Dragon Ball was a huge deal for me growing up. I still love that universe to death. And Chrono Trigger and its characters are also so dear to me. Toriyama was such a legend and will be missed.
I really appreciate Stephen Totilo being willing to share a story like his 1080 Snowboarding story. A lot of times when people share "embarassing" stories, they find a way to subtly show off their accomplishments ("I said bless you instead of excuse me at the exclusive White House dinner I go to sometimes, no big deal"), but this one actually took a lot of vulnerability to admit. It's a good reminder to us that even really well-accomplished people have failures like the rest of us and that it doesn't damn us from still being or becoming successful.
1:46:52 Endless Ocean: Luminous is being developed by Arika, who developed the original series as well as being Nintendo's primary partner for developing their battle royale style games (Tetris 99 and Super Mario 35) on the Switch. 2:26:45 wow how opposite we are I've been drooling over those pastel yellow and pink joycons since they got revealed, and i'm personally very thankful for the joycons being different colours, and would never go for the same colour on both haha.
I'm with Kit 100% on his Queens Blood feelings. I didn't realize I could skip the boat tournament until the 3rd round and immediately skipped when I found the option. I agree that hitting the area you're forced to play was annoying (I don't recall a way to bypass), however the 3 games were surprisingly easy enough. The game rules though overall.
I enjoy these guests that are inserted into the podcast via pre-recorded video even more lately. Waiting to see Kit's abrupt "Andwe'reback!" startle Krysta is quite entertaining lol
Let’s go! Here’s to this being another fun episode. 😁 Update: Great episode! You’re off to an awesome start in 2024. Also, thank you for answering my question from 2:22:20 to 2:26:58, regarding your favorite color for video game consoles. I’m looking forward to the next generation design and color scheme!
Balatro is great! I was hesitant at first because I’m not big into Poker - and then had to wait for it to get put back up on the eshop - but really love it! When your cards and multipliers combine it’s a great feeling! My highest score in a single hand is 2 million so far. Definitely has that ‘One more go…’ quality that has seen me regularly playing it till 2-3am!
I think the Rebirth sales numbers are normal considering it's only on PS5 and PS5 has less adoption than PS4. Personally I am a PC/Switch only gamer, and I will get the game once it comes to PC. It feels like PC has the biggest install base by far this generation and companies like Sony are starting to realize and embrace that with games like HellDivers 2 - Rebirth sales will explode when it comes to PC, I just hope that is ASAP. Same can be said for FF16, it's still not on PC, but they're disappointed by the sales...
7:25 my regret of letting items go was I sold my original Pokémon collection of games for a HTC VIVE and I’ve spent the past three years slowly buying everything back because they’re such a precious part of my childhood and growing up! I feel you kit, keep what you deem special and important!❤
Queens Blood is great. Playing the tournament on the cruise ship was pure fun. Personally, I like to do as much side content as possible. Queens Blood is almost as fun as Gwent!
I know that he was not as "big" as Toriyama...but I wish that Murayama would also have received more love after his passing, as well. It's been a sad, sad year so far.
I felt the same way after listening to the Gene Park interview but it sounds so exhausting to be a journalist in today's media world. Just seems like a never ending treadmill of trying to prove to the money people that your work matters, meanwhile more of the audience moves to influencer style content.
Recent subscriber here, would love yall to have Stephen back again next year post Switch 2 release to talk about the coverage during the release window.
1:23:48 If Nintendo are not revealing the developer of Princess Peach Showtime due to a stigma around Good Feel as a developer, I find that quite ironic as my expectations of the game were lowered due to my own speculation that it would be the the “next Yoshi Game”. I have loved the most recent Yoshi games but this made me realise that this won’t be a game of the year contender
Low game sales are not shocking. People are BROKE.. stores are closing, sales are low.. it’s not a surprising that FF7 Remake sold better. People had money to spend during the lock down, and games sales were just higher in general at that time.
I wonder if the much shorter PS5 exclusivity window for Rebirth compared to Remake & FFXVI may have factored into sales. I don't recall Remake's window, but XVI was stated to be exclusive for a year while Rebirth is only exclusive for 3 months. Not that Square has formally announced a PC port for Rebirth for May yet, but I bet a lot of folks are hoping
There's something very fitting about mr Tanabe being into Baby Metal, I hope he gets to do a collab on something like end credits of Prime 4 or something.
It's cool they use demo to monitor purchases but I don't buy games right after demos. I have plenty of games to play so I'll only buy a game based off of a demo right away if it's really really good.
On the topic of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's sales. Maybe there is a lack of communication to a wider audience that can explain the drop in sales. The first one was very clearly marked as a remake. If you're not following any game news, you probably don't know that it's a multi part game that's coming out over multiple years. I wonder if naming it "FF7 Remake part 2 " could've helped, but who knows.
1:40:40 God I'm so there with you Kit, this freaking card minigames (and more) are just a drag. I get these games (Final Fantasy) aren't the traditional experience and having some other stuff thrown into them is part of what makes 7 the game it is, but... it's too much. They cranked it up to 11 compared to the last game. EVERY time you go somewhere you're railroaded into playing a minigames! Costa del Sol and The Gold Saucer are egregious with how much time they force you to spend playing these side things, and then every other area has a minigame of their own, and some sidequests too! Worst part is that most of the time they don't actually drive any narrative point except of "spend time with your friends. Is this their way of making a "big" game? I'm spending more time than I want with the game because I have to keep grinding and meeting the minimum threshold to "pass" some minigame checks. By the time I'm given free reign of a region I'm already tired for the session 😅 Hojo's appearance at Costal del Sol doesn't need for you to run around playing all the games known to man to get a freaking swimsuit. Barret disappearing after the shooter doesn't require for you to try every single attraction at the Gold Saucer either!
I could not disagree more. Queen’s Blood is so much fun and I love the mini games in Rebirth. It offers good variety of gameplay. If you don’t like the mini games, then ignore them. You don’t have to dig deep into them. They’re present for people like me that like to get side tracked with side activities and have more things to do in world.
@@LoomDoom Awesome, good for you for liking minigames. Please, that couldn't be more of a lie. The card minigame might be optional on the ship, but the fact remains that you're railroaded into minigames through the entire game, they are not "side things", they have become the main thing.
I know this is a weak defense, but getting railroaded into minigames was a big part of the original FF7. It was very frequent, often without much rhyme or reason, and a lot of people loved it. It makes sense the remake would do the same, for better or worse.
@kit & Krysta, Is it an idea to talk about Team 0% (issmmbeatenyet) about trying to beat all not beaten Mario Maker 1 levels. At this moment there is only 1 level left.
I kid you not, I DESPISE Queen’s Blood. I didn’t know about being able to back out of the tournament on the ship, and I’d not bothered with the minigame up to that point. I HATED the cruise ship so much. FF7 was notorious for minigames, but MY GOD I HATE when games make minigames mandatory for story progression. I spent 3 hours having to teach myself how to play a minigame that I didn’t care for, didn’t like, have no interest in learning or playing again. I was totally expecting Gold Saucer to blow me away. It did. It was made even better my me NOT needing to play QB. It was my biggest fear; making this phenomenal area, then forcing me to do something I don’t care for. Then you do the Corel Prison arc later where they make it mandatory again. Rebirth so far is a 95/100 for me, but my god QB does stop it being a perfect game. They even improved Fort Condor from Intermission! THAT was great! That was so much fun! It was quirky, tied into a side quest, and was OPTIONAL.
Agreed. I probably don’t hate Queensblood as much as you, but I just don’t care for it. Chapter 5 was definitely my least favorite chapter. Chapter 8, Corel/Gold Saucer is definitely one of my favorite chapters, but the Corel Prison definitely dragged it down a bit. I still 100% the whole game before beating it.
To Krysta's point about Nintendo having no strategy behind their demos, let me clarify further in that Nintendo has no strategy period. This will be proven evident, once again, with the switch successor. It will fail to sell 50mil lifetime.
I hear you about Nintendo, but Kotaku became a political driven site that stopped caring about "games" thats why they are failing, and cant be honest about it.
Kotaku is also doing clickbait headlines and shown to push misinformation in their articles in recent years. They'll cite almost anyone and anything as long as a clickbait article can be published from it. Speaking of citing, Kotaku also plagiarizes a lot of their articles and take other people's research work (such as community dataminers in the video game space) without giving proper credit.
I had my suspicions before but its apparent that you are a bad faith actor with this dogwhistle-laden comment. The irony of saying so with a Persona 5 icon is hysterical to me lol

Stephen Totilo has always been one of my favorite games journalists, even long before his Wii U in the airport fame hahaha, fantastic guest!
My neighbour Totilo! I really miss his Kotaku era. Totilo, Tim Rogers, Mike Fahey, Patricia Hernandez. What a team.
That's time is really nostalgic to me, golden era of Kotaku imo
