  • Few things can match the excitement of putting your first golf trip to Scotland or Ireland on the calendar.
But before any golfer gets to that point, there’s first a lengthy list of decisions, reservations, and other plans that must be put in place.
It’s easy for first-timers to get bogged down in the sometimes monumental task of putting it all together.
Not to mention the added, and usually self-imposed, pressure of creating that perfect first trip for you and your travel companions.
As a result, many golfers choose to enlist the service of a golf travel company to help relieve the burden. Even with an expert by your side, however, the first golf trip abroad still comes with its own set of unique questions and expectations.
If you’re in the midst of planning your first golf trip across the pond, these ten tips will help keep you in the fairway.

I’m from Australia. I’ve had 2 golf trips to the UK and Ireland 1987 & 2005 and played all the Open courses but 2 on the rota (Muirfield & the Irish course I didn’t play)
My Favourite by far was Royal Birkdale. And I managed 2 games at St. Andrews . Hoylake (Royal Liverpool) was the easiest and Sandwich and Lytham and St. Anne’s the hardest. Of the other courses I played Waterville in Ireland is my favourite course in the world and I’ve played Pebble Beach. And the most awesome course was Royal Dornoch. I wish I’d done 2 more trips.

My best friend and I were in Scotland for two weeks in May. We opted to rent a small RV, and I can tell you driving on the left in a large vehicle was stressful for sure. However, we saved a ton of money and enjoyed a fully flexible itinerary, while still playing some big name courses (Machrihanish, New Course, Glen). Some of the best courses were the “off the beaten track” type spots, like St Michael’s, Comrie, and Dunaverty. If you can afford one of these tours, I’m sure they’re amazing and super easy. But there are also cheaper and more individualized options out there to. Enjoy bonnie Scotland and haste ye back!
