How We Shear Our Angora Rabbits

  • Love angora rabbit fiber? Ever wonder how it's harvested? Lots of people are curious how it's done! I've had a lot of people want to know, so, here you go! The rabbit is not harmed or hurt in the process. You have to treat them calmly and gently, so they are easy to handle and harvest goes smoothly. They learn quickly that shearing is no big deal and they just get a little bored and restless towards the end.

    Ok. At a first glance I was like, 'So where's the rabbit?' It looked like a wig.

    Meanwhile people think that ALL angora rabbits are sheared in a cruel way because propaganda peta videos told them so.

      Oh The Mirth, like you care anyway. This is a pet rabbit daa! Do you think farmers have time to care and take their time when there are high demand for rabbit fur. If you like fur you do not need to justify we know you do not care no matter how you pretend to care.

      Sara Tesfaye no she doesn't give a shiy. Make the bitch sut a day in a Chinese fur farm listening to bunnies scream while having their hair ripped out, the dumb bitch might change her tune.

      Not all the people do that!!! But what peta told was also not a false news....some people do practise things like that which should not be allowed

      @@PoohvlogsWhat about the time they tried to make a link between autism and dairy products, saying that you get autism from milk, as opposed to to it, you know, being part of them when they were born. They are most certainly false news, and everyone knows that, they’re very well known for it in fact, I most certainly wouldn’t trust anything they say, especially since they themselves probably have killed more animals than any other organisation.

      If anything, that video makes it clear how important it is to only buy from ethical shearers, or to shear them yourself. Great evil in the world does exist, and there are also many shades of gray. Buy ethically!

      Because they only care about profit. Sometimes making a bit less money and doing things a kind way is better, for the animals and people.

      @@strangertobluewater lmao i mean it would take 2-3 days more AT MOST. But angoras won't grow this much fur for like 4 more months. So it's not about profit, they're just inhumane.

    Finally a method to groom an angora without pulling or using electric clippers. I was going to get rid of an angora buck I recently purchased because grooming was more daunting than I had supposed. I knew there would be a job keeping him looking and feeling good, but after watching a lot of videos, I thought, no, this is not for either of us. THEN, I stumbled on to your video and thought, hey, even I can do that. So, now my lovable rabbit and I can plan our future TOGETHER. A BIG THANKS!!!!

    Are these safer than scissors? I cringe when I see scissors knowing the accidents that happen.

    • @katrinamichaels6603
      @katrinamichaels6603  8 років тому +7

      +Eli Edgecomb It is about the same as scissors. You DO have to be careful and accidents do occasionally happen, but when you're working carefully with scissors or snips they are much less frequent, and the knicks bare scratches that don't draw blood. Mechanical clippers I've found need much more care, so I use them as little as possible.

    • @katrinamichaels6603

      +OnaQuest forFiber It depends on the weather and the grooming time I have available. This is a 6 month coat on her. Most breeding stock I clip down every 3-5 months depending on the upkeep needed and I get 3.5"-5" staple lengths typically.

    I had a Persian cat and I tried to cut some hair that was knotted and I cut the rabbits skin, after that I got an battery operated clippers and that worked pretty good until I was able to take it to a groomer. it looks pretty dangerous to trim an Angora rabbit.

      There are multiple breeds of rabbits that are all Angoras. The one in the video is an English Angora. There are also French Angoras, German Angoras, Giant Angoras, and Satin Angoras. The one you saw in the store was probably a different breed.

      @SiviRabbitLady 8 років тому +1

      +Patsy Gorveatte
      Rabbits have sensetive skin så shearing by hand is much better then rough plucking, you can do light plucking to get the loose fur.

    • @katrinamichaels6603
      @katrinamichaels6603  8 років тому

      +Patsy Gorveatte I don't typically pluck my english, they are for the most part non molting. My french and satins shed their entire coat in handfuls at once, where my english will often hold a coat for 6-12 months, and just shed a few hairs at a time. I don't always want to keep up with grooming for that long, so usually clip them down when it gets acceptable spinning length. I will pluck them if we hit a heat wave here and the english start massively shedding en masse

    • @jodym812
      @jodym812 7 років тому +7

      plucking seriously how about next time you go to the hair salon you have them pluck your hairs out instead of cutting it.....then maybe you will answer your own question

    • @wms72
      @wms72 6 років тому +1

      Jody m I think (hope) they only "pluck" the hairs that have already fallen during the molting season.

      +Janet Mayberry They are thread snips, I buy mine on Amazon by the dozen very inexpensively. They don't hold the sharpness for more than 5-6 clips, but at $1.25 or so each it works for me.

  • @juliag3374

    do you think it would be possible to make a fur jacket out of angoras fur without killing the animal(and doing it humanely)?

    • @Rastarunt
      @Rastarunt 7 років тому +1

      you don't kill the animal for it's hair. It's combed or given a haircut, yarn is made from the fiber, then knitted into whatever you want.

    i would prefer these rabbits go to people who WILL use their wool rather than some pet home. I have rescued way too many PET angoras (and lionheads) that were absolutely despicably neglected. it's like these people didn't know they HAD TO DO THIS.... like they were doing the rabbit a favor by letting that fur grow until it was just one solid dreadlock that covered their entire body.
    they would have sores hiding under those knots, flaky skin, BUGS.... and half the time the rabbit was emaciated. but who would know?? you couldn't even feel the body condition. One particular rabbit even had a solid knot around its privates.
