  • Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech. Never heard of it? Neither did Tim Schut’s neurologist who has been practicing medicine for 45 years; and the same for Tim’s speech pathologist. PPAOS is a rare disease - less than one in a million. In this TEDx talk Tim shares all about his diagnosis and about his journey to proactively ensure that when he does lose his total ability to speak, there is nothing that he won’t be prepared for. On June 21, 2021 Tim Schut was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech, a very rare brain neurodegenerative disease. Medical Professionals first discovered PPAOS as a brain neurodegenerative disease in 2010 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Tim has been given a 10-15 year life expectancy since his PPAOS diagnosis. His goal in that time is to cherish his family, build up his community, and now bring awareness to this disease as there is currently no developed treatments or cure. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think my mom has this, I thought it was isolation from Covid, doctors did MRI, everything, and nothing came back. My mom sounds like you and I cant believe I found this. I am so glad you posted. It may help her somehow, and this gives me comfort knowing she is not alone in this. It has been isolating and has caused issues. Thankyou for posting this. It helps.

I have Childhood Apraxia of Speech which comes from Birth. I was diagnosed in 2002 or 2003 at the Mayo Clinic In Minnesota, I actually said my first word at 5 year old at the Mayo Clinic after being non-verbal first 5 years of my life. I went to speech therapy for at least 10 year. My speech is fine now only words that I do not say often that I have trouble with and if i'm in an loud environment other people might have hard time understanding me.
