  • VINTAGE TO VICTORIAN FINDS | MARVELOUS MONROE STREET | ANTIQUE MALLS
    Wonderful waterfalls, downtown delights and a few different antique and vintage districts make Spokane, Washington a fantastic destination for collectors and resellers alike! The North Monroe Street section of town has a cluster of antique malls and shops, architectural salvage and interiors shops that create a magnet for vintage lovers of all kinds.
    We pause for a moment to take in Spokane’s Expo ’74 World’s Fair sights (and sites), including a work by native son and renowned sculptor Harold Balazs (a personal favorite of mine!). The fair’s legacy includes a beautiful island park, sophisticated performance halls and a clean, new environment that revived this Victorian city…and left us a lot of fun mid-century vintage to find today!
    Up the road from the Fair site is the Monroe Street Antique District! Just beyond Tossed and Found (subject of our last video) is Marilyn’s on Monroe is a long-established shop with a fun name and a lot of vintage housewares and decor in a thoroughly packed presentation. We pick up a great buy before we even get in the door!
    After studying their shelves, we find a new (to us) shop down the way called Rejuvenate. Their booths are a well displayed blend of vintage wares, repurposed and home goods. In one we find a signed Curtis Jere copper wall plaque at a price so low, the profit will pay for our whole trip!
    Paint in My Hair? That’s the district’s nicely displayed interiors store called that mixes vintage, farmhouse and contemporary furnishings. This friendly and well displayed store is the type of place some vintage resellers avoid due to their decorator focus, but you can find some reseller gold in such places sometimes…and indeed, we do!
    A few steps down the street is 1889 Salvage Co., which is more specifically focused on antiques and vintage. Right inside the door is an eye-popping modernist wall unit that makes me regret driving the little car instead of the van! A fabulous driftwood shade lamp and a lot more fun stuff makes this a great shopping stop, and we end up closing the place. Sadly, I discover too late a neat looking vintage farm and architectural store…we’ll just have to shop Spokane some more this Fall when the town’s Custer’s Antique Show resumes!
    Here are some more things we discover during this trek to a new vintage shopping area:
    Silver fade, bar glass sets, Harold Balazs sculpture, Underwood typewriter, paper ephemera, bar signs, DeForest cookie jar, Expo ’74 World’s Fair tray, Vito Sari pitcher, yield signs, tiki bar, wrought iron book stand, Grundig radio, field phone, Italian decanter set, s&p’s, Hudson’s Bay plate, Jarts, Viking Epic bird, Hull Puss-in-Boots planter, Jeanette Constellation bowl, SylvaC dog, McCoy Harmony console bowl, Roseville Zephyr Lily jardiniere, Haeger stork vase, ice cream parlor set, Snoopy figure, fab 50’s pink lamp, Israel brass cross, McCoy space capsule decanter, amusement park signs, copper fire extinguisher, chrome end table, Crosley hubcap, etc.

    Hi George! I had one of the early 70's Mustangs. It was a 1972. I traded it for a 1964 Impala. Loved the Kitchen Queen! That ice cream parlour set was nice. I've always liked those. I liked those duck decoys in the basement of "Paint In My Hair". That was a great price in the copper fire extinguisher. Lots of interesting items in those shops. Thanks for the take-along!!!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there, Mark! I was actually surprised how few true antiques I found in the district this time, I think the older stuff has moved to nearby northern Idaho (more conservative/traditional there). I did like the decoys and the extinguisher, of course I enjoy all the vintage too but Spokane grew fast between 1890-1910, so I'm used to seeing more of it there. I loved all the early Mustangs, the 1972 is an overlooked and really nicely designed model in my opinion.

    • @CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
      @CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 3 роки тому

      @@TheAntiqueNomad Yes, I noticed there weren't many true antiques there. It would be interesting to browse there, though. Do you ever come across any of the fish planters - the more realistic ones? Those seem to be getting more difficult to find of late. The duck decoys would go really well with that type of fish planter, in a "lodge-feel" room. The '72 Mustang was...OK. I found it wasn't nearly as well-made as the 1964 Impala, though.

      Another thing you can do to avoid getting clipped is to carry a jewelers loop. Inspect the print from the front by looking at the image....vintage art doesn't have the little dots forming it up like seen on laser printing and looking at the back of it. If it has newer backing (brown craft paper) ...new brads (the little nails holding it together)...be suspicious of it. People go to great extremes including using tea to stain the backs of new prints to look like age.

    The space below the step table? That was for the PHONE BOOK, with the (rotary) telephone kept right above it (often with a LOCK on the dial to keep the kids from playing with the phone and costing you an entire week's wages!). There was NO direct dial for long distance in the old days, nor even satellites to connect your phone call. Only millionaires TRIED to make a long distance phone call, because the SOUND had to travel under the ocean by trans-Atlantic copper cable, and it took MINUTES for the Long Distance Operator to even TRY and connect you to someone across the country, not to mention overseas. And the cost would have been astronomical.
