speakers pronounce wrong"...

Cuando termine con mi novia le diré SAYONARA 😭😅
cathys' exaggerated pronunciation sounds like she's trying to hit on someone
