I’ve learned that Pigpen Ron McKearnan was a very kind person and read once that he would take care of other band members kids when they were on solo tours.
Honored to be in nice gatherings- DeaD Jams kept Us Twirling- Smiling cuz Most Venues on West Coast wanted Happy Times- Thanks to All who keep thee Music Alive
Being a rock star has got to be tough on the humility bone. And though the Dead didn't start out as "stars" but instead were thought of (and thought of themselves) as underground/underneath the buzz, all of them eventually got a bit of the star bug. Certainly all four who were left, and Jerry as much as anyone. All except the Pig. He was the coolest dude I ever saw, but it was all real--no feathers, no fluff, no airs, no bluff. When I saw him, I always felt good inside, all the way through.
Pig was the front man because the dead played their best when backing him. When will the dead put out a double cd best of Pigpen? A box set would be better yet!
Man, this grate sounding Pigpen for sure. It was so cool to have the band just back him up. They definatly got better as a band just playing behind him.
They are so tight behind him. It's like they're channeling James Brown's Famous Flames. I love this and have listened to a lot of Dead since seeing them first in '81 and I've somehow missed this. Thanks to @gratefulvideo for posting this! (12 years ago!)
@Patrick272012 Pat i gotta agree, for the dead, those songs died a little bit the day pigpen died... A lot of them fell right out of their repertoire, with the very best being rekindled later in a somewhat disappointing manner... And I always disliked the way pigpen and jerry struggled to lead the long jams sometimes, and usually felt that pigpen was going in a direction that the music wasn't flowing in... In other words, I am not pigpens biggest fan, but everything you said about him is true!

Always loved pigpen. These years produced some of their coolest jams. Also Bobby’s rhythm riffing here is so smooth and on point.
Always want this music
My favorite for sure
i love the outpouring of love for pigpen here
Ron McKernan was born on 8 September 1945 in San Bruno, California,
