  • TP-Link Tapo 2K IP Cameras
    I've been on the hunt for some new IP security cameras to replace my older system and after considerable research I trialled the latest top of the range of wired TP-Link Tapo cameras including the brand C225. Despite anticipating a few challenges I believed they would provide me with solutions to my quite challenging demands.
    This is my video, filmed over three weeks, of me opening them up, meeting and dealing with the issues I faced, and the conclusions I drew from my life so far with these cameras, the app and the Tapo ecosystem.

    I have a c210 and generally like it, but found the microphone / speaker quality fell quite short of my old camera and was not good enough for reliable two way conversations. Can you tell any difference between the c225 and the c210 in terms of microphone sensitivity and speaker volume?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  11 місяців тому +1

      You know, I don’t think I’ve ever used the two way speak function on any of my cameras. Not sure I’ve even used it on the Ring door bell. The microphone seems to work perfectly well on all of the cameras so I can hear what is happening, but I’ve not spoken back the other way. I’d only need to do that if the dog was playing up when I was out, but she just falls asleep and waits for us to come home.

    Excellent review, but where did you get the cameras in black? I can only find tapo c210 in white.

      @ToughMonkey  Рік тому +2

      Thank you. The black dome cameras in the review are my old Victure cameras that were being replaced by the Tapos. As far as I’m aware the Tapos are only available in white.

    Thanks for the review.
    This video forgot to mention important fact that Tapo system is always accessible from the internet and therefore it is theoretically possible for anyone from the company or hacker to access your camera. And there is no way to restrict access to the local network without firewall.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  Рік тому +9

      And theoretically true of any internet enabled camera or any other internet enabled device for that matter. That’s the advantage and disadvantage of Internet Protocol devices, that they’re connected to the internet and accessible. It’s not missed from the review, it’s implied by them being IP cameras. I feel sorry for the hacker who wants to watch me wander past occasionally scratching my backside.

      Thank you. I’ve been really happy with the cameras and the app even after several months now. In fact, only last night I took delivery of the new TP-Link Tapo 520WS, the 2K outdoor dome camera. I filmed the unboxing straight after it arrived at 6:45pm and I’ll be testing it over the next week to see if it’s as good as the cameras I tested in this video.
      Thanks again.

      @@davidbell7094 as of the Black Friday deals going live on Amazon a few minutes ago, the C210 is £21.99 and the C225 is £38.90. The C320 is £36.99 vs £69.99 for the C520 (I paid £49.99 on Prime Day). The C510 is currently available at £39.99 for the marginally less well-specced dome camera.

    There is a c510w dome camera for exterior but is only available in a few markets and that one has a higher resolution I believe is 2k

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  Рік тому

      I’d like to see that in the UK but at the moment there’s no reference to it anywhere I could find. I’ve got two pan/tilt/zoom dome cams that I’ve had installed a while that I tested for Amazon from other manufacturers which I have varying views on. Sometimes I think “oh, that’s neat” and then other times I think there are some fundamental flaws. I’d like to see how the TP-Link Tapo version would fare as I’m still very impressed with the cameras I reviewed in this video after a few months of using them.

    How do you find the timeline tracking to find events? And do you know what version of iOS you need to have to get the Tapo app? I worry that I may soon need to spend a lot of money on a new phone because the app is no longer supported.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  10 місяців тому

      The timeline search is excellent. Possibly the best I’ve used. You get a timeline bar, which you can zoom in on, showing colour coded activities that you can quickly navigate to. Over Wi-Fi the playback of recordings stored on the SD cards is immediate. Very impressive.
      With regards to the app it’s a reasonable concern. Apps will normally support phones up to at least the model that the operating system supports. I don’t know about Android but the next iOS will support Apple phones back to the XR and XS (the ones before the 11 series). My usual concern is whether the camera operator will still be around to support the app and the cameras. I have several cameras that I’ve tested that I’ve not heard of the manufacturer before or after, so they’re obviously a concern. TP-Link, however, are a major player so I’m not worried about them disappearing.

    Is my C200 the same spec's as the c210 please? I have the C225 arriving from amazon today...it will be pointing outside permanently. Hopefully not to much reflection 🙏

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  11 місяців тому +4

      The c210 is a slightly upgraded version of the c200. It has a resolution of 2304x1296 (3MP) compared to 1920x1080 (Full HD), and can support 256gb memory cards compared to 128gb. The c225 is 2560x1440 (2K) and can take 512gb memory card. Be careful if you’re planning on pointing it outside through a window. It’ll be okay in daylight but in darkness the infra red will likely reflect back and you won’t see anything. You can turn off the infra Red function, but I don’t know how effective it will be in the dark through a window.

      @@ToughMonkeyI wonder if it will work very well through a window if you turn on day mode only which disables the night mode IR.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  6 місяців тому +1

      @@PointMicrosoft you’d have to turn off anything that could cause reflection against the window, no night vision, status light or spot light, and it would have to be located in a perfectly dark location to stand any chance of getting an image at night. Any moisture on the window, inside or out, would mess up focus. I’d highly recommend using an external camera and mounting it outside to get the best results.

    Hi how secure are they to have in your home my last indoor camera was hacked and someone watching us I had ezviz indoor cam.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  2 місяці тому

      That would be down to the strength of security in place on both your router and the app. Some cameras have had security issues including the ones I replaced with these Tapo ones but never heard about anyone actually being able to access the cameras.
      Tapo/TP-Link are pretty solid in my experience. I’ve not seen or heard anything to suggest to me any security issues.
      In any case, if someone wants to watch my dog snoring for hours on end or me occasionally wandering past the camera scratching my backside then that’s their loss. I’m sure Netflix would be more entertaining.

    Will TP-Link software work on your computer ?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  Рік тому

      I haven’t tried to do that before so I’ve just looked into it. TP-Link don’t make software for Windows equivalent to the Android/iOS apps. It is apparently possible to connect your cameras to Windows, but not very straight forward at all. It looks like it involves third party software and managing the ports through your router. I saw something also about emulating Android on Windows. In my experience it can quickly get messy. My Swann CCTV system that I mention in the review had some software I could install on to Windows to view the cameras but it took hours to get it set up and never worked properly so gave in.

      Just data, not Power Over Ethernet. You need to power it via the DC cable. The Ethernet cable is there in the absence of reliable WiFi coverage.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  6 місяців тому

      I haven’t got any plans to buy the C325WB currently. The price of that is almost twice what the C320 is, even today on Black Friday deals on Amazon. Like the C520 vs the C510 dome camera, the main differences are a slightly higher 2K resolution of 2688×1520 vs 2560×1440 and it has the F1.0 Super-Aperture Lens & 1/1.79''Large Sensor vs F1.61 & 1/3”….other than the obviously advertised “Colour Pro Night Vision” function.

      No, none of these three support Power Over Ethernet. The C210 and C225 don't have an ethernet port at all, only having the proprietary power port, while the C320WS does have a connection for ethernet it doesn't support POE.

      Hi, thanks for the FEEDBACK. Like all of my consumer review videos this is an accompaniment to my Amazon written reviews as stated in the title. These are my unboxing, set up, testing and personal conclusions. When footage from these cameras are extracted through the manufacturer’s software and processed through to UA-cam you would not be able to tell which footage is from which camera so I choose not to use it.
      If my pathetic three week test and honest, unpaid appraisal has let you down I do apologise for not meeting with your standards.
