First scientifically described as Caesalpinia echinata by Lamark in 1785, pau-brasil, as it is commonly known (Lewis, 1998; Bueno et al., 2002), is the tree which gave its name to the country Brasil (spelt Brazil in English). But a lot of people all around the world think they are aware of bossa nova, wheras the only know "BraZilian music", that is to say some pieces of bossa nova understood and played in a US way. Once a friend of mine asked a great brazilian singer and pianist "could you explain why, hearing a good jazz pianist playing bossa-nova, I immediately guess if he is US or brazilian ?" the answer was : "some hear, play and dance samba, some do not". João Gilberto always answered in interviews : "I play nothing but samba", but lots of people believe that bossa-nova is a kind of jazz. The meaning of this ironic song is about that : there is a BraZil for tourists, and there is a Brasil assuming story, including musical heritage (tico-tico no fubá), clichés and myths.
We don't know why, we mean we don't know, but we understand. One thing is one thing, another thing is another thing. Jesus is Jesus, Jenesius is Jenesius. It's like that, back and forth. Mixing, but not mixing. 3:11
