- Saudi Crown Prince MBS Forced to Scale Back Plans For Desert Megacity "The Line"? | Firstpost America
The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman could have to wait a little longer for his dream project's fruition. The Saudi Kingdom has reportedly scaled back plans for the desert mirror city called "The Line", which is the flagship city of the mega multi-billion dollar Neom project. "The Line" which is planned to stretch 170 km, is expected to reach just 2.5 km by 2030. The Saudi sovereign fund is yet to approve the budget 2024 for Neom's first phase which is set to cost $320 billion. According to reports, the financial realities of the huge investment have started to cause concerns at the highest levels of the Saudi government. Watch this video for details.

MBS is the living proof that even being an obscenely rich and well-educated ruler doesn't exempt you from being an idiot.
Probably stretching the term "well-educated" a bit too much there.

MBS is the proof that money can't buy competence.
What a surprise, Saudi Arabia promises something and completely overestimates it's capacity and is forced to reduce expectations by almost 99%.
KSA oil reserves may have been overstated by as much as 300 billion barrels - nearly 40%.
😂😂😂
Pretty much going exactly as I expected
Save your expectations to solve your borders problem
It's preposterous, unrealistic, no chance in heck of ever being what they are presenting. It's ridiculous; no source or power near by, where's the food coming from, 200 meters wide?? That sort of density will drive people insane. On and on it goes with the challenges. It's propaganda more than anything
Firstpost, This made me laugh so hard, thanks for sharing!

So it will be 2,5km by 2030 and with that rate it will be completed by 2432… so MBS will have to live longer than average to see it through 😅

Good luck to SAUDI ARABIA.
Yes and shorter buildings
I know this will be hard for MBS to cancelled the line project. But it could be changed in something more realistic city, hypermodern and build industry (with ypur own saudi population). I have seen the UAE where cities like Dubai try to be the Las Vegas of the east. But it has great weakness because it counts on expats & immigration of cheap workers. The natives aren't really get the knowledge or drive to run its own economy/industry. Its more a hideout for the rich to spend & store there money there.
So hope Saudi-Arabia will follow another route to get better foundation. So it get the drive of China, mindset of Japan, vision of a golden age and a example for the Islamic world.
Go The Line!!!

One of the stupidest ideas ever proposed. Invest in your people, give grants to SMEs, invest in the education system, healthcare etc. Not this dystopian pipe dream.
In fact, our quality of life in Saudi Arabia is very good. Education, healthcare and everything I mentioned is in the best condition. Why do we circle around the comfort zone? Why don't we dream and achieve?
Strongly agree.
This would have been like living in a shopping mall that’s surrounded by 300 degree sand with the added bonus of knowing the Saudi government is watching everything u are doing.
No carbon emissions but with a ski resort in the middle of a desert. right.. right..
Still possible if it is done in phases. The idea of diversifying its economy from dependending solely on oil is a good idea.
Yeah but doing it with top down central planning is unlikely to succeed.
This is money laundering and a diversion. It was a stupid idea from the start. For me the long term future will be underground with small cities as entrence points on the surface and farms around them. We could capture all the waste products and reuse them or store them until we can find a use for them. Tech will need a lot of development but the benefites for the surface would be great. But that is if we continue with the plan of breathing as we did up until now. All this green energy talk by biggest polluters is just nonsense.
@@Shoutinthewind Look at China! It's working well for them. When you have one source of income it's better to have a top down control like a company. Better then bureaucratic delays and corruptions that often happens in democracies.

No, that’s just on weekends; when he doesn’t work…
He will finish this project for sure. When he started with reforms about women work force, driving licence etc many are skeptical... but he achieved more than he would have dreamt and more importantly people are very happy with his style of reforms. I never saw or heard any Saudi national expresssing unhappiness about his reforms.
lol, good one
Every other country allows women to drive and work. Saudi being the very last is not an achievement, it is pathetic.
We love Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and there is no Saudi citizen who does not love him, but the neighboring Arab countries are jealous and envious and always attack us
@@wordsofcheresie936 The only strange thing is that you want to attack Saudi Arabia. Saudi women used to hire a driver and were provided with all their requirements. They lived like princesses. They did not need to drive, but now they have everything. They lived like princesses, and now they live like princesses, better than the women of your country.
@@AnmarCrazyFacts-fw7rn It is well known that the average Saudi is not wealthy. Members of the royal family are wealthy, but not the vast majority of the public. Yes, Saudi women can finally drive but are you celebrating that they were the last women in the entire world to stop being treated like children? The women of Saudi wanted to drive very badly and many went to jail to try and win that right. It brings great shame to the royal family that they treat their subjects so poorly. Here is what the UN has to say about how the Royal family treats its subjects and especially its women:
"After the public review of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group report on Saudi Arabia, should serve as a blueprint for minimum measures the Saudi authorities must take to abide by their obligations under international human rights law, Amnesty International said.
The report included 354 recommendations from 135 UN member states, many of them calling on the country to take substantive measures to ensure reforms, including in relation to guaranteeing the rights freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, abolishing the death penalty, protecting migrant workers’ rights and eliminating all forms of discrimination against women.
“That so many UN member states took this opportunity to confront Saudi Arabia about its litany of human rights abuses and press the country’s authorities for reform shows that without genuine human rights reform, no amount of money spent on image laundering and sportswashing campaigns can conceal the rapidly escalating repression in the country,” said Dana Ahmed, Amnesty International’s Middle East Researcher."
Good on them. That was a pipe dream. 2.5km is doable and attainable.
No, my dear, it is not a dream. It is reality. I am an engineer in NEOM and the project is being worked on, but the American newspapers always want problems with Saudi Arabia.
@@AnmarCrazyFacts-fw7rn The project will be completed in 2060 with this pace of progression! 😄😆

MBS's media strategy is OG, guy hyped up impossible shit so much to make the VCs flock to Saudi, just to get investments. He aint no visionary, just a good PR guy
But MBS is not a good PR guy. People do not want to invest in this linear prison and that is why he can't get funding. All of the other countries realize that MBS is a fool who does not deserve his position.
Saudi Arabia does not need foreign investments. The Saudi state is the one that finances most of its projects. Saudi Arabia is not like Dubai, Singapore or Indonesia in order to need foreign investors. Rather, Saudi Arabia is rich and can build and finance its projects on its own. How many investors will pay to invest 100 billion? Saudi Arabia will cover this number in just one year.
@@wordsofcheresie936 My love, I see you attacking Saudi Arabia in comments in an extreme manner. I do not know whether Saudi Arabia did anything to you or whether you are spiteful. Saudi Arabia does not need any foreign investment. It builds its projects from its budget. It does not care whether investors come or go
@@AnmarCrazyFacts-fw7rn No one is dumb enough to invest in something like this!
@@AnmarCrazyFacts-fw7rn Check again. Saudi was desperate for foreign investors and when it couldn't get them it had to reduce the scale of the Line from 170km to 2.4 km. Why do you think that happened. Do you think it is because the Public Investment Fund didn't approve it? That is a sorry excuse because MBS is fully in control of the fund. MBS staked his reputation on the Line so he had every incentive to fund it. It was cut back when his advisors finnaly convinced him that the country was going bankrupt due to his NEOM fever dream.
Read this paragraph from a new article and weep for the foolishness of MBS:
"The pullback on The Line comes as the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund has yet to approve Neom’s budget for 2024, the people familiar with the matter said. It shows that the financial realities of the trillions of dollars of investment are starting to cause concern at the highest levels of the Saudi government as it tries to fulfill its ambitious Vision 2030 program, the overarching initiative tasked with diversifying the kingdom’s economy. "
As Vision 2030 enters its next phase, Saudi Arabia continues to build on its achievements, aiming to not only meet but exceed its ambitious goals, ensuring a sustainable and vibrant future for its citizens. This strategic vision underscores the Kingdom's commitment to transforming into a leading global player through sustainable development and innovation.

What all of this shows us very clearly is that hereditary monarchies are a very bad idea. MBS is not an intelligent man and should not be running a country. Leaders should be selected for their skill and not because of their father's last name.
It appears as a tiny toddler he was dropped more than once by his Filipina ‘mother’

Even with unlimited fund the project makes zero sense - its beyond stupid.
More than halfway through its "Saudi Vision 2030" journey, Saudi Arabia has demonstrated notable progress, with 87% of the 1,064 initiatives either completed or advancing as planned.
I do not understand why America is talking about a Saudi project related to Saudi Arabia. I have not seen Saudi Arabia talking about America or American projects. Why are they so interested in NEOM?
That's what losers always do. Instead of focusing on their problems such as borders, abortion, weapons, partisan division, etc., they prefer to magnify others' problems to make them feel better
Saudi Arabia litterly made fun of Biden in a few comedy videos. Second, Saudi Arabia tried to bankrupt the US oil industry. It has also tried to Cosy up to China while benefiting from US protection. Yet, MBS got a bit arrogant and tried to criticize the US on many occasions. So, there is no live list there. Third, I thought this was an Indian owned channel.

You are not welcome in Saudi Arabia, do not dream
I also find it hard to believe that with the calibre of people and expertise involved in the planning of this project, they somehow managed to overlook the obvious issues this project poses. Not to mention the undesirability of living there. I assumed they must have addressed all the issues, but now, after hearing about it for so long, I don't think they did. Money talks and it's likely that people just wanted to get paid. Just look at the World Islands and other projects in Dubai. Are there even enough 'Rich' people that would want to visit this place, more than once? They have squandered oil money for decades and have nothing to show for it, seems like they're getting desperate because they know it's running out.
Though it's hard project, obstacle will come, that is normal.
Something they need to cut that obstacle.
Or, they need one more Engineer like me to join with this project.
Afterthat, Niom will get success.
@@swordofGod2430 My point is, other than it being odd, or different, which would make it an attraction, there is literally no other purpose for it. Yes
"O Allaah bestow your blessings on our Shaam. O Allaah bestow your blessings on our Yemen." The people said, "O Messenger of Allaah, and our Najd." I think the third time the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said, "There (in Najd) will occur earthquakes, trials and tribulations, and from there appears the Horn of Satan."
Who even thought up the whole project, what country did it come from?
And why does this building have this shape. Is there any reason for this? I read that from a mathematical point of view, the speed of transport, a circle is more suitable.
One of the standout achievements of Vision 2030 is in tourism, where Saudi Arabia welcomed 106 million visitors in 2023, including 27.4 million international tourists, positioning it as the second fastest-growing tourism destination globally. The Kingdom also exceeded its target for Umrah performers, welcoming a record-breaking 13.56 million pilgrims last year, nearly double the baseline figure.
