Back around 1995ish I had an old 69 Ford LTD. 429 2 door. Cool old beater. Living in the San Diego, CA area.
Anyhow the trans was used up. So I went down to the scrap yards to find one. I ended up pulling apart 2 different ones in the yard. Picked and chose the good parts I wanted. Even got a big R servo from a Lincoln. Reassembled it in the yard and went home. Resealed it and ran it for bout 4 years. Good times....
Worked at Valley Trans in El Cajon California then.

that is from behind a 390, 427, 428FE engine.. that explains the bell housing.. some use a 3 bolt starter mount with 5/16 threads instead of 3/8 threads.. there are significant differences in the manual level external shapes between body styles. that one looks like its for a floor shift.. for those who have never seen one.. this is a 429SCJ C6 converter from a 70 Torino Cobra .. i.imgur.com/gkERCdl.jpg look carefully at the welded straps that hold the studs. way stronger than just welded studs. here is the transmission side.. i.imgur.com/Fk6EUDk.jpg just thought i would share.. hi gary..

C4's and C6's are both simple easy transmissions to work on.
For the C6, the front pump is always a little bit difficult to get in and out due to the o-ring around the outside. Also, the reverse servo springs can be a pain to keep aligned while installing them. There is a whole selection of servo piston apply and release sizes as well as a selection of apply levers. Mixing and matching these correctly will greatly improve shift quality. I still have 3 small block (289, 302, 351W/C) case C6's in the garage, but preferred C4's when I was racing.

    • @capriracer351
      @capriracer351 5 років тому

Also, at 31:45. There were 2 different types of seals. There is a lip type and a flat type. If you use the wrong seal, you will also get a bad delay or the transmission won't move. That was a real problem years ago when people rebuilt their C6's and did not know what they were doing. It has been too long ago, but if I remember correctly, the earlier C6's had the lip type of seal, but the later ones maybe '70 and later did not. Also, people would install the lip type upside down, obviously causing problems.

Yes, I got the snap ring out. the snap ring that holds the inside part of the ring gear to the outside part was also broken, I found half of it laying on the back side of the piston where the circular cross section spacer ring goes, and another portion of snap ring still in the groove on the ring gear@@GaryFerraro

thanks for the lovely educational videos Mr Ferraro ,
been your subscriber for a while now , and I must say your videos I found most detailed in educating the public .
on a Note though regarding the Japanese RL4R01A ( known as Jatco automatic ) I own in my 1999 Nissan Frontier L 4 with KA 24 D engine , I found the following from Nissan over Japan themselves the following : they no longer make those type of gate driven , they no longer make parts for them either , and you can only order generic or upgrades .
I also found important information from them as follows : for every 70 to 100 thousand miles ? you must reset the PNP switch control cable tube ( located under the Passenger side ) where it's cable mount bracket is , I was informed of the following steps :
remove the nut and seating hinge from PNP arm
use either #12 wrench or adjustable wrench to open the adjusting tube ( counter clock wise ) till the seal cover is aligned ( it looks like a rubber corrugated form ) and in time ? it twist on it self and that is caused by your shift level from steering column as you use it countless times .
then tighten clock wise ( almost 5/8 inch or until you see the corrugated rubber seal is returned to its uniform shape ) , tighten back the seating and the nut and make sure the shift is locking in P , and clicks on all positions , and you good to go .
you remember when we had a chat regarding my truck transmission in your RE4R01A video ! i Presume , and she was doing great after I rebuilt it , and last week it started no shifting to 2nd gear , so after extensive research and lucky me I called Nissan in Japan ? I discovered this issue , and saved me tons of Money , cost me nothing but half hour to reset it and she is now driving again like a champ .
I just wanted to share this with you and the public interest here as a gesture of thank you for all your priceless times in helping us all .
    [ edit ] p.s : she have now over 360 k mile on her . and still going like a charm .

Hi thanks for video I wanted to ask are you familiar with the C6 that has a short 7" tail housing and a square flange yoke with a big nut holding it in ? I have a 69 F250 C6 390 I bought a gear vendor for it although it has the 14" tail adapter , the only options I have is to change the output shaft to the longer 14" shaft . Although I was told that the trans needs to be removed from the truck to do this since there's a c Clip that holds it in . Not sure if this is correct since I have a big nut holding my output shaft on already I was told I have a bearing behind the flanged yoke and the nut holding it together keeps it in. Wanted to know if I can push in the 14" output shaft with out taking out trans since I have the shorter tail housing with the bolt o yoke ....only other option is to buy there shorty gear vendor kit it comes with a out put shaft and they say it will just slide in no need to remove trans to install the the splines of the out put shaft goes into the gear vendor are you familiar with the short tail sqaure flange yoke C6 ?

This video actually ended up giving me the confidence to dig into the transmission myself and I figured out that the shifter I had been messing with, was not the actual shifter. The Ford C6 is one of the strongest Automatic transmissions made. This same 3 speed automatic transmission was used in the bigfoot monster truck for a while. Its easy to rebuild and modify from which I heard and there is a book on how to modify these.
Also the Ford C6 is linked to the GM-TH400 and the Chrysler TF-727 in strength and performance.
