Here in France we often call double-basses the "Grand Mother". I actually call mine "Mémé", which means "Grand Ma" :)

It was presented to us in the third grade back in 1959 as the String Bass. I still have a copy of the "Rubank Elementary Method for String Bass." Produced by Sylvan D. Ward circa 1937! Still refer to it today, when it's time to get back to the basic fundamentals of this wonderful instrument.

When I didn't have gigs I would sometimes play on my porch in a neighborhood that had a lot of drunk college kids walking through to get to a different bar. Every single night i did that at least one person said nice cello. I gave up correcting them and started replying with "thanks, glad you like it".

Anytime I hear someone refer to my instrument as a "cello", I simply give them a look as if they had just stepped in a huge pile of a well known substance some dog deposited on the lawn, as they eagerly walked into church, totally unaware. Don't have to say a word!

I remember when I decided to learn bass about... 25 years ago when I was in 6th grade. I wanted to play in the orchestra, but I didn't want to play violin (5th grade I had tried it but I was no good at it) so when I started middle school and joined orchestra, on our first class my teacher (who was a symphony orchestra violinist) asked me what instrument I wanted, and without even knowing what it was, I said bass (after asking what the options were) since I'd never heard of that instrument. I'm 5'7'' as a fully grown adult, so you can imagine I was a short king when I was 11. Next class they gave me my instrument and it was almost twice my size lol, but I loved it and continued to play in orchestras, going all the way to state orchestra before I graduated highschool. Sadly I stopped playing bass after graduating since they are super expensive, but throughout college continued to play music as a guitarist. Recently I got a bass guitar that I fixed and have begun sight reading bass sheet music again. Hope someday I have north of 1k expendable income to get a dub though :(
Awesome groove in the background btw!
