    To remove the headliner (I have a loaded 2016 XC90 T6 R-Design) you'll have to:
    1. Remove all oh-shit handles w/7mm socket.
    2. Remove all hanger/hooks. This requires a hook tool pry out a center insert, then the entire hanger/hook should come out with a bit of extra prying by hand.
    3. Remove the visors (leave temporarily dangling because you can't disconnect the wire yet)
    4. Remove A-pillar screw (both sides) behind "SRS airbag" black plastic cover. This requires an 8mm socket followed by an 8mm (ideally ratcheting) spanner because the glass is in the way once you get the screw 1/2 way out.
    5. Pull the A-pillar covers away toward the top (bottom can be left in place). It presses against the headliner which is why it needs to be partially removed.
    6. Remove the SOS/On-Call panel. Just pull it downward from the edges (hard) and it will snap out. There is one large plug you have to unplug.
    7. Pull down all speakers and light panels (they will easily pop out) then disconnect them.
    8. NO NEED to remove the side-pillar covers
    9. With doors open, un-seat the edge of the headliner with your fingers. Careful not to crease the liner.
    10. There are at least 6 super-strong Velcro snaps in the front/back corners and center of sides holding the headliner against thee roof. You need to reach your hand between the headliner and roof and find them (where it feels tight) and use some force to push down until they snap loose. CAREFUL to ensure you leave each Velcro piece in its slot so that you can snap them back in when reinstalling.
    11. Reach in and remove as much tape as possible that holds down any electronic wires. There is some glue holding down some wires too that you'll have to carefully pry off (a bitch to remove). This is presumably to reduce rattle when driving. I recommend just a bit of duct tape when re-installing.
    12. Ensure no wires are left attached to the liner (check from all sides)
    13. With all seats folder down, carefully pull down the liner and angle it out the rear hatch to get it out of the way. It requires some flexing.
    14. Now, all the screws are easily accessible to the sunroof. Easy sailing from here.

Found out the new sunroof cassette (that replaces the original) has rubber guides built in to prevent the water leak at the rear corners, therefore, if you get the new one, you do not need add the rubber shims to divert water. Mine rusted, so I had to replace it and got the new one today.

It's all back together now. I had to reset the sunroof/shade because it wouldn't open or close all the way. You have to hold down the close button (position 4, which is the first detent when pushing down/forward). Do not press too far to the final position. Hold it for at least 40 seconds, then keep holding until the system fully goes through an open/close cycle.

Forgot to mention you only need to uncrew the oh-shit handles. No need to pull them out. If you do, you can snap them back in place with folding tabs on the back side before you reinsert the liner.

Thank you for the video, very helpful. Can you tell me how the headliner is held in place. After I remove the side plastic panels, will it be screws and clips that hold the headliner in place?

I also have a front leak, and water is coming out of my intellisafe cover (behind the mirror) and dripping onto my display console. The water eventually caused both my sunshade and sunroof to seize. Terrible design by Volvo.
