I love your videos! I'm not sure if you'll see this comment, so if anybody could touch on this for me I'd appreciate it!
How do you start your witch journey? I feel a call towards this path, but I have no idea how to start! I've read and listened to so many videos and I'm so confused on where to begin.
Thank you for your time, blessings to you. ❤

It can definitely be overwhelming! There's so much information out there. I would start by just observing and honoring the cycles of the moon (Full and New). That can be as simple as lighting a candle and meditating and setting intentions for that moon cycle. You can also add celebrating the changing of the seasons - the solstices and equinoxes. Witchcraft is first and foremost an Earth-based practice, and at least recognize her cycles and what She provides for us is important. As for other practices, you can honestly start with whatever interests you - crystal healing, divination, herbal healing, spell work, etc. The beautiful thing about this path is there's so formula or set rules. Do whatever you feel called to do.

thank you so much for your comment and question, we love this as an idea for a video, so keep your eye out for a future one, but for now, I say trust your intuition, watching videos and reading books is great but as you say it can be confusing, so ask yourself, what are you drawn to naturally? what kind of elements, seasons, do you feel pulled to the moon, the earth, the sea etc? Briefly my witch journey started as a child (not that I knew it then) I was always in the garden, drawn to nature and creativity, making 'potions'. As an adult I struggled because I too, got confused with so much contradictory information and lists of weird ingredients and tools I couldn't afford, it put me off for a long time until I met a friend, who used just a piece of paper, a pen and candles, it really opened me up to the fact that you don't need all the stuff.
I recommend you read Witch by Lisa Lister, it felt like coming home for me, it explains all the different things to answer your question fully, in a no nonsense way and you will gain so much clarity from it. And if you feel called, I make Circle of Witches zines, they are seasonal and have easy to follow things in like spells, tapping into your cycles, etc, I can't link in comments, but I am called Dotty Delightful on all social media and have a shop on Etsy with the same name. - Ruby x

Trust that call. I would start simply by connecting with nature. You could go for forest walks or sit with trees and plants and connecting with them, maditating with them. That is a great starting point. All the best on your journey!

So, I look at the Halloween witch as a make-believe character. The reason it doesn’t bother me is because I know it’s not what a “real” witch really looks like. I’ve practiced nearly 50 years, but have always (and still do) love dressing up as a witch character at Halloween.
What bothers me is when someone CLAIMS to be a witch, and goes around dressing like those characters every day in order to prove how witchy they are.
The ignorance about the practice, even within the community, is most irritating to me.

Another cracking one Crones. I think its good for us witches to wear the stereotypical stuff as it feels like we are reclaiming negative stereotypes and positively owning it. The same as us reclaiming the words crone and hag or the gay community using queer. The traditional clothes of rural Welsh women were very similar to that of the witch

I agree about reclaiming and changing negative perceptions. This can be a thorny issue to step through as so many of these words and associations have been used to divide and oppress people with dire and devestating consequences. Important to know where these associations come from to unpick them, understand and hopefully help us avoid history repeating.
It is definitely interesting how similar welsh traditional rural clothing is to the stereotypical clothing associated with witches. Thanks for joining in the conversation. ☕️ - Ayesha

My friend & I just LOOOVE your Coffee Chats! We spend many hours chatting about what works for us with our practices. She’s an Earth Sign & I a Water Sign. It’s refreshing to hear you don’t fall into one category… label… because we don’t. I feel it’s limiting. As my gifts expand they lead me to all kinds of new avenues of the craft. So if I label myself as this or that it closes off SO much! I must add though… I may be stronger in one area than another because I am a Water Sign & what comes with being so watery… if that makes sense. I like to think our ancestors are honored by being so open to being who we are, & sharing our gifts that they passed on to us! Thank you for sharing & honoring them as well! I must add I just adore how different the three of you are & how respectful you are of those differences! Just fabulous!

When it comes to types of witches, I've heard many use the term eclectic, representing a more personal practice deriving beliefs and ideas from a range of different traditions, cultures and religions and use what feels right - I guess I'd call myself that as well since in my craft, I incorporate what resonates with me but it often comes from different sources. I'd love to hear more about how you first stepped onto this path and how you found your community, if you are willing to share the story in upcoming sessions. My heart is wounded thinking about my sisters who were innocent dying horrible deaths at the hands of “Christians “. King James who over saw the translation of the Bible and instrumental in the witch hunts is not held in high regard by me. I think he changed many words and meanings in the scriptures. He hated women and had many male lovers. This is one reason why I follow the Wise Woman way. We are the givers of life, healers, comforters… we matter and always have…we have been pushed to the very bottom and been portrayed as sinners, whores, evil, ugly, the bane of humanity by those who hate us. We rose above because we are strong, intelligent, wise, and beautiful…full of light as the Creator made us. I inherited my cauldrons from my great grandmother Catherine who came to America from Belfast,Co.Antrim, Northern Ireland. I have great love and respect for them and they will be passed down to my children and granddaughters. As far as a tattoo…I’m 69 and I too have Virgin skin. I want to get a henna tattoo. They look beautiful and wear off over time. I don’t want anything permanent. Lovely video ladies. Always so good to spend time with you. Blessed be

The truth is that the Catholic church has murdered millions
...the crusades, the Spanish inquisition, the brutal colonization of the Americas, molestation of children and women by priests as well as burning many at the stake for being witches....

In regards to the besom and what was shared about the types of wood used, etc., and how the besom is round vs the long flat broom...as you were explaining this, Cindy, I got the vision of a tree & how the besom represents it - the male rod of the besom being the tree trunk that provides strength to the tree, and the female bristles representing the roots that ground it. I will never see my besom the same ever again! ❤

I'm in the process of rekindling my childhood gifts, after yrs & yrs of stifling them due to negative social & pious christian views of witches...and being told & treated like I'm a whack job for what I naturally 'know'. Another topic that I would be highly interested in would be one on the Witch Wound...which I believe I suffer deeply from! Cindy spoke of past life regressions - I'd also lovelovelove a deeper talk on that subject as well, as my Witch Wound must come from my either personally being a past life witch, or possibly, an eye witness to those horrors? Here's the funny thing...I was not brought up in the christian church, that religion was pitched to me in my early 20s. Sure, I knew the basic premise of it all, but I wasn't brought up in it - I was brought up with "folky" type beliefs, with foundations rooted in everything from Native American to Germanic to Scot/Irish Paganism. But an older christian lady I that worked with at the time started pitching the christian gospel to my 'poor heathen soul' 🤣 and finally got me to go to church with her...long story less long...I fell for the lies hook, line, and sinker - 21yrs later as I was writing youth bible studies & researching my subject matter for those lessons - I began to open my eyes to the twisted truths & blatant lies. Seeing it for what it actually was, I walked away without ever looking back. I floundered for the longest time. Now, it feels as if something deep in me has re-awakened and I'm being flooded with it all. It's exhilarating, as well as overwhelming sometimes - and I feel like I have lost so much precious, precious time - I want to be now where I should have been all these wasted years! But alas...it will take the time that it takes & I am enjoying the journey!
So happy to hear that I can walk with all of you, as you will be continuing on - what each of you shared (and continue to bring to us as individuals) was so unique to each of you - it's difficult to find the words to properly express the gain & gratitude! Ruby, would you please share the sources that show the Quakers involvement in the Witch trials. The fact you mentioned this religious group by name set me back a bit. As a Quaker who can trace my direct lineage through Quakers back to colonial times I want to know more. We are very nonviolent which is why during the Vietnam draft young men would say they were Quaker and would be assigned to Civilian Consevation Corp. We were instrumental and vital parts of the underground railroad helping to save the lives of countless slaves and thier families. Thank you and blessed be. Dana an eclectic witch and Quaker from the USA.

    • @coffeewithcrones
      @coffeewithcrones  7 місяців тому +1

Hi Dana, because of the hats they wore at the time, they were thought of as witches, I saw it on the history channel, there is a painting called A Quakers meeting, painted by EGBERT IVAN HEEMSKERCK, around 1685 which shows a Quaker meeting and a lady wearing one of the hats. I can't add a link here as YT takes them off but on the history channel website it says "Some trace the witch hat to a style associated with Quaker women. Throughout most of the 17th century, women of all social classes wore tall, black, wool felt hats, which Abby Cox, a dress historian, says was considered normal fashion at the time. These wide-brimmed, black, conical hats peaked in popularity in the mid-1600s, which also happened to be when a new Christian denomination known as the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, was founded in England.
The Quakers’ beliefs were considered radical at the time: especially the idea that women and men were spiritual equals, and that women were permitted to be preachers. Because they were seen as outsiders, and their views and practices were considered a threat to the British monarchy and the Church of England, Quakers faced persecution and imprisonment, while Quaker women in particular were accused of witchcraft.
In her 1901 book, The Quaker: A Study in Costume, historian Amelia Mott Gummere-herself a practicing Quaker-noted that 17th century “preaching women” who faced “witchcraft persecutions” wore pointed hats (with caps underneath), aprons and high-heeled shoes.
At a time when women outside of the monarchy were rarely in the public eye-and therefore, seldom represented in book illustrations and other art-this image of Quaker women, and the clothes they wore, stuck." - When I was talking, I didn't mean it was Quakers fault, so if this comes across I am sorry to have caused upset, because we don't follow notes and talk from our hearts and minds, some things come out wrong. - Ruby

I have only heard positive things attached to the pointy hats and I truly love to see a child show up to my house on Halloween dressed as a witch. I have frequently been asked, in a very quiet voice, "Are you a witch?" by various people throughout my life and it had nothing to do with the way I dressed. They seem hopeful when they ask and I usually just smile and ask them why I give them that impression or else I might say "I am often asked that" with a smile on my face. I think it is an energy more than a look. I was first tested for E.S.P. as a child so I do think there is something in the astral that speaks on an energetic level. I haven't ever been spoken to in a nasty way about it. I think most people secretly want to know a real witch and for some - like the people dressed as witches on Halloween - it is a matter of Halloween being the one day of the year people are free to explore these archetypes.
I love these conversations with you lovely ladies and hope to start my own "Coffee with Crones" group here in Texas. I am also writing a book about my experiences with the occult/paranormal here in Texas. I often think fondly of you ladies now and always send you the warmest energy! 💜🔮💜🌒🌕🌘

Hello beautiful ones, lovely chat as always. My roots are around pendle hill, i was born and brought up not far from it and i am related to the pendle witches on my fathers side, my dad was brought up at tower farm blacko. I had a healing a few years ago and had things removed from my aura as in one of my past lives i was tied to a tree and had a cross placed over my third eye and had a sedative black liquid poured down my throat so that i couldn't use my powers, up to this point i could never bear to wear a scarf or anything aroond my neck but been fine since i was cleared! Hazel and birch are beautiful woods and i am thinking of making myself a small besom at some point, currently making myself a staff from a fallen beech branch. Oh my goodness tights! it is quite a feat sometimes isn't it, i hate them and only wear when absolutely necessary, your green cloak sounds fantastic. I am definitely an earth, green kitchen witch but have a little water too, i am leo too and like a fire but not firey in personality, in chinese astrology i am a water tiger so i have a good balance i feel. There is real alchemy in raku the way different matrial bring different colours etc, have fun using the cauldron, i need to get me a big one for cooking 😊

Greetings from the PNW (wa state) USA. Thank you for your thoughts on stereotypes! I’ve never understood the pointy hats other than a “dunce” hat for children made to sit in corners. Horrible! Your conversation has made me think! I’ve never had much patience with women who play dumb. What a wonderful way to start my day, coffee in hand, and your delightful/insightful company. This was such a great topic. Sagittarius fire sign and Taurus earth moon here. I have no specific style though I do prefer flowy dresses, blouses, and skirts. I'm particularly fond of kaftans these days. I do have a small besom which hangs over my front door. I am a hearth-cottage-kitchen crone for sure and though I'm not fully out of the broom closet, some have wondered or guessed simply by coming into my home for a visit. I have two gorgeous, antique cauldrons that sit in the porch at the entrance into my cottage. I guess that's a possible giveaway, huh? 😁
Anyhow, I've not been fond of the stereotype witch that has been portrayed throughout the years in television and movies/cartoons. I'm glad that in this day and age, there is an awakening taking place.. one that has been opening many minds to what really is and what really isn't. (Did that make sense?) Thank you for being a part of this awakening. Your conversations around the table have become something I truly look forward to happily. I wish you were all my neighbors. Until the next...sending love and blissful blessings your way. 🤗💕

I have read articles which say what Ayesha was saying, that after enduring weeks imprisoned, being accused of witchcraft, often starved & tortured (mainly) women were then paraded through villages already condemned as witches & would more than likely have been hunched over from spending time in cramped damp places, possibly with sickly coloured mottled or blemished skin due to lack of food/light etc & they may have teeth missing from being struck, so they would have looked horrific & evil to on-lookers who would then have believed everything they were being told. This may be where early depictions of 'witches' came from & then they were the evil child eating monsters in fairy-tales........ On a comment Ruby made about Halloween dressing up, I saw a great comment last year which said something along the lines of - 'my culture is not your costume'! interesting as like Ruby said - you wouldn't go around dressed as a stereotype of another culture /religion ? It always shocks me that the Witchcraft Act was only repealed in 1951 & still today, people who were accused & executed for being witches have not yet been pardoned when many people who were (wrongly) convicted or imprisoned for homosexuality have since had their convictions overturned (in relation to one MP's reason for not overturning convictions for witchcraft being - they were found guilty in accordance with the what was the law at the time) 😥

I am a solitary witch too, even though we meet for chatting etc, I practice alone at home or in nature, Cindy and Ayesha meet up for sisters circles etc, maybe I will join them at some point, I have been having a quite time figuring things out and healing myself for the past year so haven't been going to anything. - Ruby x

This was a FABULOUS conversation - thank you!💜 I love learning, exploring and hearing many different perspectives which you ladies deliver beautifully! I would LOVE a talk about rituals to welcome the Summer Solstice.☀ I appreciate that you all have busy lives, and the Summer Solstice is just around the corner, but that would be awesome if you could pull something off. I'm a "dabbler" and I so respect the depth of your dedication to your craft(s). This year, I feel a real pull to make the Solstice a day of ceremony.... oh, and Ayesha's explanation behind the green skin (etc) makes total sense. I had never thought of if from that perspective. It breaks my heart to think of the cruelty that humans can level upon their brothers and sisters... unfathomable to me. The revelations in this conversation really touched me. Thank you! 🥰

American here--another time for us that people dress up & don't know much if anything about the historical context is St Patrick's day. 🙄 Lots of "it's Paddy, not Patty" (anger about "Paddy" being masculine and "Patty" being short for Patricia rather than Gaelic vs English; nevermind that Patrick was English) and lots of pinching people who are wearing orange with no idea why (the religious oppositions seem to be more fervant in Irish communities outside of Ireland IMO)
Came to mind immediately when Ruby said she couldn't think of another time of year people dress up & dont know why--always a day/time of year that exasperates me as an Irish American 😅

The green skin was also used in the Wizard of Oz purely because it was one of the first movies in technicolour. It’s the same with the ruby slippers. On the book the aren’t red, but they wanted to show of the technology of colour.

Yep! They needed it all to look good on film! I do understand artistic license and the need for things to be eye catching.
It was brought up that perhaps many of the physical characteristics of what Hollywood & others contribute to witches might have come from the visual signs of the horrendous abuse of the women (and men) who were accused & imprisoned back during the burning times. Being beaten black & blue (bruises turn green & yellow as they go through the healing process - and new bruises atop of old ones will cause swelling & deepening with each new trauma), having their faces punched repeatedly will break noses (leaving them crooked if not properly reset), hip bones broken, knocked out teeth, broken arms/feet/hands/jaw bones/etc, would all change a body. Being kept in unimaginable conditions & being malnourished for an extended period of time - by the time the public saw these people again (if they didn't die before hand), I'm sure they were a hideous sight. 💔😔💔

As an example of what we put out there, knowing that our words are powerful, ( this is very likely to be a topic for a chat! 😊) we need to choose what we say and be careful what we wish for!

Yaa you're back! I would say a stereotypical witch would be a woman. The imagery of the pointy nose and the chin come from Jewish hate too not just the hat. That's an interesting question. The only reason why witches are stereotypically depicted as green is do to The Wizard of Oz, the people behind the camera thought that green would look good on there technicolor cameras. The strip tights definitely come from The Wizard of Oz. I say I'm an eclectic witch because I practice crystal magick, storm magick, sun magick, art magick, water magick etc.

The whole Hollywood "witch" thing is so tired. Almost always evil and scary. I thought atleast Harry potter, witches where a bit better, but still a trope.
So thanks to the church and hollywood making the witch a constant villian and over the top hocus pocusery, people that walk this path are treated like we are evil or that we are crazy and don't live in the real world.
And I do take a small amount of offence when someone dresses as a "witch" for Holloween, I don't think people would like it if someone dressed upped as a priest with a baby doll as a prop.
