  • Saudi Mega-project NEOM Chases Chinese Funds | Vantage with Palki Sharma
First announced in 2017, NEOM is a futuristic Saudi megacity being built in the middle of the desert. It is a part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's bid to diversify the Gulf state's oil-dependent economy. But since its announcement, NEOM has raised eyebrows as architects, economists and investors have questioned its feasibility and costs. So, Riyadh is now courting investors from across the world. The roadshow for NEOM travelled from Beijing to Shanghai to Hong Kong, chasing Chinese funds, amid speculation about the scope of the project and its finances. But will it be enough for NEOM to take off? Palki Sharma tells you.

Cost per m2: 500.000.000.000/(170000*100*(500/3,5))=€ 205,88. That is far too low to build the line
Cost per inhabitant: 500.000.000.000/9.000.000=€ 55.555. That is not enough to build a house/appartment. Let alone hospitals, offices, transportation etc.
Conclusion: The Line will cost at least several trillion.

Whoever thinks this makes sense are looking at the short term gains. Nothing of ecological significance. I hope this does not gets funded, becuase there are other many more deserving the resources and funding.

Instead initially finishing 2 km why not just first build an easily within budget and time half a kilometer part of the structure to show to investors instead of just simulations and models. They can finish that half a km even before 2030 meaning they can get more investors in less time that way instead of asking more investors now even though they still don't have any actual structure to back up their proposals which is why they have a hard time convincing anyone.
