Grumman became the fuhrer because he was the highest ranking officer left after the remaining generals alive of the staff were arrested. Since Mustang was already seen as too young for his rank and many in the military were envious of him it would have probably brought troubles if he had become fuhrer right away.
This way he can show that his actions were only to save the country and not to take power, he is able to try his hand managing the Eastern Area and fixing the wrongs toward Ishvalans. Grumman was the one who trained him and gave him the opportunities to climb the ladder in Eastern Command so he is well placed to become the next fuhrer.
Not saying that Grumman shouldn't have been fuhrer, but what about Olivier? Is she not a general and was she not at Central Command at the end? Maybe it's because it would be too difficult to convince the public that she wasn't a traitor? Or maybe she didn't want to be? Just curious cause it's been a while since I've watched the series in a non-reaction format

Grumman was a Lieutenant General, while Olivier was a Major General, which is one rank lower. Also, Grumman is way older, so it probably was easier choice.

Alphonse is such a sweetheart he's literally just saying "when paying a debt give more than what was given to you as an act of goodwill." Really adds on to the strength of connections, people feel closer when you give more than what they expect. Shows that you value them beyond material neds
Also I love how they show how much Edward has physically and mentally grown by having him hug Winry. Beforehand he was shorter than her, and at the end he's grown enough as a person to be the kind of guy who can value others as much as himself
I will be honest and say i dont get that math. The sum will remain the same. The only thing that is significantly different is that someone might not be able to handle bad times with a 10 but might pull through with 11. And then throw it back to someone who need it. Its the only way that makes sense to me but i doubt i am correct on this specific matter.
@@mordredvonumbra154 Except think about if the person who received 11 decides to retaliate in the same way? They receive 11, and decide to give 12. The value continues to increase with every exchange. In which case people have more than just an "equal favor" relationship. Everyone ends up with "more than" they originally had, instead of an amount "equal" to what they had. It is meant to represent how both sides need to be okay with losing a little bit because in the long run it works out far better.
Think about it. It's why Ed is willing to give up alchemy in the end. He puts in more than he gave. Note how he didn't get his leg back. But he's okay with that because he got his brother's body back. He was willing to put in more than what he could have (he was offered two philosopher's stones and turned them both down), to get less than what he put in.
It's all about goodwill. It's meant to be a great representation of the brothers' journey over the story. Humans are strong when they work together. But their relationships won't grow if equivalent exchange is applied to them. You have to be willing to put in more than what the other person has, because it motivates them to do the same. And eventually you grow to care about one another because one good turn deserves another
Kinda like the concept of paying it forward. Instead of just repaying the debt, you'd give (give back or give to other people) a little extra when you can.
@@ApexGale With one thing i have to disagree. Putting in more work than the other side never motivates the other side to give more aswell. People do their best only if they give, not when they receive. The rest makes sense i will agree with that.
The whole thing reminded me of people who started with a hairclip or something like that and traded it of for something slightly better. And in the end they have a car or a even a house. There were cases were it really worked, you can get something really big out of something that started very small

The fact that they're STILL traumatized by what happened with Nina is such a great touch. If you think about it, the Tuckers really weren't important to the plot moving forward, like, at all. But for the audience AND the characters, it was an incredibly emotional moment in the series that doesn't just go away or get forgotten.
It was the prime example of alchemy gone wrong. I'd say it was easily more taboo that Izumi trying to revive her kid or The Elrics reviving their mother.
I am still traumatized to what happened to Nina and i watched this years ago. I will never forgive them for killing her off like that.

This show really has a amazing soundtrack. One of many ways an anime can elevate a manga/story.
I would say that OST is one of greatest thing about anime in general.

Just in case you didn't know, the reason why Ed and Winry didn't kiss at the end is because the mangaka wasn't good at drawing people kissing, that's why she added the emotional weight into the proposal instead.

i like Grumman becoming fuhrer at the end, because it exemplifies the fact that throughout the story he was only really helping because it serves his personal goals too but not in a selfish way, more a 'rising tide lifts all ships' kind of way, almost like pixis in AoT

The brothers earned this ending and it's one of my all time favorite endings in anything but also don't know if anyone mentioned this but pretty sure old man Grumman is also Riza's grandfather at least I feel like I read that somewhere in the manga

The Mangaka has said she drew them hugging at the train because she didn't know how to draw kissing well at the time lol. She's also said she doesn't plan on ever doing a sequel, but if she did, it would probably focus on Mustang's rise to Fuher.
Grumman, the old guy, was selected as the Fuhrer by Olivier and Roy because he was the most senior officer of the group, but Grumman implied that he'd retire and give Mustang the position with time. So in between the final battle and the pictures, which is roughly 12 years, Roy has risen to a "three-star" General, which is the second highest-rank in the Military. Which means he is positioned to become the Fuhrer when Grumman finally retires. Edward meanwhile can't perform Alchemy, but he maintains all his scientific and chemical knowledge, which to me, means he could become a fantastic Doctor like Winry's parents.
Ed dressing and wearing his hair like Hohenheim's gets me in the feels

Something I love about FMA is that all the characters were useful and developed thorought the whole show, a lot of animes tend to just focused on two main characters and forget about the others

The most fulfilling and satisfying finale
Such a fantastic end to such a fantastic series! Hiromi Arakawa is a legend, in the early 2000s she really helped push the shounen genre to new heights, and broke the glass ceiling for other women to start doing their own. When she first started publishing the series in 2001, she had to do it under a male pen name because she had been rejected so many times by male editors, some of whom literally told her "women can't write shounen". Gotta wonder how many great stories have never been heard because of crap like that.

I've been suggesting this on a few reaction channels, but have you guys considered reacting to an older, shorter show? A Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop, etc? There's not many reactions to these shows out there, they are short, and they are amazing.

@@lazyshoggy It's seriously my favorite anime of all time, and essentially no one on UA-cam has watched it. The main reason I suggested shorter shows is, people finish a season of something (my hero, as an example) and then pick up another 60+ episode show to fill the space until the next season, which means they inevitably aren't finished it by the time the next season rolls around. Why not take something shorter, like GitS, or even Claymore, and you can finish it easily in between seasons.
Its essential to check if proposed show hasnt been seen by them yet.

It is the loveliest, dorkiest proposal in history, and it's just so perfect for them. Ed treats it like an alchemy problem, and Winry starts treating it like an engineering problem.
That train scene looked a lot more like Central Europe near the Alps
tbh. Fucking loved this ending, never get bored of it.
I am afraid that i havent learned how to use words beautifully since the last time i tried to make a good FMAB ending comment so i guess i will not try and just quickly say what i think. So many overlaying subplots while being their own storylines. All of them finished and with so many interesting twists. The ending with a very well and beautifully explained life moral. You cant overpower the world. You cant simply win by only getting rid of your faults. The only thing you can do is stand tall and smile while showing middle finger to the cruel world. Defiance and perserverance to survive the world. Cause it will always defeat you at some point. But if it will break you is up to the strength of your heart/mind/soul. And at times, it can be defiant enough to hold on while the waves try to sweep you of your feet.
And yet i ranted. Either way the woman that created this story has my eternal respect and gratitude for creating this story, characters and most importantly - moral of the story.

12:27 The show drives it home. Sacrifices are necessary. Mustang losing his eyes is poetic, he even explains why. Even more so, if Hawkeye would become his eyes.
It could have been made that the last of the philosopher's stone were only enough for one last "human transmutation" and Mustang then suggests Havoc. He needs it more, I think. Assuming that all his lower half functions are paralyzed. If you catch my drift. I'm assuming it's a spine issue. *THEN.* What happens in the end credits then is that instead of a mustache, Mustang gets a working prosthetic automail-like eye! How cool would that be? Instead of an effing mustache.

Hasan Ahmed Hasan Ahmed in japanese culture, traditional/old fashioned proposals are often indirect and not paired with an elaborate or huge gesture with a ring and kneeling down. aka, instead of a “will you marry me?” someone might say “I want to eat breakfast with you every day,” “from here onward, please be by my side,” “do you want to grow old together?” “I want to be a family,” etc., though modern japanese proposals are a bit less like this. edward’s statement about devoting half his life to winry definitely counts as a proposal by these standards, & a lot of japanese viewers have pointed this out as well🍓

The best anime with perfect ending
Now that's what I call a fuckin conclusive, satisfying, happy as fuck ending that leaves you with good feelings. The ending plays a big role in the enjoyment one gets from a series, especially after it's done. Makes you look back and go "That was one hell of a ride".
I need more stories with endings like this, brodas and sistas. Recommendations?
The only other ending that gave me this much satisfaction is the most recent seasons of Monogatari Series, Owarimonogatari 2nd Season and Zokuowarimonogatari filled me with satisfaction to the brim.

Please check out Gakuen babysitters. Its only one season but I really think you'll love it. Its a slice of life comedy. A few tearful things in the beginning but mostly good times after that.
