- Moscow Kremlin clock strikes the small musical phrase each 15 minutes. In the first quarter of hour the phrase executes once, in the second - two times, in the third - three times, and in each full hour the clock strikes the musical phrase four times and then the clock strikes the bell once at one a.m., twice at two a.m., continuing in this way up to twelve times at 12 noon, then starts again, striking once at one p.m., twice at two p.m., up to twelve times at 12 midnight.

So do they time the march to coincide with the typical cycle of the bells or do they have a switch they can press on cue to make the bells ring whenever they want?

It looks like everything is stopping during the bell ring.
Next week it will be thirty years since I visited Moscow, the Kremlin and Red Square. I remember this clock's chime from back then. I recorded it to an audio tape. I still have the photos from back then. The entry/exit visa process for Russia and other Soviet Socialist Republics was very convoluted, even if going with a tour group, but at least there was a one-for-all visa. I was in Moscow the same day that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, and I did not find out about it until I left Russia on the 7th August 1990 via Vyborg and Vainikkala just right across the border. I still have the old Soviet one-ruble note, that has the name of the Ruble in the other 14 languages, including Georgian, Armenian, Ukrainian, Moldovan and Tajik.

I believe the melody is called the Malinovsky chime. Inside the tower are huge flat bells which play part of the national anthem several times daily after the hour strike.
I am not sure that the melody Malinovsky chime. What is it? :) The national anthem plays not every day, only oh holidays, as I know.

It was made to do the Internationale. Then someone from Nizhniy Novgorod or Rostov ' na Donu malfunctioned it.
Now it is known as the Nalinovsky chime as it derives from the word "malinovy" as it means " mild bel sound ". So, better keep marching and saluting.
