The Netherlands Celebrating Liberation after WW2

  • Restaurated and Colorized excerpts from a Canadian newsreel showing recordings after the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945. People celebrate on the street. Collaborators and Dutch women who had relationships with men of the German occupying force, called "Moffenmeiden" were abused and humiliated in public, usually by having their heads shaved and painted orange
Background on the liberation: After crossing the Rhine at Wesel and Rees, Canadian, British and Polish forces entered the Netherlands from the east, liberated the eastern and northern provinces. Notable battles during this movement are the battle of Groningen and the battle of Otterlo, both in April 1945.
The western provinces, where the situation was worst, however, had to wait until the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands was negotiated on the eve of 5 May 1945 (three days before the general capitulation of Germany), in the Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen. Previously the Swedish Red Cross had been allowed to provide relief efforts, and Allied forces were allowed to airdrop food over the German-occupied territories in Operation Manna

As a german, my heart is full of pain for the people in The Netherlands and especially for this young Dutch ladies. The ocupation of The Netherlands and France was a very dark chapter in our history. Because both nations are very close relatives in the common history since the days of Roman Empire. Especially the Dutch are our „brothers and sisters“ because of century of common neighborhood, common culture and nearly the same (frisian and north-german) language. Nazi-Germany not only had conquered these countries, but also suppressed the french, belgian and Dutch population with collaboration in police, army regiments, some french and dutch SS-legions, with forced labour too. What an cruel exploitation! So we have to understand the massive anger of these people and their revenge on the poor ladies, who often acted with german occupants because of great need for their families and children. What a wonderful gift of these nations 🇳🇱 🇫🇷 🇧🇪, that we now are together nations of very good neighbors, allies, partners and friends. I love these three beautiful countries in the west of Germany, the people there have a special place in my heart. And many Germans feel the same! ❤

They didn't fly to England, they left on a British destroyer. Had England been invaded, the British Royal Family would have been evacuated to Canada so as not to be used as a propaganda tool.
The Dutch were neutral and yet were invaded and subjugated by the Germans. They suffered massive privations during the War and yet never strayed from assisting Allies when they were trying to hide. They suffered tremendously during the War. First by the German invasion and second by the Allied invasion. They lost many thousands of civilians to War and yet feel they have a 'Duty of honour' (I heard a Dutch lady say this) to recover and care for the bodies of Allies that are recovered.
It could be said that people were trying to look after their families, but many people didn't. On the other hand, after a few years of occupation by the Germans, for many people, this must have seemed as if it wasn't going to end. So, what do you do? Many people in occupied Countries just went about their lives as best they could. Not having been in such a situation, it's easy to criticise.

the men and women arrested by the Dutch resistance and police were collaborators. during Nazi occupation, countless atrocities were committed on the people and many more suffered because collaborators sold people out for both desperation and also their own personal gain. but for whatever the reason, either because they wanted food or money they needed or for positions of power and comfort to relish in, people suffered and died for many of the collaborators actions. and being publicly shamed and humiliated and nothing compared to the horrible actions committed by the Nazis through information given to them by the collaborators. although many would later face trial for treason afterwards

In order to properly restore a video you need to go back the original, or the lowest gen. copy, and follow stringent archival guidelines in the restoration process. It’s also not the regular soldier’s fault that they surrendered. They don’t make the decisions.
And as heroic as the allied forces are, they committed plenty of war crimes too. It’s not all as black and white as you make it seem. You’re generalizing an entire country over one video.

I am German, born after the war. Revenge and justice are two different things. Revenge has to do with feelings, justice has to do with spirit and intelligence, culture and social behavior. What happened was revenge by the mob. It would have been better for everyone if the justice system had dealt with the traitors and collaborators. In France it was exactly the same. Today, cracks still run through the societies of Europe, on the one hand because of the collaboration with the Nazis and on the other hand because of the revenge that was taken without a judge and without a sentence. I hope that one day the Dutch and the French will do their homework, just like the Germans did their homework.

For all the beatings starvation deportation and harsh rule of the Germans, it would be hard not to exact revenge. Sometimes love happens in the strangest ways and places. The trouble with revenge, a lot of it is indiscriminate. You are lashing out Sometimes against people who had no choice. Not every German was a Nazi or a bad person. Sometimes a victim of circumstance. Still, if I was there, under those circumstances, i might have done the same. So they got their haircut and slapped around a bit. In Germany they would have gone to a camp. So lets not forget that.

An event for the rabble. What courage is needed to humidify and harass defenseless women. The Dutch complain about the few years of the German occupation. However, they have colonized, brutally ruled and looted over the centuries of countries and peoples in overseas. In the Indonesian colonial war, the Dutch committed a number of war crimes that they are of course silent about. And not to forget: The Dutch were the leaders of African slaves in earlier centuries. With the misfortune of these people, they made great profits. The magnificent town houses in the Dutch cities have been financed with this blood money. So there is no reason for self -righteousness and moral superiority.

Plus the Dutch government is not 'silent' about its past. It seems you don't even watch Dutch news. There's no 'moral superiority' here. I do not justify oppression or human rights violations. What bothers me is the self-righteousness and one-eyedness of commentators who lament the injustice done to their ancestors, but ignore the much greater injustice their ancestors inflicted on other peoples.
The same generation of Dutch people who suffered under German occupation oppressed and plundered the peoples of Indonesia before and after World War II. In the colonial war that followed, the same generation of Dutch committed war crimes in Indonesia for which no one was ever held accountable. That is why I recommend that every people deal with the sins of their ancestors.

I understand that the German occupation of France and Holland was wrong, and what those ladies did was wrong. However, "mob justice" is equally as wrong! If these ladies committed crimes, they should have been arrested by the police. The police and the courts should have handled it, not mobs! Shaving heads, ripping off women's clothes, parading them half-naked or naked, raping them, and killing them are NOT justice! Saying it again, sexual assault, rape, and murder are NOT justice!(The rape and murder parts were not shown in these videos.) There were French and Dutch women who went through this treatment who were not collaborators. They just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. As Jesus Christ and I would have said, "If you are perfect in every way, cut off the first lock of hair!"

My grandfather on my dad's side was on the wrong side of the war. Probably a policeman working for the nazi's.
My grandmother on my mothers side was in the resistance and hid British pilots in her attic.
Fun fact: my grandmother though the British were a rude bunch and never ever respected the fact that she was trying to save their lives and get them back home safely to England (which she eventually managed to do). They would yell at her, call her names and critique her cooking. Just a bunch of rude idiots being nasty to a nice lady helping them.
She actually considered the soldiers from the Wehrmacht much more respectful to her. She would invite them for tea and give them cookies, cause they werent being fed enough by their commanders. "Those boys weren't the SS," she would always say. "They were just schoolboys who did not want to be there, but like all of us had their lives disturbed by old Adolf."
She used to call the Wehrmacht troops "Papagaaien" (Parrots), which is an old Dutch saying for the Spanish occupiers during the 80 years war. Basically "boys that are pretending to play grown soldiers." She was 93 years old when she died; survived 2 world wars. Sweetest old lady that ever lived, always stood on the streetcorner near school and gave candy to the kids cycling by, just because she was a sweet lady.
She hated the nazi's, but loved John Wayne westerns and those Austrian costumedrama's about Princes sissi etc. Later on I realised this was because that timeperiod (mid to late 19th century) was quite literally her childhood, which blew my mind.

Не смогли отстоять свою страну, прислуживали немецко-фашистским оккупантам, но после поражения Германии изображали из себя героев Сопротивления, издеваясь над женщинами. которые всегда слабее мужчин. Позор!

The US and UK were outraged about the behaviour of the ones they liberated. Said maybe it was better not to have liberated those countries in the first place since they acted the same way the Nazi regime was treating them.

Ofcours the the things that were shown can't really be justified by our own mindset of the current day, but you gotta try and view the actions throught the eyes of the people experiencing those events during that time.
Nowadays we can't imagine sacking a town to the ground, selling its population into slavery, during the times of the romans for example it was the most normal thing to do.
Also, viewing those acts and comparing them to the nazi regime... thats a bit of a stretch if you ask me, i don't deny it being said, i don't know. but whoever said it was definetly overreacting.
One partook into a couple public revenge actions, the other systematically exterminated a religous group by state degree. which is only one of the very few beautifull policies they stood for.

I understand that people wants vengence, but you can't help whom you fall in love with. One must remember that not all german soldiers were radicalised monsters. Some of them were even Communists and Socialists. Groups that Hitler despiced and put into concentrationcamps! Maybe they had to join the army to protect their families. All I'm saying here is that we should not be so quick to judge. Every case is unique. Some may have been collaborators, and some were just young teens falling in love. But the worst is that their innocent babies who were born between these women and german soldiers, were stigmatised also💔

German communist refugees from the USSR were handed over to Hitler by Stalin. Also, many socialists joined the Nazi party, Mussolini was a socialist before! What do you think those were much better?

My father , born in holland but with a German father , had to leave the Netherlands before the war started.
He and his family members ended up in an apartment in Osnabruck. In 1941 he was drafted as a mechanic in the wehrmacht. Ended up in Russia. Was lucky and fled in time in 1944, walking a 1000km on foot . His Dutch girlfriend, my mother, was glad to see him alive. He survived and my mother stood with him during the war years. He came back to Holland numerous times to see his girlfriend during the war years. The east front was the worst place to be but he survived. His sisters ended up in munition factories in Germany. They all came back to the Netherlands eventually.
