  • Restoration of a homemade gasoline bullet lighter created in world war II. These lighters were made by the soldiers themselves from casings and bullets from used cartridges, flint and wick. This lighter lay in the ground for a long time at the site of the battle, until it was found using a metal detector. This video shows the entire restoration process.

    I can't help but feel like the handler just buffed the story right out of the artefact...what i meant is that original blue patina on this? -super nice and only deposits itself with age. Can a true restoration be done where the patina remains intact and the relic is bought back to life? That would be a restoration. This is now no different than a brand new piece. There were even replaced parts where the originals could have still been used.
    Still an interesting vid to watch and the trench art bullet lighter will be around for another few generations. Good job on showing how to replace the fundamentals and saving another piece👍

    Looks like the brass from two 8mm rounds, & one 9mm parabellum. I froze the video at different points, but couldn't read any of the headstamps.

    • @rustyrussian230
      @rustyrussian230  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, it looks like it, but unfortunately, I can't say for sure. There are too many options for marking cartridges.

    • @bronxcheer031
      @bronxcheer031 3 роки тому +3

      The rifle cartridges are 7.92×57mm Mauser and judging by the marking "P207" on the headstamp, they were manufactured by Metallwerk Odertal GmbH, Odertal. Did not see the headstamp on the pistol casing but is likely 9mm parabellum as you say.

      Thank you for your appreciation of my work!! I am not a historian, and I also did not submit this object for historical examination. Therefore, the specified production period is an assumption, but all data indicate that this is the work of the second world war period. Thank you again and good luck!!!

    Good job, lad! -A fine example.
    I particularly like the sturdy spark-wheel and flint assembly of this piece. The soldier who originally fashioned this lighter did an excellent job on the spark/flint apparatus. 'Did you make a new spark wheel? Uwe the original? Take one from a BIC? Spark wheels are almost impossible to make from scratch. The last patent for one was from Gillette in 1974 and they are not simple! -Probably for the disposable BIC.
    I own a Russian trench lighter -WWI . Oddly made from a Webley .455
    Enthusiasts:
    ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE TRENCH LIGHTER UPON WHICH YOU ARE WORKING DOES NOT CONTAIN A LIVE PRIMER. Occasionally, soldiers crafted these lighters from UNUSED rounds with live primers. It is extremely unlikely that a live primer in a trench lighter would ignite; still, it could spoil your fag, cigar, pipe, day, week, life (check one).
