The snake metaphor in the song represents Maynard’s conflicted relationship with his estranged father during his childhood, and Maynard’s fear of becoming just like his father, (while he now raises a son that mirrors himself).
right on
Came here to explain this. Yes!
It's a soul singing to other souls. It's not just an ego being auto-tuned for his/her bank account. That's part of the reason it moves you like it does. I could be wrong, but I'm not lying. Happy New Year to all - cheers!
None of us are as good as we could be brother.
Just acknowledging this is 90% of the way forward to being better.
I always say that being a father is the worst/best thing ever. Holding my firstborn in my hands within minutes of his birth I realized immediately and beautifully that I could love unconditionally for the first time. However, I also realized horrifyingly how awful and terrible my childhood was and how much my parents had failed me. The Buddha named his son ball and chain in sanskrit. I always felt that as a parent I am not only willing to suffer for my kids but also am unable to escape that suffering. Considerately killing me indeed.
.
5 seconds in, I feel like crying already. Divorced father here, This is a very important song for me.
Same here. I ball like a baby to this song.
We are witnessing the evolution of the human soul that happens when one discovers and truly takes in and understands Tool and the energy that bursts from their music. It's an amazing journey, to watch this man spiral out and learn so much that relates directly to his current and past life experiences... This band is something special, and if you didn't realize that before I guarantee you do now.
Time for some Undertow. Do "Bottom" if you want OG Maynard releasing demons from the depths of despair, finding the strength to go on when at rock bottom.
And one of my philosophical mentors Henry Rollins is on that track! Was my favorite song until 46 and 2.
Yes - if we are goin back a bit, this one is for sure on the list.
can't wait to see how you react to Pushit, their most emotionally powerful song imo.
Hopefully the Salival version as well
But first album version then Salival version!
Yes...pushit and pushit live are amazing
My least favorite tool song. Lol. Hate when people recommend this over so many others
@@MaddSpazz2000 no
Such a great song. Enjoy man.
Ænima was my first Tool album. And this was my first favourite song 😀👍
It is just a perfect album.
Im glad you enjoyed this one. That expression of "I Dont Mind" is just so viscerally real. Every day being a dad causes a struggle in me and tears me further away of the person that Ive always been, but I dont mind.
It's about leaving behind his animosity towards his father for his lack of parenting, and embracing his role as a new father to his son.
Tool demands self reflection, if not your not listening.
YES ! H one of my favorite gotta do Eulogy next song def about him becoming a father
Hard to pick a favourite tool song but for me, this wins.
Second of the Tool Army, reporting for duty LOL. I can't wait to hear your reactions to seeing them live, Sebs. I promise you it will be the greatest concert experience of your life. I would like to request that you PLEASE post the lyrics that you're looking at so we can see them as well!! Please do a reaction to the Salival live version of Third Eye. Thanks, friend
This is definitely one of Tool's more 'beautiful' songs for me. I adore this whole album -x-
It took me over a decade to really understand this song. As a parent it makes SO MUCH SENSE.
was waiting for this one 🖤
After my daughter was born this song made me cry nearly everytime i listened to it. She honestly saved my life i know how corny that sounds but i had been on heavy drugs for years and felt trapped like i couldnt change and i had come to terms that it was going to kill me and i had expected that but the second i saw her i knew my life had forever changed and i would do anything including die for her in an instant with no thought or care given. Shes 3 now and my life has turned completely around in almost every way. Every now ad then that craving comes back amd i have that itch and all it takes is the look on her eyes when she looks at me makes that fade away.
“I feel you, touching me, changing me”. Wow!
How can I feel so sorrowful but so grateful and positive at the same time?
I wonder if Maynard realizes hes a guru To a lot of people
I am so glad that someone finally “reacted” to “H” because it is one of my favorite, underrated Tool songs. I put “reaction” in quotes because you are one of the few people here who do Tool videos that do a little bit of research (but not enough to ruin the reaction) beforehand and do more of a breakdown as opposed to a “reaction”. This makes me respect you a lot. I am a teacher and use a variety of songs for students to breakdown and analyze; I use a LOT of Tool for this purpose, mainly my seniors and college-level dual credit students. I know that “H” is technically about a father who is struggling with reconciling his past and future in relation to his child, but I have had interesting analysis from students and find that many of them see this song as about struggling with putting their past (indoctrination) aside to be their own person. I teach in the South (Tennessee) and have had students who have discussed having to struggle with thinking differently than their upbringing (especially my students who have different views on gender and sexuality than their parents/family). I am glad you gave this song (and all Tool songs, so far as I have seen) the respect that deserve and the effort of not just making this a “wow, cool song but I didn’t get it” channel like others I have seen. Great job, keep up the work and thank you for bringing some of us people, who have known how good this band is for a long time, along with you for the exploration.
@ 8:37 ..... and there you go! I saw the emotional feelings come out in you. Relax a little... this with your daughters is just a phase..it goes to one phase until another phase their entire upbringing. You're still a good father. At least you're still there for them. My father left his two daughters , my sister & I at an early age. You're doing great! I love your reactions to my favorite band...every single one of them. :)
You might check out a few more perfect circle tracks.
The most inspirational for me personally is Gravity.
Gravity for sure
Your a good dude man. Wish i could tell you the parenting get easier. Doesn't really. Just new challenges. Just keep striving to be better. This band changed me too. Still is and I've been listening for 30 years. reach out beyond. keep going. be patient. I must keep reminding myself of this...
Coming over like a storm again, to me, seems like another amazing metaphor used by tool. A storm or raincloud hanging over someones head is usually a metaphor for depression or an overwhelming emotion/trauma usually born from a past experience, therefore seeming familiar, hence the word 'again'.
In the context of parenthood, a storm could have been formed from when the parent was the child which can take the form of whatever it is that person went through, a type of abuse, strict parenting, controlling, neglectful ect.. and that storm contains all the anguish they felt. Perhaps as they grew older they were able to get out of the storm, in other words away from their parents grip, but when their own child is born it brings it all back and they're met with a dilemma of being a replica of their own parents, which is the easier route since the technique was layed out infront of you, or changing for your child so they may be happier and never have to endure the storm you carry.
It can be very hard to admit that everything you've been taught was wrong and who you became as a result is wrong, but the love of your child is overwhelming for alot of good parents and they're willing to change for them. Effectively, their child is 'consideratly killing' that part of them with love. Another beautiful lyric which I believe can be classed as an oxymoron.
There's a live recording of this song in the Lateralus tour 2002 in NY. Audio quality is questionable, but Maynard's vocals still send a chill through me every time
Every time I watch that video I get jealous of the people who were there. What a sight to behold
After listening to tool for 20+ years, I think this still maybe my favourite song
Sebs they grow up so fast these hard times will be just a flicker in your memories with them and the love they give you back makes every hard moment worth it. Love your reactions. Going to see TOOL on the 8th here in Michigan my first time ever. Been a fan since the 90s. I don't miiiiiiiiiiiiind lol
Tool is my favorite band - BY FAR. I suggest you don't rush thru Tool's songs as once you have heard them all - then comes the agonizing wait for new Tool music. Also - the "holy trinity" is not really that holy. Other songs should be heard together - but the holy trinity is 3 different songs IMO. Reflection is my favorite.
Raising twin girls as a single father, since they were 2yrs old. Hear you brother. Learned the following,(so far)....Focus doing good "right now", don't dwell screw ups before. Say your sorry, a lot. Its okay. Have fun with them and don't let them do things that annoy you. Just don't. This is big,..,Good luck friend!
Pushit, Flood, The Trinity, Part of Me all need to happen. Haven't heard you touch Opiate or Undertow yet. Let's Go!
One of my favorites. Have gone back to this one often.
Love your insight as a fellow muscian, key changes, time changes, they are all amazing muscians in this band.
Love this song! The ebb and flow is masterful.
I'm just exciting to keep up with the journey!
Awesome stuff man!!
Prob my favorite Tool song.. this one just hits so different and is cerebrally and spiritually heavy.. just a beautiful and brutal song
I know the majority of people say that this song is about his son. But this song will always be about Heroin and addiction for me personally.
'i feel this coming over like a storm again'. When you're going through withdrawals and you need to fix it hits you like a storm and it's all you can think about.
But also when the high hits you(I used to shoot up), it feels like a familiar and welcomed storm coming over you.
The snake behind me hisses what my damage could have been.
I just picture a serpent behind me in my past just pissed off because he didn't get his chance to lay his fangs into me one last time.
Totally void of hate, and killing me just the same.
Pretty self explanatory. The heroin doesn't know what it's doing It has no hate for you or for anybody it's in inanimate object or substance. But it's killing you just the same.
days away I still feel you touching me, changing me.
To me, another reference to withdrawal. After a couple days with that lingering taste of your last high. It changes you. It really turns you into someone you don't even recognize. Other addicts will understand this.
'considerately killing me'
heroin feels fucking awesome, but at the same time you're poisoning yourself, considerately.
Great song to end the year with! Happy New Year.
H. is his son devo's middle initial
My daughter is 6 now, and I wouldn’t say (to this point) that it gets easier being a parent; it just gets different. I think that’s true in life as well, it’s all about adapting to the change. I can absolutely say that I love her unconditionally and that it’s all worth it. Hang in there Sebs; you’re a beast with your Tool reactions and I’m sure doing better as a father than you give yourself credit for.
Yes!!!!’ You did it!
Thank you
Super excited for you to see them live!
Can't wait to see you react to Third Eye off the same album. That was the song I put on repeat all the time when this CD came out.. I think you're gonna love it. Happy New Year dude!
I've listened to it 100 times in the last two days lol
Between, Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. A lot of content to feed us with. And I’m here for all of it my man. Keep’em comin.
One of my favourite TOOL songs! Thank you 🙏🏻
One of my absolute favourite songs from TOOL! Great reaction as always, man! Love your content!
Happy New Year to you and your family! I can't wait for you to experience Tool live! I personally hope they perform Descending at the show I'm attending, but I'll definitely enjoy any songs they play.
If you have been loving and providing for your child you already an amazing Father. Keep being honest and loving bro. Happy New Year to you and your family.
This song never gets old. Enjoyed watching you enjoy it for the first time. Stay strong man!
Tool is Everything to me. The lyrics have helped shape me as the years go by. The music is motivation. 💯
The holy trinity is gonna BLOW YOUR MIND. You're gonna experience hallucinations.
All three songs toghether, remember.
One of the 9 times I've seen them Maynard introduced H. as (im summarizing) "you know in the cartoons when a character has an angel on on shoulder and a devil on the other telling the character what they should do? this song is about that struggle..."
Death is just a change in state. It can be mundane and everyday occurances or life changing moments. But, we die and are reborn a new person constantly. Don't let the new you be worse than the last. A lot of this album is crazy metaphysical/metaphorical.
Fun fact. 10000 days was the first album Maynard did not use some sort of effect to distort his voice. Not that he did need it but previous albums he made his voice dirty for certain parts. Check out Ticks and Leeches. Full on distortion. It is fun to listen to Maynard’s progression.
H has always been my favorite. This album has been my go to since its release.
You are the first reactor I have seen that had gotten the meaning of the song so quickly...and I've always wondered how other fathers perceived the song. Keep up the great work in 2022, man.
Dude. I just found your site last week. Your approach to not sitting on your ass looking cool compared to you walking and thinking are the most honest reactions ever. Thx for doing this song. H means a lot to me. And stop saying thank you Tool Army. You’re one of us. You always have been. 🤘🏼🇨🇦🤘🏼
This song paints a picture of new growth out of death for me. Very somber but very real. Like losing a parent but gaining a child. Those feelings come over like storm again. I don’t mind.
Just found your channel a week ago and I love all your Tool reactions. Best ones out there! "Holy Trinity" is 3 songs... Disposition, Reflection and Triad from the Lateralus album. Gotta listen to all 3 songs together. There's an awesome live video by Adrian's Lair on UA-cam. Not actual footage of the performance but some cool photos of the band in concert along with some other cool visuals. But just amazing to hear them perform this live. Settle in and enjoy this 27 minute spiritual journey! Amazing! Keep up the great work!
Wow. Im the first of army to show up. Happy New Year. Your doing a great job.
I miss the public comments but I feel like this is what you were getting at. I came into myself and try to understand who I am but at the same time a child would change the person that I am. I'm not a father and by God that is my greatest regret at 62 years old. I am sure that it would make me feel more whole as a person to know what that feels like. God bless you Happy New Year and good luck as a father
Tool songs bring out something from within.
Love this song lol, thanks sir for the reaction
A storm is pure chaos without any semblance of order. That's what he means...something unknown and unpredictable.
Honestly, growing up, and still to this day, but I believe he is talking about the drug heroin. "I feel this coming over like a storm again" (getting high on H?) "slip away, fade away. Days away, I still feel you, touching me, changing me..." (I felt this on LSD first time. Days later I could still notice the affects of the drug. [although I have NO idea if H has the same affect, yet I could imagine.]) I'd say listen to the track one more time with the drug H in mind, and the lyrics make more since than him talking about his son. I love how many people have many different interpretations. Whatever makes the song your own personal meaning, I think is all they're trying to do. Not one specific message but a vague or broad idea where your mind can settle things within itself while listening to very "trippy/psychedelic" instrumentals.
The storm to me is the love and resentment you have for your child
This Tool series on your channel is tragically under viewed and under liked. It easily deserves 10 times as many likes AND views.
I can't believe you just talked through my favorite tool riff 😳
This song always seem to mirror my feelings when my mom and dad split up and my dad moved out. My life changed immediately, as the oldest I became the man of the house literally overnight, and I couldn't express my emotions in any meaningful way. It was a really crazy time in my youth, and TOOL has helped me a lot over the years.
Listen to this daily. Such a great song. 👍
Hope u feel better soon
Lost Keys + Rosetta Stoned.. I'm sure you will appreciate. Here Tool army from Italy 🇮🇹
Tool is So Awesome❤🎉❤
Best time to listen
Were checking out tool by H. today lol
Love the reactions! Hearing it with you for the the first 😆. Can’t wait for you to do Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned for their epic trilogy.…. I think your ready brotha. 😵💫🤘👽
First Tool reaction of the year. Here's to plenty more! 🍺
Tool by H.?I love you dude still welcome to our family.
Another good review bro. Love watching your reviews and seeing a new Tool fan develop, but….. Bro, I say this on all your Tool reactions. Lost keys/Rosetta stone. I still have 5 bucks saying that you will stop walking during this song. It’s not really a deep song like H. but it’s more of a fun, DMT Acid trip with aliens song. It’s an underrated song for most because it’s a lot, but if you just enjoy it for what it is, it can become your favorite jam out song
This! 👍👍
I think I can speak for all TOOL fans we all want to see 7empest live above all other songs.
This is the song I work out to every day.
Your smile at 7:30 ish is priceless!
Pushit. Ya gotta do that one next. It’s deep dark and heavy…and just awesome.
Reactions to the Holy Trinity definitely a must!! 😎
Ok found the video …it’s called H. anthem of acceptance …by super Jesus Jackson on UA-cam….totally powerful analysis
At some point, I can't wait for you to do some of their remakes! No Quarter from Zeppelin, You Lied from Justin Chancellor's original band Peach or even Stranglehold from Ted Nugent! Even Adam's video release of his Gibson release is amazing! Can't wait for you to see them live.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! /NEW HAIR haha
You remind me of Pastor Mason from Ozark. I can sense an anger in you. A deep aggravation and you use Christianity to find peace and meaning in the midst of that aggravation. It helps you cope with what bothers you. I think Tool speaks to people who are perpetually angry or disappointed on some level and long for improvement and understanding with quiet intensity. Love your reactions brother. Very similar to mine when I first heard them
At face value the song is clearly about heroin. I always did enjoy explaining it to people who though that and how they react when they realize its about the birth of son. Only Maynard.
we must endure..
Happy new year, bro!
Please do Vicarious before you listen to Schism, and then thank me later. 😂
Always wonder what 'Blair witch project'-esque basement you film in... horror vibes over here
This is the first song in numerical order that maynard really shows his ability to sing softly
Opiate, Prison Sex, Eulogy, and Hush are good early songs also.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
There is a breakdown of this song available on UA-cam…I’ve seen it many times it’s an amazing analysis check it out …it’s called a deep dive I think
I was under the impression this was about heroin addiction.. (hence the name H.) - would also like to recommend Eulogy from the same album.
No heroin addiction
H. Is his son devo's middle initial. I thought it was about the other H. for the longest time.
I mean... It could have multiple meanings and they are not always specific to Maynard.
This is why its my favorite Tool song. Both interpretations fit so well.. Its hard to imagine it wasnt planned that way. Its clearly about his relationship with his father and son once you have that context. But without context? Easily still about heroin addiction.
